An Uneasy Alliance

The warehouse was eerily quiet. Dust floated in the air, settling on old crates and rusted machinery. Leah stood near the door, arms crossed, watching Marcus as he casually leaned against a wooden table.

She didn’t trust him. She had spent months tracking him, trying to catch him. And now, she was supposed to work with him? The idea was ridiculous.

But he was right about one thing—those men weren’t just after him anymore. They had seen her too. That meant she was a target now.

Leah exhaled, running a hand through her hair. "Let’s say I agree to this… partnership. What’s the plan?"

Marcus grinned. "I was hoping you’d say that."

"Don’t get too excited," she warned. "I still don’t trust you."

He placed a hand over his chest, pretending to be hurt. "Ouch, Detective. That cuts deep."

Leah rolled her eyes. "Start talking, Marcus. Who were those men?"

Marcus’s playful expression faded. "Hired guns. Probably working for the same people whose secrets I stole. They don’t ask questions—they just make problems disappear."

Leah frowned. "And what exactly did you steal?"

Marcus hesitated for a moment before pulling the notebook from his jacket pocket. He flipped it open, revealing pages filled with handwritten notes, addresses, bank transactions, and names.

"See this?" he said, pointing to a list of names. "These are the people running things from the shadows. Politicians, businessmen, crime lords. All connected."

Leah’s stomach twisted as she scanned the pages. If this information was real, it was explosive.

"And this," Marcus continued, flipping to another page, "is a list of offshore accounts. Money laundering, illegal deals—proof of everything they’ve been trying to keep hidden."

Leah looked up at him. "Why steal this? What were you planning to do with it?"

Marcus smirked. "Sell it, of course."

Leah’s jaw clenched. "Unbelievable. So this isn’t about justice for you. It’s just another payday."

"Relax, Detective," he said. "I didn’t get the chance to sell it before they came after me."

Leah shook her head. "So now you want my help because you have nowhere else to go."

Marcus’s smirk faded slightly. "I want your help because you’re the only one who can actually do something with this."

Leah stared at him for a long moment. Was he lying? Was this just another game to him?

Before she could respond, a loud noise echoed outside. Footsteps.

Marcus reacted instantly, grabbing her arm and pulling her behind a stack of crates. Leah was about to protest when she heard voices outside the warehouse.

"They have to be in here," a man said.

Leah’s grip tightened around her gun. Damn it. They found us. She thought.

Marcus leaned in close, whispering, "Looks like we don’t have time for a long debate, Detective."

Leah glanced at the locked door. It wouldn’t hold for long.

"Do you trust me?" Marcus asked.

Leah gave him a sharp look. "Not even a little."

"Good," he said with a grin. "Then this should be interesting."

The door creaked under pressure. The men outside were trying to force their way in. Leah and Marcus didn’t have much time.

"Follow my lead," Marcus whispered.

And just like that, they were on the run again.
