Chapter 4
The morning in Mumbai didn’t feel like morning at all.
It felt like a held breath.
Kasia D’Cruz stood by the balcony of her family home, fingers lightly curled around the cold steel railing. Below, the city moved like it always did—honking cars, vendors calling out, distant temple bells folding into the noise. But inside her chest, everything was strangely still.
Because last night… had not ended like a normal night.
Last night, Killian King had looked at her like she wasn’t part of a deal anymore.
Like she was something he hadn’t planned to feel.
A soft knock broke her thoughts.
Her mother entered quietly, adjusting her muted pink saree, eyes gentle but observant.
“You didn’t sleep,” her mother said softly.
Kasia didn’t answer immediately. Her gaze stayed on the city.
“I did,” she finally replied. “Just not well.”
Her mother walked closer, placing a cup of tea on the small table beside her.
“For a man like him… sleep probably isn’t easy either,” her mother said after a pause.
That made Kasia turn slightly.
“You’re defending him now?”
A faint, knowing smile touched her mother’s lips. “I’m not defending him. I’m observing.”
Silence returned.
But this time, it wasn’t empty.
It was full of questions neither of them wanted to say out loud.
Somewhere across the city
Killian King stood inside a private penthouse that didn’t feel like Mumbai at all.
Glass walls. Cold marble. Expensive silence.
His phone lay on the table. Unread messages from Italy blinked like warnings he refused to acknowledge.
His assistant spoke carefully behind him. “The alliance families are waiting for confirmation. The engagement terms—”
“Not now,” Killian cut in.
The assistant stopped instantly.
Killian’s gaze stayed fixed on the skyline. The city looked softer from above. Less chaotic. Almost peaceful.
But his mind wasn’t.
It kept returning to her face.
Not fear.
Not submission.
Something worse.
Curiosity.
And that unsettled him more than any threat ever had.
Back at the D’Cruz home
Kasia was pulled into preparation before she could think further.
Her aunt insisted on draping a deep muted green saree over her shoulders—silk that felt heavier than usual today. Her long black hair was left loose, soft waves falling over her back like a quiet refusal to be controlled.
“You’re meeting him again today,” her cousin whispered excitedly.
“I’m not meeting him,” Kasia corrected. “It’s… formal.”
Her cousin smirked. “That’s what engagement meetings are.”
Kasia didn’t respond.
Because even she didn’t know what this was anymore.
Marriage contract?
Political alliance?
Or something dangerously close to inevitability?
Evening — The Meeting
The venue was chosen carefully.
Neutral ground.
A restored heritage hotel courtyard, lit with warm golden lamps and climbing vines. Everything looked peaceful on purpose.
Like the world wasn’t built on secrets.
Kasia stepped out of the car first.
The moment her feet touched the stone pathway, she felt it.
Presence.
Not loud.
Not aggressive.
Just there.
Killian King stood near the far end of the courtyard.
Light striped pale shirt. Sleeves rolled slightly. No visible guards. No visible weapons.
But Kasia had learned by now—danger didn’t need display.
It only needed stillness.
Their eyes met.
And for a moment, neither moved.
The distance between them felt smaller than it actually was.
Killian walked toward her first.
Each step measured. Controlled. Like he was choosing not to break something fragile.
“Miss D’Cruz,” he said.
“Kasia,” she corrected automatically.
A pause.
Then, unexpectedly, the faintest shift in his expression—almost amusement, but restrained.
“Killian,” he replied.
The air changed.
Not dramatically.
But enough.
They sat under the courtyard arch where soft wind moved through hanging lanterns.
A server placed tea between them and left quickly, sensing something unspoken.
Kasia folded her hands in her lap. “So this is where we decide our lives.”
Killian looked at her. “You make it sound like a courtroom.”
“It feels like one.”
A faint exhale left him—almost a laugh, but not fully.
“You’re not afraid,” he said after a moment.
Kasia met his gaze steadily. “Should I be?”
That question lingered longer than expected.
Killian leaned back slightly, studying her like a problem he couldn’t solve with logic.
“I don’t know yet,” he admitted.
That honesty surprised her more than any threat could have.
A breeze moved through the courtyard.
Her saree shifted slightly.
Killian’s eyes briefly followed the movement—not inappropriate, not lingering. Just… aware.
Then he spoke again, quieter this time.
“I expected resistance. From you. From your family.”
“We are resisting,” Kasia said calmly. “Just not loudly.”
That made him look at her more closely.
Like he was realizing something he hadn’t accounted for.
Silence settled again.
But this silence felt different from before.
Less like distance.
More like awareness.
As the meeting neared its end, Killian stood first.
“So,” he said, adjusting his cuff slightly, “we proceed as planned.”
Kasia stood as well.
“Do we have a choice?” she asked.
A pause.
Then Killian looked at her—not coldly, not warmly.
Just honestly.
“Everyone thinks they do,” he said. “Until they realize what they’re willing to lose.”
That should have sounded like a warning.
But it didn’t.
It sounded like confession.
When Kasia turned to leave, she felt it again.
That strange pull between them.
Not romance yet.
Not trust.
Something far more dangerous.
Understanding beginning where logic should have ended.
And behind her, Killian watched her walk away—
as if for the first time,
he wasn’t sure who was being trapped in this arrangement.
