Roberta Dilworth
Everything seems to be normal on the bright, sunny day of May 19, 1962. Every person on Hall Street in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania we’re inside of their houses, except for Henry Dilworth, a 70 year old man that was mowing his lawn. He listened to the same record on his record player so many times over and over again that he had a song stuck in his head. While he mowed, he sang his song.
Henry:(in a singing voice) Let’s rock! Everybody let’s rock! Everybody in the whole cell block... was dancing to the jail house rock!
Henry’s wife, Roberta: (from inside of the house) Honey! I made banana cream pies! Can I take your car to the Fourth of July party so I can drop them off?
Henry: (stops the lawnmower) Yes, I suppose you may do that. Have a good time, Hon.
(Roberta puts four pies in the backseat of the car, two in the front, and drives off. Henry keeps mowing the lawn for about ten minutes, and then puts his lawn mower into the back of the garage. And goes back into his house, sits on his recliner, and turns on the television.)
News Reporter: Breaking News! There has been a shooting at Hank’s Celebration Center. There are 17 people dead, 25 wounded, and 4 abducted. Since the big Fourth of July party was scheduled to start 13 minutes after the shooting. It will be postponed until Thursday. Thank you for listening in on your local news, I’m Marc Howard.
Henry: (says in a scared voice) No.. this can’t be! I must be having some sort of nightmare!
(Henry runs to the telephone and tries to call the celebration center, and gets nothing. He calls again, and the phone is answered.)
Employee: (In a shaky voice) This is Hank’s... how may we.. help you?
Henry: Is my wife okay? Roberta Dilworth. She brought in pies for the party...
Employee: I don’t know where she went. I’m sorry sir.
Henry: (yelling) What do you mean you don’t know?! Find out!
(Employee hangs up)
(Henry slams the phone against the wall, and the cord gets tangled as it falls)
Henry: (crying) No.. no... why god why?!
( Henry takes the phone and puts it back on the wall. He takes a deep breath and closes his eyes)
Henry: (in a shaky, but calm voice.) It’ll be okay, Roberta. I love you. I’ll find you darling.
(Henry takes his helmet off of the hook made for jackets on the wall, and goes to the garage. He finds Roberta’s bike and puts his hands on the handlebars.)
Henry: Roberta, I’ll find you... I promise.
(Henry starts to cry and opens the garage door, he walks the bike outside and puts the helmet on. He closes the garage door and wipes his eyes.)
Henry: I’ll find you, I promise.
(He closes the garage door and rides the bike down the street.)
Henry: (calls out) Roberta? Roberta? (Sighs) Oh, this will never work, just one old man calling out her name, I’ll never find her like that.. but Roberta... I promise... I’ll find you.
