Cause Of My Euphoria - Volume One
The heavy silence of midnight always brought a strange kind of comfort to Seok Syanja. As she sat in the corner of her dimly lit bedroom, the only illumination came from the stark blue glow of her laptop screen. The rest of the house had fallen asleep hours ago, leaving the world quiet enough for her to finally submerge herself in her own thoughts.
For months, this had been her secret ritual. Pushing through the exhaustion of working odd failed jobs during the day to hunt for something greater at night.
With a trembling hand, she guided the cursor over the screen and clicked send, submitting her latest completed manuscript to a massive international publishing house. She immediately pulled her hand back, crossing her fingers tightly against her chest as a familiar ache of longing flared in her heart.
"Please," she whispered aloud into the empty dark, her voice carrying a husky velvety depth. "Just give me one real chance to prove myself. I just need one open door."
Unable to sit still, she stood up and began pacing the small space of her room. She wrestled with her anxieties, talking herself out of a downward spiral. She couldn't afford to lose hope. Her family was drowning in financial hardships, and the pressure to find stability weighed on her shoulders every single day.
A sharp electric chime shattered the quiet. Syanja froze in her tracks.
She lunged for her phone on the nightstand, her breath catching tight in her throat as she swiped the screen open. An unread message sat in her inbox. The corporate header read: VIM EMPIRE AND COOPERATION.
Her eyes scanned the formal text, widening with every line. They weren't just sending a standard rejection. They were interested. They wanted to hire her as an official novelist. For a long stunned second, the air left her lungs. Then, the realization hit her like a wave, and she threw her hands over her mouth to muffle a scream of pure electric joy as she jumped up and down on the creaking floorboards.
"Yeah! Finally! I actually have an opportunity!"
With hands shaking so violently she could barely hit the keys, she typed out an immediate response, attaching her direct contact information. She had barely set the phone down when it vibrated against the mattress with an incoming call from the corporate office.
She pressed the phone to her ear, trying desperately to steady her erratic breathing. "Hello?"
"Hello, Ms. Seok," a polite incredibly professional woman’s voice greeted her. "I hope I am not calling at an inconvenient hour. My name is Kim Li-No, and I am calling on behalf of VIM EMPIRE AND COOPERATION."
Syanja listened intently, her heart jolting against her chest as Ms. Kim laid out the preliminary details of the contract. It was a massive and life changing offer. Sensing the sheer gravity of the moment and hearing the quiet gasp from Syanja, the representative’s tone softened. "It is a big step, Ms. Seok. We want you to be completely certain, so the company is happy to give you two days to make your final decision."
"Thank you so much," Syanja replied, a wide breathless smile spreading across her face. "I will let you know what I've decided in two days."
The moment the line went dead, Syanja let the phone drop from her fingers and collapsed backward onto the bed. The initial rush of adrenaline slowly began to recede, leaving a cold hard knot of reality in her stomach.
"Now comes the hard part," she muttered to the empty ceiling. "I have to talk to my family. I have to make them agree."
She stared up into the darkness, her jaw tightening with a fierce spark of resolve. They had suffered through so many failed ventures recently, and she knew they were terrified of taking risks. But she couldn't let this slip away.
"This is my dream," she whispered, her voice deepening. "I didn't work this hard just to give up easily. I’ve already wasted too much time doubting myself. This time, I'm not letting anyone take it away from me."
Turning onto her side, she watched the shadows stretch across her room, playing out endless arguments and conversations with her parents until exhaustion finally won, and she drifted into a deep sleep.
The next morning, Syanja woke up groaning as a harsh beam of morning sunlight cut directly across her face through the window curtains. She squinted at the clock on her nightstand nearly 9:00 a.m.
Panic jolted her wide awake. Syanja bolted out of bed, practically flying through her morning routine and throwing herself into a lightning-fast shower. Dressing in a rush, she dashed down the stairs and burst into the kitchen, pulling out a chair at the dining table with so much chaotic energy that her family stopped eating just to frown at her in surprise.
