“He loves you.”
“Please, he just likes to see me go mad.”
“That’s how he flirts you blind bat.”
“Well, that’s not how I want to be treated.”
“Tell him that!”
I huff. This is what I get for asking for advice from a Serpent leader. Troy keeps trying to talk to me and I’m ignoring him because of that stunt he pulled with Gasha. It started with him knocking on my window at the dead of night. Then, he started passing on notes to my assistant committee and publicly stalking me. He even told my mother he was looking for me!
“Why would I talk to him? That’s what he wants,” I reason.
“Then how will he know you don’t like him. He probably thinks you’re playing hard to get,” Kota says with a eye roll.
“For three weeks? Troy isn’t that stupid,” I laugh.
“Your first mistake was overestimating his intelligence.”
I ponder for a moment. Troy was never really book smart. Maybe I do need to tell him face to face. End this chase once and for all.
“Okay, I’ll just tell him to meet me at my house later tonight.”
Kota gives me a pointed look.
“You guys sure are going to do a lot of talking,” she says giggling.
“It’s not a discussion. I will tell him to leave me alone and that’s it, he’ll leave.”
“Sure.”
I don’t really get why she doesn’t think I can tell Troy to leave me alone. I’ve always spoken up when I wanted something. Does she think I’ll be too scared to say it? Tuh, I’ll show her.
“Kota, whatever you think I just want you to know I’m fully capable of speaking up.”
She turns and looks at me for a split second before she sashays to me saying,” Of course you are darling.”
She walks past me and wags her finger for me to follow.
“Come, child.”
I trail her all the way into her bedroom. Everything in her room is a dark burgundy. Her windows are covered by heavy velvet drapes. Her bed spread is also velvet. It goes nicely with her cream colored canopy bed frame. She goes over to her dresser, which I guess is her vanity.
“Sit,” she commands.
“Um, I didn’t ask for a make over Kota. Thanks but no thanks.”
“Sit,” she repeats, this time for firmly.
I reluctantly sit in her vanity chair, anxious of what she will do to me. She stands behind me and runs her scaly fingers through my hair. She looks in the mirror to get a full look of my appearance.
“Your skin is young and healthy. A little make up won’t hurt. You’ve been wearing the same 2 hairstyles since you where crowned Omega. We need to give you something new. Maybe a change of clothes won’t hurt, either.”
I internally sigh. Why does she insist on turning me into a caked up face fairy tale princess? They always need a man to save them because they’re too dumb and naive. I don’t want to dress like them.
“Sit still. You’re too squirmy to be 28 years old.”
“I don’t like this. At ALL.”
“I’m almost done anyway.”
“You said that a hour ago.”
“I would have been done sooner if it wasn’t for you moving around like a devilish child.”
“I never wanted to do this in the first place. As a matter of fact, I believe you forced me to do this. What is even the purpose of pointless work of sh—”
“Done!,” Kota says triumphantly.
She spins me around to face her 3 mirrors. I look....different. She put makeup on my face, which covers my freckles. I have dark lipstick on that matches perfectly with my skin. My eyes have little black wings sticking out at the corners with orange coloring on my eyes. Eye shadow I think. My hair is was taken out of its usual half up and down ponytail at the top. It’s curled at the ends and my hair frames my face. Kota put pearls in my ears so highlight my face. I gotta give it to her, I look good. I turn to thank her, but when I swivel around to face her she is laying dresses on her bed.
“Now I’ll leave so you can try on these dresses. See which one we like more. Okay?”
Dear me, it’s not over?!
“Whyyy?!! I don’t even like trying on clothes.”
She whips around to me and gives me a deadly stare as if she’s going to rip me limb by limb. I huff and stand to try on the dresses.
11 dresses later.....
I didn’t pick a dress. All that for nothing! Never will I ever talk to Kota again.
“Hey Nia!”
I turn to see who is calling me. It’s Coy, a member of the Rhinosi Clan. When he sees my face he stops short. I furrow my eyebrows.
“Is there something wrong?” I ask.
He shakes his head no.
“You look different. Where are your freckles?”
“Do I look bad?”
“No, no not at all. You look beautiful. Really really beautiful. It’s just you never wear makeup.”
“Did I look horrendous when I didn’t?” I say as I raise my eyebrow.
“N-no you looked beautiful too. It’s just surprising is all.”
“Oh, okay.”
See? People liked me just fine before. Now I probably look look like a circus monkey from walking in the heat.
“Anyway, I came to tell you that Troy is looking for you. He wants to talk.”
Perfect!
“Tell him to meet me in Tiger territory. Preferably my house.”
Coy’s anticipating face submerges into a heartwarming smile. He nods and runs away. I watch him for a second and come up with the conclusion that he ran all the way back to Rhinosi territory to tell him the good news. Too bad I’ll have to let him down easy tonight.
“Honey, you look amazing!” My mother gushes.
“Thanks, mama. Kota did it for me.”
“Aw, wasn’t that generous of her.”
I scoff and shake my head. Generous, please.
“So, where are you and Troy going tonight.”
“We’re not going anywhere. And how did you know he was coming here tonight?”
“He told me, of course,” she smiles.
“What exactly did he say?”
“He said that he was going to take you out and discuss some things.”
Yeah discuss how much of a burden he is to me. Where did he get the notion that we were going out?
“Nia, I know you’re a grown woman, but please don’t rush it. I know how eager you get,” she says winking.
What the ****? What is there to get eager about? I don’t even like Troy.
“I am fully capable of controlling my emotions, mama.”
“Sure, sweetie.”
What is wrong with everyone today? I’ve been around Troy for so long why wouldn’t I be able to control myself? I turned on my heels and stalked to my bedroom door. It reallly burns me when people think I’m not capable of anything. The thing about it is they think I have trouble keeping cool around Troy. I had a crush on him in like 4th year. That was long ago when I was immature. No one cares about him now. I decide to wipe off my makeup revealing my natural face and instead put on shorts and a tank top. I leave the curls in my hair because they do look pretty, but wrap it up in a ponytail. That’s much better. He’s not going to want to take me out wearing this. I sit down in my rocking chair. I bought it after I brought the baby back from the council meeting. It’s supposed to help them fall asleep faster. She is over in the Fyrèt clan territory for examination, so I decide to clean my room while I wait.....
“Omega Nia, Troy is here to take you out.”
I mischievously smile. I skip downstairs eager to see Troy’s reaction. As I round my stair case and clump downstairs, Troy’s eyes follow me. I step off the last step and he says........
