The thing in the trees did not move.
At least, not at first.
Anette stared into the darkness between the trunks, her body suddenly tense. Beside her, Valerie had gone unusually quiet, while Freda was carefully scanning the surrounding forest.
The mist had thickened.
Too quickly.
One moment it had been drifting lazily through the roots, and the next it was curling around their ankles in pale ribbons.
"What is it?" Valerie asked.
Freda shook her head slowly.
"I don't know."
That answer was somehow worse.
Anette's gaze remained fixed on the shadows.
For a second, she thought she saw a shape.
Tall.
Thin.
Standing between two trees.
Then it vanished.
The forest creaked softly.
A whisper drifted through the air.
This time they heard actual words.
"Turn back..."
Valerie immediately grabbed Freda's arm.
"Nope."
"Valerie—"
"No. Absolutely not."
Freda sighed.
Anette frowned.
The voice sounded distant and strange.
Almost familiar.
As though she should recognize it.
Before she could think about it further, a bright silver light appeared ahead.
All three girls stopped.
A glowing path had formed between the trees.
It hadn't been there before.
The silver light stretched deeper into the forest like a trail.
Valerie stared.
"That seems suspicious."
"Everything here seems suspicious," Freda pointed out.
"Good point."
A few moments later they noticed other students emerging from different directions.
Small groups.
Pairs.
Some alone.
Everyone seemed equally confused.
Then a voice echoed through the forest.
The same woman from the gates.
"You have entered the First Trial."
Students immediately looked around.
"The Wryborne Forest reveals what lies within."
The voice continued.
"Follow the path."
"And if we don't?" someone shouted.
Silence.
Then:
"You will remain here."
Nobody asked another question.
The students slowly began moving again.
This time there was less talking.
The atmosphere had changed.
The forest felt... aware.
Watching.
Judging.
The silver path wound between ancient trees and across narrow bridges made entirely from roots. Strange glowing flowers bloomed along the edges, opening and closing whenever someone passed.
After nearly an hour of walking, they reached a clearing.
Everyone stopped.
At the center stood a massive tree.
Its trunk was wider than an entire house.
Silver runes glowed beneath its bark.
The sight stole Anette's breath.
The tree looked ancient.
Older than the academy.
Older than the kingdom itself.
And carved into its trunk were hundreds of names.
Thousands, perhaps.
Students who had passed before them.
Students who had failed.
Students who had been forgotten.
Freda stepped closer.
"I read about this."
Valerie looked at her.
"Of course you did."
"The Heart Tree."
Freda's eyes remained fixed on it.
"It measures magical potential."
Anette frowned.
"Measures?"
Before Freda could answer, the runes began glowing brighter.
One by one.
Names appeared above the bark.
Floating.
Shimmering.
The forest had begun its judgment.
A nervous murmur spread through the clearing.
Nobody knew what would happen next.
Nobody except the forest.
And as Anette stared at the glowing tree, she felt something stir beneath her skin.
A pulse.
Then another.
The warmth spread through her arm.
The glow threatened to return.
Stronger than ever before.
Anette quickly clenched her fist.
Not here.
Not in front of everyone.
But deep within the Heart Tree, something seemed to awaken in response.
The runes flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then every light on the tree suddenly flared brighter.
The clearing fell silent.
And for the first time since entering the Wryborne Forest—
Anette felt as though something had recognized her.