She began eating her breakfast at record speed, barely tasting the food. Her mother watched her from across the table, her brow furrowing with deep maternal concern. She could see the frantic movement of Syanja's eyes, a clear sign that her daughter was entirely preoccupied with a heavy thought.
Setting her own spoon down, her mother walked over and gently took Syanja’s hand in hers. "What's the matter, my child? Is something wrong?"
Syanja stopped chewing, looking up into her mother's warm worried face. She took a deep grounding breath. "Mom... I need to tell you something. I've been writing novels secretly for a long time now. I worked extremely hard to get noticed, and last night, I finally got selected by a major company."
Her mother blinked, completely caught off guard. "Selected? Syanja, I don't understand what you are talking about. What are you thinking of doing?"
Syanja squeezed her mother's hand back, the words pouring out of her in an earnest rush. She explained the contract, emphasizing how much this could change their lives. "Mom, we’ve had so much trouble these past few years. You know how hard it's been for us financially. If I take this job, I’ll finally be able to support all of you. Please... you have to accept it."
Her mother looked away toward the window, an intense conflicted expression crossing her face as she weighed the risks of letting her daughter go against the desperate needs of their household. After a long agonizing silence, she sighed softly. "I will speak with your father about this."
Relief washed through Syanja so intensely she felt a bit lightheaded. She stood up and threw her arms around her mother, hugging her tightly. "Thank you, Mom. You really are the best mother in the world, and that's a fact."
Her mother patted her back gently, then turned and walked down the short hallway toward the master bedroom, closing the door behind her to consult her father.
Left alone in the kitchen, Syanja felt the seconds stretch into hours. She paced the tiled floor, her hands turning icy cold as a nervous sweat broke out across her skin. She pressed her palm firmly against her chest, trying to calm the erratic beating of her heart. Please, Dad. Please just see how much this means to me, she prayed silently.
Nearly twenty minutes passed before a loud booming voice shattered the quiet of the house.
"Syanja! Come in here!"
Syanja flinched, her muscles instantly tensing. She forced her leaden legs to move, walking down the hallway toward her parents' room. She stood outside the heavy door for a brief second, swallowing the lump in her throat, before knocking softly.
"Please come in."
She pushed the door open and stepped inside, keeping her eyes glued firmly to the floorboards, a fearful expression pulling at her features.
"Is what I am hearing true?" her father asked. His voice was heavy, stern and carried the undeniable weight of a man worn down by life's hardships.
Syanja couldn't bring herself to look up. She simply gave a tight small nod.
"Hmm? Syanja, look at me. I need your verbal reply."
Syanja lifted her chin, meeting his sharp gaze, though her throat felt completely dry. "Yes, Father. It's true. I want to take this job. I need to do this."
Her father stared at her, his expression entirely unreadable. Syanja glanced sideways, noticing her mother standing by the edge of the bed, offering a tiny encouraging smile. Finally, her father let out a long slow breath, the rigid tension leaving his shoulders. "All right. If you are confident that you can take care of yourself out there on your own, I will let you do it."
The sudden relief was dizzying. A gasp of pure joy escaped her lips as she lunged forward, throwing her arms around his neck. Her father stiffened for a fraction of a second, caught off guard by the sudden display of affection, before softening and gently stroking her back to calm her lingering nerves.
Later that afternoon, Syanja sat on the edge of her mattress, the chaos of the morning finally settling into reality. She picked up her phone, opened her gallery, and pulled up a photograph of Jeong Jung-Hoon.
He was the country’s most successful young billionaire, a brilliant calculating CEO who operated in a completely different world from her own. Yet, staring down at his handsome face, she let out a long wistful sigh.
"I'm finally coming to your city," she whispered to the screen, a bittersweet smile touching her lips. "After so much effort, I actually got my chance. Out of millions of people in Seoul, maybe... just maybe, I’ll actually catch a glimpse of you in person. I just hope I don't run into you completely out of nowhere."
She let out a soft self-deprecating chuckle, shaking her head at her own reflection. "I know it's completely insane to feel this way about someone who doesn't even know I exist. But I can't deny it anymore. Maybe this is what love really is. Because just looking at you... you are the source of my happiness."
