EPISODE 5

After a long, frustrating day yesterday, I couldn't even manage to fall asleep last night. It was tough, but thinking about my friends made everything a bit more bearable. They're like a blessing from above, always more thoughtful than I could ever be. I had to remind myself not to forget the plans for Friday and Saturday.

As I arrived at school, Phil greeted me before I could even enter the building.

"Hey Ken, how's your sleep?" Phil asked, looking concerned.

"Although it was frustrating, it's fine," I replied, trying to sound more upbeat than I felt.

"Well, that's good to hear," Phil said with a reassuring smile. "Just so you know, we have a surprise quiz later today."

"A surprise quiz?" I questioned, feeling a bit alarmed. "Well, it's not much of a surprise if you're telling me about it now."

Phil chuckled. "Yeah, it's because you were late. Mr. Porch just excused and went to the restroom. He'll be back any minute."

As I replied, "Now? I thought we were having Math lessons. Why is he coming so early?"

Then Phil realized as well, "It seems Mr. Porch and Mr. Richards are swapping schedules. I didn't expect it either."

Then I respond, "Okay, great. Help me out, will you?"

Phil then agreed, "Sure, unless you plan to spend all your time joking around today."

I respond anxiously, "I think we should get going before Mr. Porch arrives."

Phil laughs, "Sure thing. I bet you'll do fine. But first, I'm waiting for someone."

Then I immediately puzzled what he said, "Someone? Who?"

Phil hesitated, "Uh... I think it's none of your business. You'd better get started before Mr. Porch shows up."

Later, I forced to agree, minding his own business, "Uh... Okay... Whoever that is."

I couldn't shake off the feeling that Phil was acting a bit odd. There was something off about the way he was avoiding the topic. I shrugged it off, though.

I needed to focus on studying. My anxiety about the quiz was growing. I didn't want to let my parents down or fail. I had to make sure I was prepared.

As I sat by the window, studying for the surprise quiz, I noticed Phil outside talking to someone. Their voices were hushed, and I couldn't make out what they were saying.

Yuki said enthusiastically, "Hey, what's up, bro? Sorry for taking so long to get back to you. I wasn't sure if you were expecting a surprise or something."

Phil anxiously whispers him quieter and said, "Shhh! Stay hidden. We don't want to get caught cheating. Did you bring it?"

Yuki whispers, "Here. Please don't tell anyone, especially Mr. Porch, that I'm the one who gave you the answers."

Phil said to him without worrying him, "Of course, I promise. I don't want anyone to get in trouble. Besides, you're my best friend."

Then Yuki reminisce with excitement, "Yeah, and remember, it wasn't until we met back in 5th grade that we started this friendship, especially with Bradley. You shouldn't have to forget him."

Phil responded, "Of course, I'll never forget it. But you should really get going. Mr. Porch will be here any minute."

Yuki farewells to Phil, "Okay, see you later, Phil. Thanks."

"Thanks, Yuki."

As Yuki walked away, I couldn't help but feel a twinge of disappointment. I wondered what exactly they were up to. Phil had always been honest and independent, so seeing him involved in something like this was unsettling. I hoped he wasn't planning to cheat. I wanted to believe he was better than that.

After five minutes, Mr. Porch finally arrived. He looked a bit flustered as he addressed the class. "Good morning again, class. Sorry for the wait. I had a bit of trouble with the restroom's doorknob and ended up being stuck there for twenty minutes. Anyway, let's get to it. Please take out a sheet of one-half lengthwise paper and label it from one to twenty. We'll be starting the quiz soon."

I glanced around, feeling a mix of anxiety and confusion. A surprise quiz on the third day of class? It seemed sudden and unnecessary. I almost forgot about the quiz altogether with everything going on lately.

I looked over at Phil, who was grinning widely. His excitement was palpable, and it made me wonder. "Phil, are you okay? What's with all the energy?"

