Chapter 3~ Second chances

Shyla's POV:

After such a long and tiring day, I came home all depressed. I took a quick shower, had dinner and called my parents as usual.

"How was the interview, sweetie? I'm sure you nailed it! I was waiting for the good news the whole day", said my mom.

I was a little sad to break the news to my mom as the last thing I wanna do is disappoint my parents. But I can't hide the truth forever just because I don't wanna hurt them. They deserve to know what happened.

So, I mustered all my courage and told her everything that happened today. "I must be the unluckiest person on this planet for screwing up such an amazing opportunity", I said to my mom.

"It's okay, my love. Such things happen to the best of us and it's nothing to be disheartened about. Your time must be bad right now but it won't be bad forever, you know! And I'm quite certain tomorrow will bring a lot of wonderful surprises for you, just have some patience and be strong", my mom said. Her words made me tear up a little bit. My time right now might be bad but at least I'm lucky to have such supporting parents by my side.

We talked for an hour almost and I felt a lot better after talking to my parents.

When I checked the time, it was just 9 pm but given how tired I was, I decided it'd be better to sleep early just to get all the shit that happened today out of my mind. I fell asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow and drifted off to dreamland...

Buzz... Buzz...

I was awoken by a vibrating noise and saw that I was getting a call from an unknown number. I immediately checked the time on my phone, it was 7 am. "Who the hell is calling me this early in the morning?" , I thought to myself. I don't pick up calls from unknown numbers so I just ignored it and went back to sleep.

A few minutes later, my phone started vibrating again. It was the same number as earlier. I ignored it again and tried to go back to sleep, when it rang AGAIN. I was pissed off by now and wanted to see who was this desperate to talk to me! So I picked up the call and said "Hello" angrily. A female voice replied saying, "I'm extremely sorry for distributing you this early in the morning but my boss wanted to see you in the office by 11. I usually call a day in advance but I just found out about it as well, because of which I'm a little late...".

I interrupted before she could continue and asked, "Your boss? Who are you and where do you work?"

"Oh, I'm sorry, I should've started the conversation with that! I'm calling from Whitestone Digital", she said.

"Whitestone Digital?? But I came to give the interview and was rejected yesterday, wasn't I?", I asked, still a little bit confused.

"There must've been a mistake, I think you've called the wrong person", said I to which she replied, "I just got a call from my boss saying that he wants to give you another chance as he thinks you'd be a good fit for the job".

Is this for real?! Maybe my time has changed and the bad luck is gone now! My mom was right after all... This is a good day indeed! But given how absolutely terrible yesterday was, I shouldn't get my hopes up just yet.

"Hello?", said the girl on the phone. I was so lost in my thoughts that I almost forgot about her!

"Yes, I'm sorry about the brief pause, I was just thinking... Who exactly did you say your boss was?", I said.

"It's Evan Thorne".

I was shocked after hearing that name! "Evan Thorne, the CEO of Whitestone Digital?!", I enquired.

"Yes", she replied very casually.

Oh my God, oh my God, is this a dream?! The very CEO of my dream company wants to give me a second chance?! You've gotta be kidding me right now!!!

"Hello? Please tell me you'll be there on time", she said while continuing, "I'm gonna be in massive trouble if you don't show up!".

"I'll be there!", I almost yelled at her out of excitement.

"Thank you. See you soon!", said the girl before hanging up the call.

"Yasssss all my good deeds are finally paying off!!!!", I thought as I danced in joy.

I took a quick shower and wore my most favourite shirt (which I only wear during special occasions, but this was nothing short of special! In fact it was more special than all of the aforementioned ones combined!!!). I was going to meet Mr. Evan Thorne in person!!!

The guy has been my idol since FOREVERRRR and I never thought it'd be able to meet him personally. The weird thing though is that although he is my idol, I actually don't know what he looks like irl. His identity is well hidden from the public with not even one photo of him online. I searched all over the internet but to no avail. I honestly don't get why he has to be this private, it's not like he's some sort of mafia... Or is he?! Is it possible that he's in some sort of underground business which is why he has to hide his identity...? I'm about to find out real soon! Not only will I be able to see him face to face and hear his voice, but I'm gonna be close enough to inhale his beautiful scent as well! I always wondered what that guy smells like tbh. Yeah, it might seem weird to a lot of people, but I have some sort of smell fetish or something like that ig...

Anywayyyy, I got dressed and did my makeup which I went for more of a natural look today coz in an article about him, I read that he doesn't like girls who wear too much makeup... Soooo, you know, your girl's trying her best to impress the man of her dreams!

After I was done admiring myself in the mirror for the hundredth time, I finally left for the office at around 8:15 or so (just to be safe I left extra early this time, coz y'all know what happened yesterday and I don't want history to repeat itself!).

Surprisingly enough, I reached office by 9:30 am, that too without any misfortunes this time. Since I left early today, there was not much traffic on the streets either which helped me reach a whole 1 and a half hour early!!! What the heck am I supposed to do now?!

For the first time in my life, I managed to reach early instead of being late as usual but I don't think this is any better either! Having nothing else to do, I thought of exploring my future office (Yes, I'm quite certain I'm gonna get hired this time!).

I entered the lobby and went straight to the elevator. I hopped from one floor to another exploring each and every room in the building. There was no one else in the whole office except for the receptionist as the work hours began at 10.

I reached the 20th floor and went on exploring it when I saw the stupid interviewer from yesterday in the same room as yesterday! "This idiot again! I hope he doesn't create any problems today", I thought to myself.

This job is really important to me. By God's grace I got a second chance and I won't let it slide this time, no matter what! "To avoid him creating any new problems for me, I need to get rid of him somehow, at least till the interview gets over...!", I pondered.

After thinking for a while, I finally got an idea. I went to the receptionist and asked for a key to the 5th room on the 20th floor saying that the guy inside the room was asking for it. Without questioning me further she just reached out for the key in her drawer and handed it over to me. "Be careful with that, he has a really bad temper", she said after giving me the key.

"Sure, thanks!", I said to her before walking away.

I took the elevator to the 20th floor and went close to the door as quietly as possible and peeked inside to make sure he wasn't aware of my presence. Then, very carefully, I reached out to the door knob and locked it using the key. "Ha, serves him right!", I thought to myself as I kept the key in my pocket and walked towards the elevator ever-so-slowly making sure he didn't hear me. I went back to the lobby and returned the keys to the receptionist as if nothing happened. Thankfully, she didn't ask any questions either.

I continued exploring the office after that and waited for the clock to strike 11...
