Chapter 4

The next day, the smell of toast and omelette wafted from the kitchen. Lexi inhaled the aroma of her breakfast ration on the pan. Chris walked unsteadily from her bedroom clutching his head. He looked at Lexi and frowned.

"Why did I wake up in your room?" he asked. Silly question, Lexi thought.

"You got drunk and came into my room."

With a mischievous smile, Chris walked behind Lexi and wrapped his arms around her waist. "Did something happen?" He glanced at Lexi's face.

"Can you stop this? Nothing happened between us." She answered firmly.

"Why? Don't we look like a couple? Hugging a beautiful woman in the morning, looks like I'll get more luck today."

Lexi tried to get Chris' hands off her waist. She deliberately dropped the spoon so that she could reasoning him to stay away. Chris let her go and laughed.

"Well, well. Are you trying to seduce my brother in the morning?" Janice suddenly approached them. She looked neatly dressed in school uniform.

"Watch your mouth. I'm not seducing my own brother." Lexi held the spoon while holding back her anger. She didn't want to make a scene in the morning which could make their mother punish her again later.

Janice constantly bullied her, berating her as a bitch and unlifial child. She stopped when her father and mother came out of the room and sat down at the dining table. With spoiled act, Janice kissed her father on the cheek and handed him the latest newspaper.

Nothing stops her from bullying Lexi other than the appearance of Yichen. Since childhood, Janice was always greedy and wanted the full attention of her parents. However, because she is the same age as Lexi, she began to grow hatred towards her and trying to get her out of their family.

After breakfast, all family members started their activities. Yichen took Janice and Lexi to school, while Chris rode his motorbike to college.

During the week, Lexi studied hard. Although her mother never let her slack off, she always carried her notebook when she did the chores.

On Sunday, her mother asked Lexi to deliver a cake to a friend's house which was located quite far away. She was glad, finally she could have some alone time. While she walked, she was still reading and memorizing important date and events in history.

"Lexi!! Lexi!! Wait for me!" a teenage girl with long hair and wearing glasses ran after Lexi who was almost entering the bus. She is Lexi's schoolmate named Mei-Xing.

"Hey, why are you here?" Lexi asked. Mei-Xing panted even though she only ran for few meters.

"I just took my sister to a karaoke place to meet her friends. And you?"

"I just delivered a cake to my mom's friend's house."

They took the bus to go home. Their house is in the same direction. Mei-Xing looked cheerful and hummed while hugging her bag.

"What makes you happy?"

As if she was waiting for the question, she immediately grabbed both of Lexi's hands. "I met a handsome guy! He is so cool!" Her eyes sparkled.

Then Mei-Xing told about the guy's appearance. A good-looking foreigner helped her when her cellphone fell. It was as if she just had love at first sight.

"He's tall, handsome, and his fashion style is cool! He also has several friends who followed him like henchmen. I can feel his charisma!"

Lexi sighed. Even though she is a teenager, she has never felt attracted to men. Unlike her friends and Janice who are already dating. She didn't know how to respond to Mei-Xing's story and just listened to her babble.

"You know, it seems he often goes to that karaoke place. What if we go there after exam?" asked Mei-Xing with a pleading look.

"I don't have time to play. My mom would be mad if I go out to have fun."

As her best friend, of course Mei-Xing knew. She looked a little disappointed but an idea to pop into her head.

"No problem! I'll call your mom and tell her that we have to do something to prepare for graduation ceremony!" She said. "I am the student council treasurer! Of course, even Janice wouldn't know the truth."

Lexi considered Mei-Xing's words. She also wants to have fun, especially next week is her birthday. What's wrong with sneaking a few hours and going to karaoke with a friend to unwind after exam?

After all, her father would be at home on the weekends. Her mother wouldn't dare to give her a severe punishment even if she knows the truth. She nodded and Mei-Xing jumped for joy.

And when the awaited time arrives...

Exam week was over, the students immediately rushed out of school. Male students celebrated by playing soccer in the field. Lexi watched them from the corridor window.

In her hands, a stack of exam papers neatly arranged. Her homeroom teacher assigned Lexi to arrange the papers based on the student's initials. She was stunned when she saw her sister's name.

She was sure that Janice's test results would be very good because she was able to answer almost all questions. But, what about her score? Her fingers brushed through the sheets of paper as her eyes searched for her name.

Found it.

It was... empty. None of the answers were written on the exam paper. 

She realized her sister always wanted to see her fail. But this time, she was going to let Lexi not graduate from school. Suddenly, she remembered her father's smiling face every morning before he left for work. If she doesn't pass the exam, then she will be a burden to her adoptive family. And of course it will take longer for her to start living independently.

"Got a problem?" A male student's voice from behind made her jump. She hurriedly tidied up the papers in her hands.

"Chen Li... Mm... Student Council President... " she shook her head.

Student Council President, Chen Li walked over to her. He is known as a young man who doesn't talk much and firm. In addition, his name is always ranked first in every exam. Clearly, his brain is brilliant.

"Tell me. What are you hiding... ?"
