Alan was fidgeting the entire time Craigh was driving. She was impatient to see the crime scene. She usually had an affinity for investigations because she hardly ever got emotional. One might think she couldn't feel anything. Quite an unpleasant attribute to have as a woman, her boss always said. But let's get into that part later.
As they seemed to get close to the police blinking lights, she seemed to get more and more excited. This was the time when Alan would be the most vigilant. Still looking out the window, she thought she saw something move atop the at the fourth-floor wall of a building that was close to the eye, but far to go. But something like that should not be humanly possible unless of course, you trained for it your whole life. She took out her phone and zoomed it in the direction she thought to be mysterious and snapped a few pictures with different angles. Her teammates had learned not to ask unnecessary questions at this point since she always seemed to be up to something strange.
As they pulled up to next to the curb, she quickly got out of the car and pulled Sandra along with her. Sandra was the crime scene specialist and knew quite a few things about forensics. Having her usually saved her extra time which she would otherwise have to spend waiting for the Forensics Department to finish.
They walked up to the officer guarding the scene who was on edge, just like an officer on his first murder scene. Alan pulled out her badge and showed it to him as she walked behind the police line.
"Alan! You're here!"It was her boss.
She nodded in acknowledgment. "What's happened?"
"A woman in her 30's found the body. Pretty shaken up. The victim seems to be in his 50's. It's the same as the others. Body's pretty banged up and hung on with a wire. Left a note. Black Diamond."
Sandra said, "What a pain...and we were about to go home too. Let's go check the scene."
They went inside and found the Forensics busy with their work. Alan had her eyes sparkling at this point pulling out her phone and took a few pictures here and there without actually focusing them. They always came in handy.
Alan motioned Sandra to do her thing and herself went to check out the actual scene. She found an extremely grotesque display. The room smelled of blood and the metallic scent seemed to intoxicate her with pleasure for a second there. When she was finally able to refocus, she looked upwards. The victim was hung from the ceiling fan with a black wire. He had stab wounds all over his body with his face being the only thing that seemed squeaky clean. She'd bet anything that the perpetrator actually wiped his face. His foot seemed twisted and in an odd shape. But she didn't care much about that. What she was really interested in was the note. Black Diamond, he or she called it. It was old parchment paper with fancy cursive handwriting and was taped to the floor right below the body with shiny decorative tape. Her perp had aesthetics at least, if not anything else. She bent forward and took a picture with her phone, and then started reading it:
Dear Detective,
I hope you find the presentation that I have provided. Because of the lack of time, there was no way for me to put up my best display yet. I am terribly sorry to the victim and their family for the crime I have committed. You will find financial compensation for the family in the cupboard in the room. I had to do the inevitable because this man was destined to perish for all his misdeeds. You will be getting similar presentations as I have stated in my past letters.
Yours Sincerely,
BLACK DIAMOND.
