Chapter 3 |The Forest of Sin

Evain and I hung out almost everyday for about 2 weeks. He has even met Alice and we had all become really good friends. Evain was like an escape from reality - a cruel mother and a father and brother that were never there.

It was another one of those days were it was just Vain, as we liked to call him, and I. No rational Alice to keep us from doing stupid things.

Today I decided to drag him into a forest. I had noticed that the little orchard where I first met Vain, also were I regularly met him, didn't just end at where the cute picket fence was - it was bigger. Way bigger.

I grabbed my new best friend by the arm and just led him around. As I was in front of him, I didn't sense his fear, only the light shaking. The deeper we went, the more worried Vain seemed.

At a certain point, Evain just stopped. "Evain, is there something wrong?" I asked, turning slightly to him. "Charles," He never used my full name. No one did. "Do you know where we are?" I shook my head. "This is the Forest of Sin. Most who go in here never come out," said Evain, seriously.

I shook my head. "No way. I've already been here before." It was true. This forest was accessible from the manor and it was one of the few places Mother let Alice and I roam. Maybe she thought we would die there.

Either way, Evain seemed surprised and warned me, "You shouldn't come in here for fun, Charlie." I shrugged it off. "Why do you care?" I asked underneath my breath. Obviously he heard it from the alarmed look on his face and I instantly felt regret. Evain looked so sad and I realized he was my only friend, apart from my sister. It wasn't worth losing him over a petty squabble.

"Vain, I'm so sorry. I didn't mean it like that. Please don't hate me," I said, almost begging. He surprised me by laughing and continued to laugh as we both retreated back into the orchard. We spent the rest of the day with Vain teasing me about my first time insulting him and me repeatedly apologizing.

At some point, I got stuck in a tree and asked no one in particular who I had offended to be treated this way today. Soon, Alice joined us and we had all sorts of fruits from the orchard as a sort of snack.

When it got dark and Alice and I had to leave, I looked at my two closest friends in the entire world and said, "I hope this never ends. Our friendship, I mean. Wish it could last forever." Alice nodded in agreement and Evain just smiled.

Later, us twins went home smiling and held hands the entire way home. This almost never happened because of 'She-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named' but we weren't asked to be born in this family. We just had to make do with what we had.
