"You have gone crazy!" A loud voice sounded from the other end of the call.
I distanced the phone from my ringing ear and rubbed it gently. "I did not know there is a new way of answering a call." I said sarcastically. "Don't tell me that is the secret why your company is known for the satisfactory customer service?" I faked astonishment.
"Funny," she replied in monotone. "You have been stuck inside of your apartment for so long. Go out and get a little sunlight."
Ten days had passed since I became unemployed and I spent those days lurking in my apartment without going out. Before going home on the day of dismissal, I bought groceries, which unexpectedly lasted for more than a week.
"You need not tell me. I had planned to go out today since I am running out of food," I retorted.
"Is that so? Then while you are at it, bring necessary documents for job application and start looking for a job," she said. "I am busy. I am hanging up now. Bye."
I looked at my phone screen: Crazy Hale Call Ended 1 minute 45 seconds. Hale was my bestfriend. We knew each other since first grade in grade school. We were classmates until highschool.
Every people has their own troubles and battles to fight. Not displaying your true emotions is a kind of defense that can keep you from others' malice. For there are people who are waiting for you in dark to take advantage of you in your most vulnerable state. One must display confidence and courage to show that he/she is not bullyable.
Working for three years in that company, I thought I had the most favorable work environment. My colleagues were warm and pleasant, very likable. Unknown to me, they were a pack of manipulative and scheming wolves. They were all smiles when facing me but behind those facade were envy and enmity. They would praise and befriend you at your success but deliberately pull you down when at your lowest.
Naive and pathetic. These two words could perfectly describe me working in such a despicable environment. All these years, I was confident with my maturity and sensibility but it turned out that I was wrong in every aspect.
It is really true that realizations always come late in life. Usually, it will strike you when you have no ways of redeeming what you have lost.
After staring blankly at the cafe for a moment, I noticed that customers inside were already looking at me. I was lost in my thoughts and people inside the shop and people passing by had sent me weird glances. Maybe it was unusual for a lady to stand motionlessly like a statue in front of a coffee shop under the heat of the sun.
Embarrassed of my behavior, I immediately turned around, wanting to escape such awkwardness. As reflex, I bowed my head to hide my face but because of that, I was unable to see that someone was walking towards me.
Detecting our probable collision, the person jerked to the right to avoid me but his efforts were still insufficient for we still bumped our shoulders. Due to the light impact, my footing became unsteady. I was about to fall when a strong grip grasped my arm, steadying me. I let out a breath of relief.
"All right?" a resounding deep voice sounded. I looked at the person holding my arm, my savior. "Yes. Thank you," I answered, pulling a smile on my face.
The man stared at me. He had an almond shaped eyes that shared the same color with honey. His eyebrows were straight and neat as if the excess hair were plucked. His nose was perfectly formed and pointed. And his thin lips were red and moist - probably soft when touched. His sexy lips parted and a clear cold voice rang in the hot summer day, "I advise you to look at where you are going. Otherwise, you will cause harm to others." He retracted his gaze and let go of my arm. He walked away with a straight face as if nothing happened.
Hearing what he said, I felt a cold water splashed to my fantasies and I was brought back to reality. His looks brought me to a dreamy state but his indifferent words pulled me back to sobriety.
Look at where you are going he said? If I am not the only one paying attention to my way then he could have perfectly evaded me. What a jerk.
When I thought he was a savior, he was but savage.
Clearly, it is a waste of such a beautiful face. Looks can really be deceiving. One can look like an angel but acts like a devil.
I stared at the back of the man who inquired words of concern and spat poisonous words after. He was tall and had a good body built, not too brawny. Although he was wearing a long sleeve shirt, it was obvious that he was muscular underneath. And his grip was strong but it did not hurt. Moreover, it seemed very dependable.
I turned by back to the gradually shrinking figure of the man and continued walking, putting him in the back of mind.
I have a lot of important things to deal with and such trifle can not bother me.