Phil, still smiling, replied, "Hehe, nothing, Ken. I'm just really confident about this quiz. I've been studying, and I think the questions might be easier than we expect."

Phil's upbeat attitude was puzzling. I could see he was brimming with energy, but I was skeptical. Was he just trying to be optimistic, or was there something more to his confidence? As we prepared for the quiz, I hoped the test would go smoothly and that the surprising energy would turn out to be a good omen rather than a distraction.

Please take out a sheet of paper and label it from one to twenty. We'll be starting the quiz soon."

I glanced around, feeling a mix of anxiety and confusion. A surprise quiz on the third day of class seemed sudden and unnecessary. I almost forgot about it with everything going on lately.

I noticed Phil, who was grinning widely and seemed unusually excited. He was also sweating a bit, which struck me as odd. "Phil, are you okay? You're sweating. Did you play basketball or something earlier? You seem kind of... off."

Phil anxiously said, "Wha-It's just... nothing."

As Mr. Porch was saying, he was about to decide his another idea. "On second thought, why don't we do a new sitting arrangement based on your name in alphabetical order? It seems more formal and proper."

I and Phil, both shocked and said, "What?!"

Mr. Porch proceeds, "Yes, it will make it more proper and uniform. Now, let's start with Austin, Arabella Erica J."

(After 5 minutes)

Mr. Porch continued, calling names, "Beaux, Axel Czar P."

(After 15 minutes)

Mr. Porch wrapped up with, "Grovette, Ken with Georgeton, Maugh Felix Y."

Then another 2 minutes, he called again the names, "Herriet, Phil Morgan T., with Hilberttedy, Cassandra Megan C."

As the names were called, I tried to stay focused on the quiz, but Phil's odd behavior and the sudden quiz had me on edge. I hoped everything would settle down soon.

Ugh, I didn't expect this at all! Now I'm struggling with the quiz, especially without Phil's help.

Mr. Porch continued calling names after twenty minutes, "Wrights, Mixellenda, Althea M., Wroughtson, Clyde, Stevenson L. That's all for the roll call."

I sighed deeply. The tension was rising as Mr. Porch announced, "Now let's proceed to the quiz."

Before we could start, Czar spoke up, "Excuse me, sir. I think your time is already up, and we're supposed to move on to our next subject."

Mr. Porch looked surprised. "Wait, we haven't even started the quiz yet."

Mixellenda chimed in, "Uh, that's because it's already nine o'clock."

Mr. Porch seemed taken aback. "Oh, I see. Well, I think we should still start the quiz..."

I thought, "Yes! Now I still have a chance to study." The realization was a relief, but I was anxious about what the quiz would bring.

Mr. Porch continued and said, "Maybe during your vacant time, just remind me if you have any questions. We should start the quiz later on."

The whole class groaned in unison, "Ohhh!!"

Mr. Porch chuckled and added, "Well, I think I should get going. See you later, class!"

I couldn't believe it. "Mr. Porch, you have no mercy! I should've studied last night. Why are you doing this to us?"

Later, as we returned to our original seats, I approached Phil.

Phil greeted me, "What's up, Ken? Aren't you a bit disappointed that the quiz didn't start?"

I sighed, "Huh? Who's genius enough by being disappointed by a quiz that's been delayed? I've been noticing you the whole time. What's on your mind? Aren't you hiding something?"

Phil looked puzzled. "Hiding? N-No! What are you talking about, Ken? Are you losing your mind?"

I was frustrated and said, "Then why are you acting so strange? It feels like you're hiding something."

Phil shrugged off my concerns, "It's just my normal behavior. Besides, I don't usually do anything that would make you disappointed."

I raised an eyebrow, "Well, okay then. Just don't forget about helping me later on with the quiz, okay?"

Phil smiled reassuringly, "Sure, why not? You're my best friend, right?"

"Thanks," I said, feeling a bit more at ease. "But wait, who was that guy you were talking to outside earlier?"

Phil's expression shifted slightly. "Earlier? That was Yuki. He's my old best buddy from fifth grade."

