Damien
She was everywhere.
Or maybe it was just me—seeing her in every hallway, every classroom, every fleeting reflection in the glass windows.
Celeste Evans.
Her name had already become an echo in my mind, an obsession curling itself around my thoughts like a vice.
I knew where she sat in every class. I knew the routes she took between periods. I knew that she always bought a caramel latte from the vending machine before her morning classes.
I knew too much. And yet, it still wasn’t enough.
Not yet.
Today, that would change.
---
I spotted her the moment she walked into the cafeteria, tray in hand, chatting with her two friends, Ava and Naomi. She always sat at the same table, near the windows. It gave her the best view of the courtyard.
She liked the sunlight.
She liked the quiet.
I knew because she was never the loudest in the room. She was the type who listened more than she spoke, the type who got lost in thought when no one was watching.
Except, I was always watching.
I made my move, walking past her just as she reached her table. As I did, I brushed against her shoulder—just enough to startle her but not enough to make it obvious.
She flinched slightly, her tray wobbling in her hands.
"Ah, sorry," I said smoothly, turning to face her. "Didn’t see you there."
It was a lie. I had planned this moment down to the second.
Celeste looked up at me, her brown eyes widening slightly before she quickly shook her head. "Oh, no, it’s fine. Don’t worry about it."
This was the first time she had ever spoken directly to me.
Her voice was softer than I imagined.
Like honey dripping from her lips.
I forced myself to smile, to make it seem casual. "You sure? I wasn’t paying attention."
She gave me a polite nod before stepping around me, walking to her table like nothing had happened.
But it had happened.
I had spoken to her. I had been close enough to smell the soft vanilla scent of her shampoo.
It was progress.
I sat down at my usual spot across the cafeteria, pretending to listen to Theo as I kept my gaze locked on her.
One step at a time.
I wasn’t going to rush this.
She was like a delicate puzzle, and I intended to solve every single piece of her.

I didn’t think much of it at first.
Damien Hale bumping into me in the cafeteria—it was probably nothing.
Right?
But then, why did I feel so on edge?
I tried to shake it off, but something about the way he looked at me lingered in my mind. His eyes—dark, unreadable, like he was studying me.
It wasn’t the kind of attention I was used to.
I took a sip of my drink, trying to focus on the conversation between Ava and Naomi, but I couldn’t stop myself from glancing across the cafeteria.
He was sitting with his usual group, but he wasn’t talking.
He was looking at me.
My fingers tightened around my cup.
Why?

I followed her home that night.
Not closely—just enough to keep her in sight, to watch the way she walked, how she tucked her hands into the sleeves of her sweater when the wind picked up.
She didn’t know.
She never looked back.
She was so trusting. So unaware.
And that was her first mistake.
Because I wasn’t going to stop.
Not now.
Not ever.
