Ashley turned to look at those who were running off, some were screaming. The person who shot Dylan had ran off too. With tears in her eyes, she quickly took out her phone to dial the ambulance. She rested Dylan on her lap as she sat on the ground, caressing his hair.
"Stay with me, okay? Keep talking to me." she brushed his hair back as he bit his lip, holding on to the pain.
"I'm sorry." he whispered before closing his eyes.
Hospital,
The ambulance came soon after, but Dylan had already gone unconscious. He was now in the operating threater.
She sat at the benches opposite of the wards, with her hands in her hair. She let out a sigh, was it so hard to have good things in her life?
Her head shot up when she saw a group of men gathering around the counter.
"Can I know where is Dylan Elrod?" one of them asked the nurse.
Ashley stood up from the bench, walking over to them as she watched them walk towards the operating threater.
"What is your relation with Dylan?" she asked the man, the other looking at her with widened eyes.
"He's our mafia boss. Who are you to him?" he asked her back.
She sighed. How could she not realise it? The car, the mask. The day he came to her cafe, he was so secretive about everything.
"Miss. Ashley?" she turned to the direction of the voice, seeing the doctor in front of her.
"We have taken out the bullet but the patient is still quite weak. He's fallen into a coma and we aren't sure when he'll wake up." the doctor explained.
She just nodded, looking at the floor.
As soon as Dylan was transferred into a ward, she visited him ever since.
It was already the third day and he still hasn't woken up. Sitting on the chair beside his bed, she held her hand in his.
"When will you wake up? You know I'm not mad about you being a mafia or anything." Ashley pursed her lips, not getting a response
"You know, this past three days were so boring at the cafe. There was no one to make me stay back after working hours. There was no one to tease me or buy me cupcakes and no one called me beautiful." Tears rolled off her cheeks while saying it.
"I miss you so much, Dylan. Please wake up." she leaned on his hand.
"I miss you too, beautiful." Ashley shot her head up, hearing the rasp in his voice.
"Dylan?"
He broke into a smile before opening his eyes. She hugged him, her head buried in his shoulder, her tears wetting his shirt.
"You finally woke up." she whispered, feeling his fingers run through her hair.
There was a silence for a while, just the two of them enjoying each other's presence. She were straddling him, closing her eyes with her chin on his shoulder.
"I found out you're a mafia." she whispered slowly but loud enough for him to hear.
He pulled away to look at her. "You did?"
She slowly nodded, playing with the hem of his shirt.
"I'm sorry for not telling you. I was scared of losing you." he tugged her hair behind her ear, bringing her chin up with his finger to make her look at him.
"It's fine, but no more secrets next time please."she said.
"Promise." he pecked her cheek, making her gasp dramatically.
"How dare you!" she tackled him down playfully.
.
It's been two years since the incident. Dylan decided to leave the mafia for good. They both got married a year ago.
FLASHBACK;
Finally closing down the cafe, Ashley wanted to switch off the lights but was stopped by the sound of the bells.
"You have a habit of coming to the cafe after it's closed, don't you?" she blabbered at Dylan who playfully rolled his eyes.
"Yeah, whatever. I have something for you."
She raised her eyebrows, questioning him.
That was until he got down on his knee, pulling out a small red, velvety box.
"I know things were tough and our meeting was unexpected. You made me realise how love is so beautiful and I deserve to be loved.
So, Ashley Lopez, Will you marry me?"
End of flashback.
After putting the kids to sleep, she walked to their shared bedroom. She saw Dylan already in bed, staring at her as if already expecting her to come in.
You laid down beside him, wrapped in his arms.
"I'm so lucky to meet you." she felt a peck on her forhead.
"And I'm so glad I saw your cafe." he smiled, leaning in for another peck.
Ever since that day, both of them were transparent with each other. He was her promise, and she was his.
