After a week or more since that day, despite being friends with Martin's brother, Veronica still has him. She was completely exhausted. Despite knowing all of Martin's news and whereabouts, she did not know him. For instance, she sent a message to him through his brother but was too nervous to do so.
Her mother entered her room, saying, "I hope you haven't forgotten that we are invited to a charity event tonight. There are only a few hours left. The hairdresser and the wardrobe coordinator are waiting for you outside, so take a shower for them to do their work."
Veronica was surprised and looked at her mother in disbelief. She had completely forgotten about the charity event. She took a deep breath and said, "Okay, I'm on my way." She didn't know if this would be the opportunity to finally meet her failed attempt. All she could do was hope for and prepare for the upcoming event.
She walked into the party, and all eyes were on her. She looked at the guests one by one, hoping to find what she was looking for. Her smile faded when her gaze fell on a familiar figure, that of her ex-boyfriend, Lorenzo Stewart, who proposed three years ago.
Her heart sank as she froze. She'd tried to forget him, but now he was right in front of her. She didn't want to see him, so she collided with someone's chest and couldn't lift her face to look at him. This is because she was afraid of crying. He placed his hand on her shoulder and said in her ear, "Bending and surrendering do not suit you."
She looked up at him, and he smiled back. He was Martin, and his words and smile convinced her to stay.
He stepped aside with a bow and said, "After you." She moved forward with a slight blush on her cheeks. He gestured for her to go ahead, and they began their journey. He stepped forward for her to enter. She felt warmth and safety in his presence, and his confidence was reassuring. She looked back at him as she walked through the door.
Her mother rushed up to them with a smile on her face. "Hello, Mr. Martin Bowles," she said as she greeted him. Martin returned her smile and asked, "Hello, Mrs. Birsh, how are you?" Veronica remained in the center, perplexed. They appear to be acquainted.
Veronica's mother spoke warmly to Martin, and he seemed equally familiar with her. It was clear they had met before, yet Veronica was unaware of their prior acquaintance. Mrs. Birsh nodded in reply. "I'm doing well. I'm so glad you two finally had a chance to meet." She reached out and patted Veronica's shoulder. Veronica looked between the two of them, feeling more confused than ever.
"Actually, we know each other." Mrs. Birsh smiled. "Martin and I both work together." Veronica's face lit up with delight. "Oh! I had no idea you two knew each other!" Mrs. Birshnodded in agreement. "It's been a pleasure working with you over the last few months. We make an excellent team!" Martin agreed, "Yes, it's been great working together. We have a lot of fun, and we get a lot done too!" Veronica smiled, happy to know that the two of them had formed a strong bond.
Martin and Veronica's mother started talking about work. Veronica had always disliked these subjects, so she went to the restroom without drawing attention to herself. When she emerged from the restroom, she was yanked around her waist. "I love how my hands sway over your waist." It's Lorenzo—the same scent, the same voice. She slid his hand away from her. "I love to see your hands cut off," Veronica said, her face filled with hatred and rage.
Lorenzo erupted in laughter. "You can never forget me, can you?" As he approached, he inquired. Veronica scowled and pushed him away. She stepped back, her eyes welling up with tears. "I thought I'd never see you again," she exclaimed. Herface was flushed. "Well, there I am, Vera." Lorenzo smirked in response. Veronica shook her head and wiped her tears away. "Why did you come back?" she inquired. "I missed you," Lorenzo admitted quietly. Veronica let out a sigh. "I missed you too, Renzo," she said, barely audible. Lorenzo smiled and opened his arms for a hug, and Veronica stepped into them. She nestled her head into his chest, and he held her tightly. They stood there.
Martin, on the other hand, kept his hands in his pockets and observed what was transpiring. He appeared to have taken fire breath or swallowed coal. But why is this so? Is he envious of something he doesn't even own?
