Unbothered
---
Once upon a time in the quiet little town of Maplewood, there lived a man named Larry. Larry was your average, middle-aged man with an extraordinary love for gadgets. If it had buttons, lights, or made a noise, Larry had to have it.
One sunny Saturday, Larry stumbled upon an online ad for the “SmartPet 5000,” an AI-powered pet that promised companionship without the hassle of feeding, walking, or cleaning up after. Intrigued and enticed by the promise of a low-maintenance pet, Larry ordered it immediately.
Two days later, the SmartPet 5000 arrived at his doorstep. It looked like a sleek, futuristic mix between a cat and a dog, with shiny chrome fur and LED eyes that changed color based on its “mood.” Excitedly, Larry unboxed his new friend and activated it. The SmartPet’s eyes lit up, and it made a pleasant chiming sound.
“Hello, Larry! I am your SmartPet 5000. What would you like to do today?” it asked in a cheerful robotic voice.
Larry decided to test its abilities. “SmartPet, fetch my slippers!”
The SmartPet’s eyes turned a determined green, and it scurried off. Moments later, it returned with Larry’s slippers perfectly balanced on its head. Larry laughed with delight. This was going to be fun.
Over the next few days, Larry discovered that the SmartPet could do much more than fetch slippers. It could mimic animal sounds, play fetch with itself, and even recite poetry. However, one feature intrigued Larry the most: the “SmartGuard” mode, which promised to protect the house from intruders.
One evening, while Larry was at his friend Bob’s house for their weekly poker game, he decided to test the SmartGuard mode remotely. He pulled out his phone, opened the SmartPet app, and activated SmartGuard. The SmartPet’s eyes turned a menacing red, and it started patrolling the house.
Meanwhile, back at Larry’s house, a cat named Whiskers, who belonged to Larry’s neighbor Mrs. Jenkins, decided to pay a visit. Whiskers often wandered into Larry’s yard, but tonight he found the back door slightly ajar and ventured inside.
The SmartPet detected the intruder immediately. Its eyes flashed red, and it let out a series of intimidating electronic growls. Whiskers, who had never seen such a creature, puffed up and hissed. The SmartPet advanced, emitting a blaring alarm sound.
Whiskers panicked and dashed through the house, knocking over vases, scattering papers, and generally causing chaos. The SmartPet followed, relentless in its pursuit. The chase led through the living room, up the stairs, into the bedroom, and back down again, leaving a trail of destruction.
Larry, oblivious to the mayhem at home, was winning big at poker. He decided to check the SmartPet app to see if everything was alright. What he saw made his jaw drop: the live feed from his house showed what looked like a war zone. Vases were broken, furniture was overturned, and there was a high-speed chase involving Whiskers and the SmartPet.
He rushed home, leaving his winnings behind. When he arrived, the house was a disaster. The SmartPet was still in pursuit mode, and Whiskers had taken refuge on top of the refrigerator, glaring down at his metallic foe.
“SmartPet, stand down!” Larry commanded. The SmartPet’s eyes returned to their normal color, and it powered down with a cheerful “Deactivating SmartGuard mode!”
Whiskers cautiously climbed down and bolted out the door, determined never to return.
The next day, Larry spent hours cleaning up the mess. Mrs. Jenkins came over, apologizing profusely for Whiskers' adventure. Larry laughed it off, realizing that maybe some gadgets were more trouble than they were worth.
From that day on, Larry used the SmartPet for simpler tasks, like fetching slippers and reciting poetry. As for Whiskers, he stuck to his own yard, steering clear of Larry’s high-tech house. And so, life in Maplewood returned to its usual, peaceful state, with Larry a little wiser about the limits of technology.
