chapter 1

it was morning. the sun rose high above the horizon and sent it's rays through melissa's bed-room curtain faintly into her room. Melissa opened her eyes. the brightness of which seemed to dazzle the sun itself into blindness. it was time for the lap dogs to stir there bodies and wake up at noon. Melissa, in her half asleep state of mind , rung the call bell three times, then with her slipper struck the floor, and pressed the lever of of her repeating watch to know the hour of the day (to make a ringing sound).

still too sleepy to get out of the bed, melissa pressed her soft pillow under her head and fell asleep again. actually, it was her gaurdian-angel who had prolonged her delicious sleep and made a dream hover round her head since that morning. she saw in her dream an angelic youth so charming that she blushed even in her sleep.

this youth, who was none but the sylph in disguise, bent down close to her ears and spoke in whispers into them. his charming **lips moved attractively and seemed to say the following: 'O, thou most charming of all living creatures! your protection is the responsibility of the thousands of the inhabitants of air. if ever in your childhood you belived in the nursery-tales and the talks of the priests about supernatural creatures'.

if ever you have believed in the tales of fairies walking in the shadow of moon-light, or dropping silver pennies into the shoes of maids who keep their house neat and clean, or dancing in the green fields : or if you ever believed in the priest's tales of angel descending with golden **crowns and the heavenly flowers to the virtuous virgins, then believe me and listen carefully to me. let not your mind be confined to earthly or lowly things. listen to me and know your own importance

"there are som secret truths which the learned and the scholarly, owing to their vanity and pride, can never know. only the innocent virgins and children can know them, though learned person who grow sceptical can never believe in the existence of the these truths. know, then, that there are numerous spirits who keep hovering round you. they are a light weight army, though wholly invisible, which operates in the lower region of the sky closer to the earth.

these spirits, invisible to human eyes are always on their wings. when you are in the theatre they are there over your box, and they are with you even when you go to take a round in the park . imagine what a faithful group of attendants you have in the air. your two servants who work for you, compared to the spirits, are worth nothing. i belong to the same group of the spirits. we were, even as you are, in the moulds of beautiful women.

from the moulds of beautiful women we have been gradually transformed into spirits**.
