Episode 4 - The Playground

The Playground

The bell rang sharp at 10:15 a.m., slicing through the last minutes of Mathematics like a mercy call.

Desks screeched, laughter burst loose, and students flooded out of the classroom like birds escaping a cage.

Seth lingered. He wasn’t sure why, but Madam Ariella’s last words still rang in his head.

“Seth, concentration is a habit, not a miracle.”

He hadn’t answered her question right — again.

Yet she hadn’t looked disappointed.

Her eyes had softened, curious… almost searching.

That look had followed him all the way out the door.

The air outside was bright and restless. The playground buzzed with noise — sneakers pounding against the sand, squeals of laughter echoing under the sun.

Mira was sitting alone on the swing, sketching in her notebook. Her hair swayed gently as the wind played with it.

Seth walked toward her slowly, clutching his book like a shield.

“Hey,” he said, his voice barely above the hum of the playground.

Mira looked up and smiled, that small, knowing smile that always made Seth’s heartbeat quicken.

“Hey yourself,” she said. “You looked miles away in class.”

Seth chuckled. “Madam Ariella’s questions… they sound more like riddles than math problems.”

Mira tilted her head. “Maybe they are.” She went back to shading something on her page. “Maybe she’s not just testing what we know.”

He frowned. “What do you mean?”

“She studies people,” Mira said quietly. “Not just what they say — but how they think before they do. I’ve seen the way she looks at you.”

Seth blinked. “You’ve been watching her… watch me?”

Mira’s lips curved. “Maybe.”

Their laughter blended with the soft creak of the swings. For a moment, it was just them — no teachers, no pressure, no eyes burning through the glass. Seth felt… safe.

Then the air shifted.

The noise of the playground dimmed, as if someone had turned the world’s volume down. Seth followed an unexplainable pull and glanced toward the staffroom.

Madam Ariella was there — framed by the window — her gaze locked on him.

Her expression was unreadable. Her lips moved, whispering something he couldn’t hear.

Mira followed his eyes. “See what I mean?” she murmured, a chill running through her voice.

Seth’s throat felt dry. “Yeah… I see it now.”

The whistle blew — sharp, urgent.

Break was over.

As they walked back toward class, Seth hesitated and turned once more.

Madam Ariella was no longer alone.

Beside her stood a tall man in a grey suit — someone Seth had never seen before. His face was calm, too calm. His eyes met Seth’s, sharp and knowing, as if he’d been waiting for this moment.

And just before the bell’s echo faded, the man’s lips moved.

“Found.”

Seth’s heart thudded once — hard — before everything around him blurred back into motion.
