The summer Venice turned sixteen was supposed to be just like every other summer.
Except… that day started with another fight.
Venice had been busy helping her mom with chores when she accidentally bumped into Bunny in the hallway.
For the second time that day.
Bunny stepped back immediately.
“Are you blind?” he snapped. “This is the second time you’ve run into me!”
Venice’s eyes widened.
“Excuse me?”
“Seriously,” Bunny continued, clearly annoyed. “Do you not look where you’re going?”
Venice crossed her arms.
“Oh please. I’m busy doing actual work, unlike someone who just walks around complaining.”
Bunny scoffed.
“Unbelievable.”
They both stormed off in opposite directions.
But Venice wasn’t done yet.
If Bunny thought she was blind…
Then fine.
She would be blind.
A little while later, Bunny’s mother asked Venice to grab her purse from Bunny’s room.
Venice walked upstairs, but this time she had one hand covering her eyes.
She started feeling around the room dramatically.
Bunny looked up from his phone.
“What are you doing?”
“I’m not talking to you,” Venice replied.
“I’m just here to get the purse.”
She continued walking around the room with her hand covering her eyes, bumping lightly into furniture.
Bunny stared at her in confusion.
“Why are you covering your eyes?”
Venice replied calmly,
“Because apparently I’m blind.”
Bunny blinked.
Realization slowly appeared on his face.
“You’re still mad about that?”
Venice grabbed the purse and left without answering.
But she didn’t stop there.
At dinner, she kept pretending to be blind.
Reaching for dishes that were clearly on the other side of the table.
Almost knocking over glasses.
Everyone at the table started noticing.
Her mother frowned.
“Venice, what are you doing?”
“Nothing, Mom,” Venice replied innocently. “Just annoying people.”
Grace immediately leaned toward Pamela and whispered,
“They fought again.”
Pamela nodded knowingly.
“Obviously.”
The whole family simply continued eating.
They were used to Venice and Bunny’s fights.
Later that evening, everyone gathered in the living room to watch a movie.
Bunny was sitting next to the popcorn bowl.
Venice walked over… still covering her eyes.
She started reaching randomly in the air.
Bunny grabbed her wrist.
“Okay, that’s enough.”
Before she could react, he pulled her outside into the yard.
The rest of the family saw it happen but didn’t interfere.
Ryan chuckled.
“Let them deal with it.”
Outside, Bunny crossed his arms.
“What are you doing?”
Venice kept her hand over her eyes.
“You said I was blind.”
“So now I am.”
Bunny sighed.
“I didn’t mean it like that.”
Venice didn’t move.
“I’m annoying too, remember? So I’m just doing my job.”
For a moment, Bunny didn’t say anything.
Then his voice softened.
“Okay… I’m sorry.”
Venice froze slightly.
Bunny stepped closer.
“We were both annoyed earlier,” he said quietly. “I shouldn’t have yelled at you.”
She still didn’t remove her hand.
Bunny looked at her for a moment, then said gently,
“Are you really that angry that you don’t even want to look at me?”
Venice stayed silent.
His voice softened even more.
“Venie…”
Just hearing him say her name like that made her heart skip.
“Please,” he said quietly. “Take your hand down.”
Slowly, he reached out and gently pulled her hand away from her eyes.
For a moment, they just stood there looking at each other.
Then Venice smiled.
And Bunny smiled back.
When they walked back inside together, they were both laughing.
Pamela raised an eyebrow.
“Well, look at that.”
Grace whispered dramatically,
“Breaking news: Venice and Bunny are not fighting.”
Their mom smiled in surprise.
“Finally,” she said. “You two are growing up.”
But that night, when Venice lay in bed hugging her pillow…
She couldn’t stop thinking about one thing.
The way he said her name.
“Venie.”
And the gentle way he held her hand.
For the first time…
Their fight didn’t feel like a fight at all.
To be Continued…