I pressed on, "And what did you guys talk about?"

Phil's demeanor grew a bit guarded. "Oh, nothing important. It's really none of your business." His nervousness was evident.

I wasn't buying it. "You seem pretty nervous. Can you at least tell me what's going on? You've been acting like this ever since I noticed you talking to him."

Phil looked a bit irritated. "Please, Ken, just drop it, okay? It's personal."

I crossed my arms, "Fine! We'll see about that. Remember, I'll keep my eyes on you!"

Phil's expression hardened for a moment, but then he relaxed. "Alright, alright. Just don't make a big deal out of it."

As the day went on, I couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. Phil seemed to be hiding something, and I was determined to figure it out. It was strange that he was so secretive about his conversation with Yuki. My mind raced with thoughts about whether Phil was involved in something he shouldn't be, like cheating on the quiz.

I couldn't help but think about the implications. The idea of Phil, who was always honest and straightforward, getting involved in something shady was troubling. The more I thought about it, the more I felt a need to keep an eye on him. My instincts told me that there was more to this situation than Phil was letting on.

For now, I resolved to focus on getting through the day and the quiz. But I was more determined than ever to get to the bottom of Phil's secret, whatever it might be.

As I was heading to the library to study during recess, someone abruptly bumped into me. Papers scattered everywhere, and I couldn't help but notice how disorganized and suspicious the papers seemed.

"Hey! Watch where you're going!" I said as I scrambled to pick up the fallen papers.

"I'm so sorry!" Yuki exclaimed, clearly in a hurry. "I've got to get to our next lesson quickly."

"It's fine," I replied, "Let me help you gather these."

"Thanks, man," Yuki said, looking relieved.

I was about to say that I was on my way to the library when I noticed something odd about the papers. They were labeled with:

**Name:** Yuki Montenegro

**Grade and Section:** Grade 11 - Emerald

**Subject:** Science Quiz

My heart skipped a beat. Yuki was Phil's friend, and this seemed to match what I had seen earlier. It looked like Yuki was involved with something related to the quiz.

"Wait, are you Yuki?" I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.

"Yep, that's me," Yuki confirmed, giving me a curious look.

"So, you know Phil, right?" I pressed on.

Yuki nodded. "Yeah, Phil and I go way back. What about it?"

"Just making sure," I said, trying to sound casual. "I noticed the papers and thought it was odd. Are you guys working on something for the quiz?"

Yuki seemed a bit taken aback. "Uh, yeah, we're just making sure everything's set for the quiz. You know how it is."

I nodded, but my mind was racing. The fact that Yuki was in such a hurry and the papers were so specific made me suspicious. I wondered if this had anything to do with Phil's nervous behavior earlier.

"Well, good luck with that," I said, trying to mask my curiosity. "I should get going. See you around."

"Yeah, see you," Yuki said, hurrying off with his papers.

As I watched him leave, I felt a growing sense of unease. If there was something going on with Phil and Yuki, I needed to find out what it was before the quiz. I headed to the library, my mind filled with questions and suspicions about what I had just witnessed.

I managed to catch a glimpse of Yuki's papers, and it was clear that there was something suspicious going on. Yuki seemed to be avoiding my questions, and his quick departure only made me more curious. The pieces started falling into place: Phil's strange excitement, Yuki's hurried actions, and the labeled papers all pointed to one thing-Phil was likely planning to cheat on the quiz. This realization was unsettling, but I couldn't ignore it.

Determined to confront Phil, I had to be cautious. I didn't want to reveal that I knew too much or that I had seen Yuki's papers. I headed to the canteen where I finally spotted Phil.

"Hey, Phil!" I called out as I approached him. "How's it going?"

Phil looked up with a grin. "Oh! Ken! Just studying. What about you?"

"Just wanted to talk to you about something," I said, trying to sound casual. "How's everything going with the quiz prep?"

Phil seemed a bit nervous but tried to play it cool. "Oh, you know, just gearing up for it. Why?"

