Chapter 14: The Art of Deception
The study fell into a silence so profound that the ticking of the grandfather clock sounded like an approaching countdown. Sebastian stared at Natalie, his icy blue eyes fixed on her with an intensity that could have withered a lesser person. He was a man who prided himself on being the ultimate puppeteer, yet here was his newly acquired "asset," mapping out a high-stakes psychological war against the most dangerous threat to his empire.
"You want to play the victim," Sebastian said slowly, testing the words as if assessing a volatile chemical compound. "You want to convince a psychopath like Matteo that you are weak enough to be manipulated."
"Matteo expects a broken girl because that's what the Lopez family tried to make me," Natalie replied, taking a step toward the desk and resting her hands on the cold glass. "If I play the doting, fiercely loyal wife, he will see right through it. He knows you bought me. But if I play the resentful captive—if I let the public see cracks in our perfect facade—he won’t be able to resist stepping into the light to offer me a blade."
Sebastian walked back to his desk, picking up the crumpled note from Matteo and turning it over in his hand. His lethal aura hadn't faded, but it had morphed into a cold, calculating focus.
"It’s a dangerous game, Natalie," he murmured, his voice dropping into a low baritone. "Matteo doesn't just play to win. He plays to destroy. If he realizes you're a double agent, he won't hesitate to eliminate you."
"Then we make sure he never realizes it," Natalie countered, her gaze unwavering. "And besides, isn't this what you wanted? You told me you wanted to see how ruthless the woman you married could be. Let me show you."
A dark, sharp smile slowly tugged at the corners of Sebastian's lips. It wasn't the fake, polished smile he gave the media, nor was it the indifferent smirk he used to dismiss his corporate rivals. It was a look of genuine, dangerous alignment. He recognized the fire in her—because it was the same fire that drove him.
"Very well," Sebastian said, setting the note down. "If we are going to stage a collapse, we start tomorrow. The press is already tracking our every move after the gala. We will give them exactly what they want: a glimpse of trouble in paradise."
"What’s the script?" Natalie asked, leaning in.
"We have a high-profile dinner tomorrow night at *Le Petit Miroir* with the lead auditors of the Lopez acquisition," Sebastian explained, his eyes locking onto hers. "It's a public venue, heavily frequented by paparazzi. Mid-way through the dinner, we will have a highly visible, quiet argument. You will walk out. You will leave the restaurant alone, refuse my driver, and take a public cab back to the estate."
"Simple. Effective," Natalie nodded, her mind already visualizing the scene. "By Thursday morning, the tabloids will be screaming about a massive fallout between the ruthless CEO and his new bride. It will give Matteo the perfect opening."
"But remember one thing, Natalie," Sebastian added, his tone suddenly turning dead serious as he stepped around the desk, stopping mere inches from her. The familiar, commanding scent of his cologne filled the small space between them, sending a sharp jolt of adrenaline through her veins. He reached out, his long fingers gently but firmly grasping her chin, forcing her to look straight into his icy gaze. "Outside these walls, you are a woman on the edge of breaking. But inside this room, you belong to this alliance. If you cross me, or if you play both sides with my brother... I won't just cut your lifeline. I will be the one who ensures you never find one again."
Natalie didn't pull away. She leaned into his touch slightly, her eyes flashing with a defiance that matched his own lethal promise.
"I don't play both sides, Sebastian," she whispered, her breath brushing his lips. "I play the winning side. And right now, that's right here."
Sebastian stared at her for a beat longer, his thumb lightly tracing her jawline before he slowly let his hand drop. The boundaries of their golden cage had completely dissolved, replaced by a dark, intoxicating partnership. They were about to set fire to their own house just to catch a wolf in the smoke, and neither of them had any intention of looking back.
