Rumors

High school had a way of finding you, even when you wanted to stay invisible. I’d spent years perfecting the art of blending in—walking the same routes, sitting in the same seats, keeping my head down. But somehow, it still caught up with me. The whispers started quietly, barely more than breath against lockers, easy to dismiss as imagination. By the next day, though, my name was being spoken alongside Eric’s with a familiarity that made my stomach drop. It echoed through the hallways, followed by soft laughter and knowing looks. I told myself rumors were just background noise, something everyone endured at some point—but my chest ached every time someone snickered or glanced at me like they knew a secret I hadn’t agreed to share.

I noticed Lisa first. She stood near the lockers, pretending to scroll through her phone, though her attention was fixed elsewhere. Her smile was sharp, a little smug, as she watched Eric laugh with his friends. Then her eyes flicked toward me, lingering just long enough to make my pulse spike. My stomach twisted. She had noticed the same connection everyone else seemed to see, whether it was real or not. In that moment, I felt exposed—like a page from my journal had been torn out and passed around.

At lunch, I sat with Anna and focused on my food, pushing it around my tray more than actually eating. I tried to act casual, like nothing was wrong. “Jane, don’t let it get to you,” Anna said gently, though she was clearly holding back a smile. “High school rumors are nothing. Let people talk.”

I nodded, even managed a small laugh, but it wasn’t nothing. Every time I saw Eric smile across the cafeteria, my chest tightened. I couldn’t stop wondering if he’d heard the whispers too. Did he notice the sideways glances and teasing comments? Did he even care? Or worse—did he think I liked the attention, that I was enjoying being talked about instead of being interested in him?

Later, when he approached our table carrying his lunch, my heart leapt so suddenly it felt like it might give me away. He paused, gave me that faint, calm smile of his, and nodded. No words, no awkward explanation—just a look that said he knew. And somehow, that was enough. The noise of the cafeteria faded, the whispers losing their power in an instant.

We walked to class together afterward, our steps falling into an easy rhythm. At one point, our shoulders brushed, just briefly, but a tiny jolt ran up my arm and settled somewhere deep in my chest. I tried not to stare, not to let my gaze linger too long, but every movement he made seemed to pull me closer. He had that rare kind of presence—the kind that made the world shrink down to just the two of us, even when the hallway was crowded and loud.

By the time I got home, I was exhausted—not from classes or homework or practice, but from the constant awareness of him. I dropped my bag by the door and lay back on my bed, staring at the ceiling as the day replayed itself in my mind. I noticed every detail again: the tilt of his head when he listened, the curve of his smile, the quiet way he paid attention to people instead of talking over them. The more I thought about it, the clearer it became.

My feelings weren’t fleeting. They weren’t a phase I could laugh off or ignore. Somewhere along the way, without me even realizing it, Eric had carved out a place in my heart. And despite the rumors, the stares, and the uncertainty, I knew one thing for sure—I had no intention of pushing him away.

And just for a moment, in the quiet safety of my room, I let myself imagine a future where he might notice me just as much as I noticed him.
