Suddenly, Anshikha started taking long, uneven breaths. Her chest tightened painfully, and she felt as if she couldn’t draw a full breath. Panic rose inside her, sharp and suffocating, and for a few terrifying moments, she felt completely unable to breathe.
“Anshikha!” Arush shouted, rushing to her side. He grabbed her gently but firmly, guiding her to sit down, and handed her the inhaler. Her hands were trembling as she held it, and he steadied them with his own.
“Breathe slowly, Ashi. In… out… now,” he urged, his voice steady despite the worry in his eyes. She inhaled the medicine, her chest gradually loosening as the tightness began to fade. The world, which had seemed so chaotic, slowly started to come back into focus.
Her tears, however, refused to stop. She leaned against him, exhausted, still shivering from the sudden fear that had gripped her. Arush wrapped his arms around her, holding her close. One hand rested protectively on her head, the other tightly around her trembling body.
“It’s okay,” he whispered, his voice breaking. “You’re safe now. I’m here.”
For the first time in years, she didn’t push him away. She allowed herself to be fragile in his presence, to let go of the walls she had built around her heart.
Slowly, she pulled back and looked at him. His face was tired, his eyes red from holding back tears, yet they were full of love—pure, unwavering love that had never faded, even when she had pushed him away.
“I remembered,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “Everything.”
Arush froze.
“I remembered what happened during those two years,” she said, her hands clutching his shirt. “The accident… the hospital… the memory I lost… and how you stayed by me every single day while I didn’t even recognize you.”
Her voice broke, and tears rolled down her cheeks.
“You loved me when I didn’t even know who you were,” she continued. “And I… I treated you like a stranger. I hated you… scolded you… cursed you… for no reason at all.”
Arush’s eyes filled with tears, but he smiled faintly. “I never wanted you to remember if it would hurt you again,” he said softly. “I just wanted you to live, Ashi. I just wanted you to be okay.”
That was when Anshikha let herself break completely.
“I’m so sorry,” she whispered, her forehead resting against his chest. “For doubting your love. For forgetting the man who stayed when everyone else left. For not realizing what I had in front of me.”
Arush tightened his arms around her. “You never lost me,” he said gently. “Even when you pushed me away, I was still yours.”
Her lips trembled as she looked at him through tear-filled eyes. “Then let me try again,” she said softly. “Let me love you the way I should have from the beginning.”
He didn’t speak. Instead, he pulled her closer, holding her tightly—not out of fear, but hope. Hope that she would finally see what had been there all along.
The evening sun cast a warm glow through the window, painting the room in shades of gold and orange. It felt like the world itself was giving them permission to begin anew, to heal together.
Anshikha intertwined her fingers with his, resting her head on his shoulder. For the first time in years, the emptiness inside her began to fade. The past would always ache, the memories would sting, but she had found something stronger: love that waited, silently, patiently, unbroken.
And this time, she would never turn away.
