A BLACK MASK

A BLACK MASK

Breaking into the garden

"You're finally here laddy?", I heard those words in honey-like voice upon breaking into a garden. Was anyone watching me? I made sure to check it twice before entering.

"You were watching me?", I finally asked hesitatingly.

She smiled and said,

"Would you like some apples?"

"I...I thought no one was here."

"It's alright it's not like i didn't want you to come here, you only struggled so much to cross the wall", she laughed.

I was embarrassed, "You were watching me."

She smiled.

"Are you always here?", I asked.

"Were you planning to break through again?"

"Don't make fun of me I have already made a fool out of myself"

"What are you? A kid of 12 or 13?"

"Fourteen", I said a bit louder to correct her.

She chuckled.

"You know, the doors of this garden are always open for anyone and everyone"

"What if there is a thief?"

"What could a thief possibly get? Fruits?"

"So tell me little boy-"

"I am not a little boy.", I said louder.

"Then who are you? young man?", she chuckled.

"Why should I tell you my name?"

"I never asked though."

"I don't like to be around people.", I told her as if i wanted to share something with a friend.

"Are you scared of them?", she asked genuinely.

"Mm....me me, I am not scared of them, they are."

"Oh come on, How can anyone be scared of a little boy like you?"

"Aren't you terrified?", I asked out of curiosity.

"What should I be terrified of? What harm could a 14 year old possibly do to me?"

"It's not me it's my face."

"What about your face?"

"I know you are purposefully ignoring it. Everyone does that.", I was almost teary.

"Would you help me make jelly?"

"See you are avoiding it."

"Tell me, you wanna talk about your face probably burnt in some fire", she was calm and her voice was soothing.

"It was Acid, IT ATE MY FACE, IT ATE ME UP. They say I am a curse."

"Who?"

"Those two ladies I heard. They say it's a terrible thing. It's a face only a mother could love.

"They were probably talking about something else."

"No....I heard them, only I heard them", I cried out.

"Don't tell me you actually believe them, do you."

"People, they say they forget, you don't need to take everything to heart."

"You know something, you are peculiar.", I told her.

She laughed out loud.

"Me?"

"Yes you say peculiar things which i don't understand, you ask weird questions."

"I don't need to answer them."

"Look there. What are those?", she asked me.

"Weeds", i answered without a doubt.

"Why is it that this plant is called Weeds and removed while the others are planted and taken care of? They are both green, aren't they?"

I took a halt for a moment on being questioned again.

"That's a weed garden.", She answered.

"I don't like it when my mother kisses me.", I exclaimed.

"She always does it on the other side of my face. I don't want her to kiss me. She does that because she has to. I don't want anyone to do that."

"Not even Girls, pretty girls, big eyes, long hairs.", she remarked.

"Who would do that?"

"Have you heard the story of beauty and beast? ", she asked.

"I have heard it countless times, it's not like it's happening to me, i won't turn into a charming prince overnight. Imagine the beast remained as it was, would it still be a happy ending?", I questioned.

"You haven't got it fully, have you? Beauty loved the beast for who he was. It's not like she was expecting him to turn into some handsome prince.", she replied.

"Do you always sit here like this?"

"Yes i enjoy the beauty of nature. I love the bright light and darkness."

"And this empty house is yours?", I asked keenly.

"Who said it was empty, it's filled with books. Books about everything and anything. I don't use curtains, i don't like to shut things up."

"I like rain.", i exclaimed.

"So you are not completely lost, huh?"

"I heard my parents talking on a rainy day, they thought i was sleeping but i heard. They said how will he live his life like this? Nobody will accept him. It's difficult for us."

"Oh god, boy you have two arms and two legs you are not psychologically unfit, you will do completely fine. And if you try you can do far better than others.", she assured me.

"There was a man who was frightened of literally everything, What if a car ran over him, what if he trip on a banana peel and become a laughing stock, what if he fell in love with someone and she leave him, what if he caught fire or a tree fell on him, So he licked himself in a room. Safe and sound right?"

"Then?", I was interested to know.

"Then, a picture frame fell in him and he died."

"Hahahaha", i giggled.

"See? It was his destiny."

"But still you say peculiar things.", I said.
