Shin woke up to the dull hum of reality, his eyes fluttering open as the morning sun streamed through his bedroom window. For a moment, he lay there, clutching his pillow, trying to hold on to the dream. But like always, the vivid colors of the dreamworld began to fade, leaving him with nothing but the sharp clarity of his ordinary life.
He sighed, running a hand through his messy hair. “It felt so real…” he whispered to himself, thinking of Hayoung and the ancient tree. The sensation of her laughter, the warmth of her presence—it was all still so fresh in his mind. He had never felt such a connection in the dreamworld before, and now, awake in his room, it felt like something was missing.
Shin grabbed his phone from the nightstand and stared at the blank screen, his mind racing. Did Hayoung even exist in the real world? He had no way of knowing. She could be just another figment of his imagination, another part of the dream. The thought left him feeling unsettled, and he couldn't shake the need to find out.
It was a Saturday, and Shin had no obligations for the day. After a quick breakfast, he threw on some clothes, grabbed his jacket, and headed out the door. The cool autumn air hit him as he walked down the familiar streets of his neighborhood. The world around him was quiet and peaceful, yet it felt so distant compared to the dreamworld he had shared with Hayoung.
As he walked, his thoughts wandered back to her. She had said she fell asleep and found herself in his dreamworld. What if she was real? What if there was a chance they could meet outside of the dream?
Shin shook his head, trying to dispel the hopeful thoughts. “Get a grip,” he muttered to himself. “She’s probably just a dream.”
But no matter how hard he tried to dismiss the idea, his heart refused to let go. There was something about Hayoung, something that felt too real to ignore.
After wandering the streets for hours, Shin found himself at a small park near the edge of town. It was quiet, with only a few people strolling along the paths. He sat on a bench, staring blankly at the trees swaying in the breeze. His mind kept replaying the dream—the bridge, the waterfall, the ancient tree. And Hayoung.
As he sat there, lost in thought, his phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out and glanced at the screen. A message from an unknown number.
*Hi, Shin.*
He froze, his heart skipping a beat. Could it be...? No, it was impossible. He hesitated for a moment before replying.
*Who is this?*
There was a brief pause before the next message appeared.
*It’s Hayoung.*
Shin’s breath caught in his throat. His fingers hovered over the keyboard as his mind raced. Was this some kind of joke? Or was it real?
*Hayoung… from the dream?* he typed, his hands trembling slightly as he pressed send.
*Yes. I’m as surprised as you are,* came the reply.
Shin stared at the message, disbelief flooding him. How could this be happening? He had always assumed the dreamworld was a place of fantasy, a place where nothing from the real world could seep in. But here she was—Hayoung, the woman he had met in his dreams, was texting him.
*How is this possible?* he typed, his heart pounding in his chest.
*I don’t know,* she replied. *But I woke up this morning, and I couldn’t stop thinking about the dream. It felt so real, and then I found your number saved in my phone.*
Shin’s mind whirled. He had never given her his number. He hadn’t even known if she was real until this moment. How could this be happening?
*I don’t remember giving you my number,* he texted back, his curiosity now piqued more than ever.
*Neither do I,* Hayoung responded. *But here we are. Maybe the dreamworld is connected to this one in ways we don’t understand.*
Shin leaned back on the bench, his mind reeling. Could the dreamworld be more than just a product of his imagination? Was it possible that he and Hayoung were connected in some way, even beyond the boundaries of the dream?
*Can we meet?* he typed before he could stop himself.
There was a pause, and for a moment, Shin thought she might not reply. But then his phone buzzed again.
*I’d like that. How about the café near the park?*
Shin glanced around, spotting the small café she was referring to just across the street. His pulse quickened. This was really happening. He stood up, stuffing his phone in his pocket, and made his way to the café, his heart pounding with anticipation and nerves.
As he entered the café, his eyes scanned the room, searching for her. And then, there she was—sitting at a small table near the window, her eyes meeting his as soon as he walked in. Shin’s breath caught in his throat. She looked exactly as she had in the dream—beautiful, warm, and somehow familiar.
With a mixture of disbelief and excitement, Shin walked over to her, and for the first time, they met outside of the dreamworld.
