Chapter 1
He had been assigned to a new unit called “The North Korean Army”, the one he had only heard of in textbooks and historical films, as their ‘most important’ asset. In reality, his unit was merely tasked to provide cover fire while the other units carried out their mission. The only thing he did agree with the assignment was the name ‘North Korea’. It seemed fitting and it was an odd coincidence that they even chose it, he thought.
His first assignment was to infiltrate a high security hospital where all of the medical staff were being held hostage by Kim Namjoon and his gang. The hospital was heavily guarded and he would be required to infiltrate its main entrance to ensure the safety of the hostages. Songjin was initially assigned to work as a nurse, but his skills in medicine were far from adequate to handle this particular job.
Songjin had worked under a lot of doctors at his previous hospital as he specialized in treating patients with chronic diseases. He was familiar with most of the personnel working there, some of whom even helped him with a few cases. He never expected that he would be placed in such a vulnerable position. While he may not be able to fight well in a real warthere was a part of him that believed he could still contribute something.
A week after arriving in Seoul, he made an attempt to contact one of his former colleagues who had left the hospital. He was met with silence from the other end of the line. He then tried calling the hospital again, but the same result. He decided that he needed to find a way inside to save his fellow officers and help get the hostages back. He didn’t know how long it would take for the enemy forces to come and collect the hostages, so he couldn’t afford to be stuck in a hospital. There had to be an alternative plan if there was no one around to act as his backup plan.
Songjin made several attempts to contact the police and the military but each time, they said that they were unable to respond as they were dealing with another case. He eventually gave up trying and contacted one of the few people that he knew that was still stationed in Seoul. They agreed to meet outside the hospital and discuss his new plan together.
He arrived shortly after two o’clock and found that the other man was already waiting for him. He immediately noticed how tense the other man was and his body language suggested that he wanted to leave right away. Songjin took a few steps forward towards the other man and greeted him, “It’It’s good to see you again. I trust that your trip was safe?”
The other man looked up and nodded his head. “Yes, everything went smoothly. What about you? How are things here? Have you discovered anything interesting yet?”
Songjin shook his head. “I haven’t seen any new developments regarding the prisoners that we were keeping here or any evidence related to the incident we encountered earlier. It seems that we will need more time to figure out exactly what happened before we can proceed further.”
They fell silent for a moment, until the other man broke the silence, “I apologize for my behavior earlier. I’m just worried for the sake of my comrades. We haven’t gotten much news lately and everyone is beginning to feel restless. I guess you might understand now.”
“No problem. Let’s put our differences aside for now, ok? I’ve learned not to judge others based on how they act. I hope that we can still be friends and co-workers in the future.”
“Sounds great. My name is Hyejun, by the way. You can call me Jinwoo though.”
“Nice to meet you, Jinwoo. My name is Songjin. I’I’ll try to keep my distance from you in the future, but I want to let bygones be bygones. Do you think that you could teach me a bit about fighting in the future? I know that it sounds silly considering that the last time that we trained together I was barely standing upright.”
Jinwoo looked down bashfully, “That was embarrassing. But yes, I’d love to teach you how to fight properly.”
After exchanging phone numbers, Jinwoo got ready to leave. Before leaving, however, he turned back to Songjin, “You might want to check your phone soon because we’re running out of time. The North Koreans must be planning something big.”
Songjin quickly looked up and saw that Jinwoo was right. A few minutes later, he received a text message informing him that they were sending a team to arrest his unit and that their next destination was Seoul International Airport.
Chapter 2
Songjin waited in the hallway of the hotel where he was staying. His heart began beating faster as he wondered if the mission had already begun. He was anxious that he might not get to stay in Korea anymore, knowing that he could be captured in less than 24 hours if things did not go to plan.
