Fleeing a dark past, Chiyo seeks refuge in a secluded mountain village hidden deep within the cedar forests of feudal Japan. But the peace she craves is shattered when she discovers the village’s grim tradition. To cleanse themselves of sickness, malice, and sin, the locals bind their dark impulses into meticulously crafted wooden dolls and discard them at a sunken, desecrated shrine.

When Chiyo is taken in by the village’s reclusive, obsessed dollmaker, she begins to hear the impossible—the sound of weeping and scratching against the sliding paper doors at night. As a series of gruesome, unnatural deaths begins to mirror the exact mutilations of the discarded dolls.
