Chapter-3 A shoulder to cry on

Kalliope burst into her room, slamming the door behind her. She threw herself onto her bed, burying her face in the pillow to stifle her sobs. She covered her ears and mouth with her hands, as if to trap the pain and shame inside. Her body shook with tears, her mind replaying Lord Victor's cruel words.

Meanwhile, Mary, the loyal maid, knocked softly on Kalliope's door. "Miss Kalliope, are you well? I heard a commotion and wanted to check on you." But there was no response. Mary's concern deepened as she knocked again, her voice gentle but insistent. Still, there was silence.

Mary's heart went out to the young miss she had cared for since childhood. She remembered Kalliope's bright smile, her infectious laughter, and her curious nature. Over the years, Mary had watched Kalliope grow into a beautiful young woman, but also a troubled one. She had seen the pain in her eyes, the scars of a difficult past.

As the night wore on, Mary refused to leave Kalliope's doorstep. She stood vigil, her ears straining to detect any sound from within. She knew that Kalliope was hurting, and she wanted to be there for her, to offer a comforting presence, a listening ear.

Mary's thoughts drifted back to the countless times she had soothed Kalliope's childhood fears, bandaged her scraped knees, and listened to her dreams. She had been more than a maid; she had been a surrogate mother, a confidante. And now, as Kalliope faced the cruel realities of adulthood, Mary wanted to be there for her, to offer a steady hand and a loving heart.

As the darkness gave way to dawn, Mary finally heard a faint stirring from within the room. She knocked again, her voice soft and reassuring. "Miss Kalliope, I'm here for you. Please, let me in."

Kalliope hesitated, her hand on the doorknob, before slowly opening the door for Mary. The maid's concerned eyes widened as she took in Kalliope's puffy eyes and tear-stained face.

"Oh, child, what happened?" Mary asked, her voice soft with compassion.

Kalliope sniffled, her words tumbling out in a rush. "Lord Victor...he...he offered to take me as his concubine. Can you believe it? He thinks I'm desperate, that I have no other options."

Mary's expression darkened, her eyes flashing with anger. "That scoundrel! How dare he! You're a beautiful, intelligent young woman, with a heart full of kindness. You deserve so much better than a lecherous old man like him."

As Mary cursed Lord Victor under her breath, Kalliope felt a strange sense of happiness wash over her. Seeing Mary angry on her behalf, standing up for her like a fierce protector, made her feel seen and heard. She burst into laughter, the sound unexpected and cathartic.

Mary's eyes widened in surprise, but then she smiled, her face softening. "Ah, child, you're laughing! That's the spirit! We'll get through this together, you and I."

Kalliope nodded, her laughter subsiding into sniffles. "Thank you, Mary. Just knowing you're here for me makes me feel better."

Mary enveloped her in a warm hug. "I'll always be here for you, Kalliope. Now, let's get you cleaned up and ready for the day. We'll face whatever comes next with courage and determination."
