After Loss
John Brown was an ordinary student at the prestigious Engineering University of London. His days were filled with the usual routines of classes, assignments, and the occasional social interaction. On what seemed like an ordinary morning, John walked briskly through the university's grand corridors, his mind occupied with thoughts of an upcoming exam. The sun filtered through the tall windows, casting long shadows on the polished floors as students bustled around him.
As John made his way to the top floor for his first class of the day, he was suddenly intercepted by a stern-faced manager. The urgency in the manager's voice sent a chill down John's spine. "John, I need you to come with me," the manager said, his tone leaving no room for questions.
Perplexed, John followed the manager to his office. The atmosphere inside was heavy, the air thick with an inexplicable tension. The manager's face was pale, his eyes shadowed by an emotion John couldn't quite place. As John entered the office, the manager closed the door behind him and motioned for him to sit.
"John," the manager began, his voice trembling with barely contained sorrow, "I received a call this morning from the police department. Your mother, Mrs. Margaret Brown, has been killed."
The words hit John like a physical blow. His mind raced, struggling to comprehend the enormity of what he'd just heard. Mrs. Margaret Brown, his beloved mother, the woman who had raised him single-handedly—gone? The room seemed to spin around him as a flood of emotions crashed over him—shock, fear, confusion.
For a long moment, John stood frozen, unable to speak. Finally, in a voice barely above a whisper, he asked, "May I be excused to return to my class?"
The manager, his eyes filled with sympathy, nodded silently.
As John re-entered the classroom, all eyes turned to him, but he paid no attention to the curious stares of his classmates. He muttered an apology to the professor for being late and took his seat at the back of the room, his mind numb.
That evening, after the university had emptied of students, John returned to the manager's office. His voice was calm but distant as he requested a few days off to attend his mother's funeral in Cardiff, where they had lived together. The manager granted his request immediately, offering his condolences and wishing John strength.
The next day, John set off for Cardiff, the city that had been his home for as long as he could remember. The journey felt surreal, as if he were moving through a dream. Upon arriving, he was greeted by a somber and small gathering of neighbors, people who had known his mother only briefly. The funeral was simple, a stark contrast to the vibrant life his mother had led. As the last of the mourners left, John found himself standing alone before his mother's grave, struggling to make sense of the situation. His heart ached with a grief that felt too vast to contain.
How could his mother, a woman so full of life, so kind and wise, simply cease to exist? Tears streamed down his face as he grappled with the reality of his loss. He was alone in the world now, without family or friends to lean on. Yet, despite the crushing weight of his sorrow, he vowed not to give up. He would fight to find hope, to continue living, as his mother would have wanted.