"Actually," I said, taking a deep breath, "I was thinking about having a group study session. You up for it?"

Phil's eyebrows raised in surprise. "A group study? What's that about? We haven't had a group study session before."

"Yeah, I thought it might be helpful," I replied, trying to keep my tone light. "You know, get a few people together and go over the material."

Phil's smile faltered for a moment. "Hmm, that's interesting. But I'm really just focused on studying on my own right now."

I could tell something was off. Phil was acting unusually guarded, and it only reinforced my suspicion that he was involved in something questionable.

"Phil," I said cautiously, "Is there something you're not telling me? I saw Yuki earlier with some quiz papers, and it seemed pretty suspicious."

Phil's face paled slightly, and he shifted uncomfortably. "Yuki? Oh, that's nothing. Just... you know, normal stuff."

"Normal stuff?" I pressed. "Because it didn't seem like normal stuff to me. It looked like you guys were preparing for something specific."

Phil avoided my gaze, his unease growing. "Ken, I really don't know what you're talking about."

"Phil," I said firmly, "If there's something going on, you need to be honest. I don't want to see you get in trouble or ruin your chances over something like this."

Phil sighed, looking conflicted. "Okay, okay. You're right. We were planning to compare some answers for the quiz. But I didn't want to tell anyone because I didn't want to get anyone else involved."

I felt a mix of relief and disappointment. "I knew it. Phil, you have to be careful. Cheating isn't worth it. It's better to study hard and do your best honestly."

Phil nodded, his expression apologetic. "I know, Ken. I'm sorry. I got caught up in the moment and didn't think it through."

"Well," I said, trying to sound encouraging, "let's focus on studying properly. I'm here to help you if you need it."

Phil managed a small smile. "Thanks, Ken. I appreciate it."

Phil looked a bit dejected as he continued, "I wanted to test myself with higher scores because I want Bradley to be proud of me. It's been tough, you know." There was a hint of loneliness in his voice that I hadn't heard before.

"Bradley?" I asked, puzzled. "Why would you do this for Bradley? He's not even here to cheer you on."

Phil shrugged, his gaze dropping. "Bradley's not really interested in talking during school. He's always busy with his studies and work. He's a student in Chicago now. But he's been a big influence on me. He's a professional basketball player and a singer. I just want him to see that I'm doing well here too."

"Really?" I said, surprised. "So, you're hoping he'll recognize your achievements from all the way in Chicago?"

"Yeah," Phil admitted. "He's been pushing me to be better, and he even wants me to transfer to Chicago and continue my studies there with him. It's a big decision, and I'm not sure how to feel about it yet."

I was taken aback. "Transfer? To Chicago? That's a huge move. Are you sure you're ready for that?"

Phil seemed to hesitate before answering. "I'm not sure. It's a big step, and I'm still thinking about it. But I want to make him proud and show him that I can succeed here too."

I could see how much this meant to him, but it was clear that he was under a lot of pressure. "Phil, if you ever need to talk about it or if you need help with anything, just let me know. We can talk about it more after the quiz."

Phil nodded, looking slightly relieved. "Thanks, Ken. I appreciate it. I just need to figure things out and make the best decision for myself."

"Of course," I said. "We'll talk more about it later. For now, let's focus on doing our best on this quiz."

Phil managed a small smile. "Sounds good."

I told Phil, "We can talk later after school. But for now, during the quiz, please just focus on doing your best. Forget about the cheating-it won't help you win. I promise. See you later!"

I left him alone at the table, feeling a mix of frustration and concern. I couldn't believe the situation we were in. I really hoped that Phil wouldn't resort to cheating and that his plans to go to Chicago to reunite with his childhood friend, Bradley, wouldn't cloud his judgment.

With that thought in mind, I decided to focus on studying for the quiz. I needed to prepare as best as I could and hoped that Phil would do the same. The last thing I wanted was for him to compromise his integrity.
