The cold was the first thing. Not the biting chill of a Manchester winter, but a sterile, penetrating cold that seeped into her bones, a cold that spoke of steel and concrete and an absence of life. Emily Robbins tried to open her eyes, but her eyelids felt weighted, glued shut by a fatigue that was more profound than any sleep.
