The morning sun bled through the blinds of James Winter’s apartment, casting long shadows across the room. Sleep had evaded him once again. He stood at the window, staring blankly at the rain-slicked streets below. The city was alive, but something beneath its surface was rotting. He could feel it in his bones.
The spiral symbol haunted his every thought. It was more than just a killer’s calling card—it was a message. And whoever was behind it was playing a game James had no choice but to join.
His phone buzzed on the coffee table.
Lisa.
He answered immediately.
“We’ve got another one,” her voice was grim. “West End. Same mark.”
James grabbed his coat and gun. “I’m on my way.”
At 8:34 AM West End, New Haven
A thin crowd had gathered behind the police tape. The air was cold, heavy with the scent of blood and damp earth. The victim, a young man in his early twenties, lay in the alley behind an abandoned bookstore. Like Evelyn, his throat had been slit, and the spiral symbol was carved into his chest this time.
Lisa was already there, arms folded, face hard.
"His name’s Marcus Flynn," she said. "College student. No criminal record. No enemies anyone knows of. Just… another body."
James crouched near the corpse. The edges of the spiral were jagged, rushed.
"He’s getting bolder," James said. "Or desperate."
Lisa nodded. “We need to find the link between the victims.”
James stood and looked around the alley. Graffiti covered the walls, except for one clean, untouched space. Written in red spray paint, as fresh as the morning air, were the words:
“YOU LOOK BUT YOU DON’T SEE.”
“Damn it,” James muttered. “He’s taunting us.”
Lisa snapped a photo. “We’re dealing with someone who’s not just killing… he wants to be seen. Heard.”
James stared at the message, something churning in his chest. "No. He wants me to see. This is personal."
Lisa turned to him, eyes narrowing. "What aren’t you telling me, James?"
James looked away. “The original case… ten years ago. I didn’t just investigate it. I lived it.”
Flashback to Ten Years Ago
Blood. Screams. The sound of his own voice echoing in the empty house.
His sister, Clara, had been the first victim.
He had found her body himself. The same symbol carved into her palm. The same clean cut across the throat. The killer had never been caught. The case went cold.
But it never left him.
Present Day
Lisa stared at him in disbelief. “Why didn’t you ever say anything?”
James’s voice was low. “Because I couldn’t save her. Because it nearly destroyed me.”
The silence between them stretched, tense and fragile.
Lisa placed a hand on his shoulder. “This isn’t just a case anymore. It’s your redemption. And I’m not letting you face it alone.”
Before James could reply, a call came in over the radio.
“Detectives, we have a situation. Someone just broke into Evelyn apartment.”
James and Lisa exchanged a look.
"Let’s move."
When they got to Evelyn apartment it had been ransacked. Papers were scattered, drawers pulled out, and a single laptop sat in the middle of the floor still on, still unlocked.
Lisa quickly scanned the screen. "She was writing something before she died. Look."
An open document glowed on the screen.
“They think they can hide the truth in darkness. But I’ve seen what’s beneath. There’s a name. I know it now…”
The last line was incomplete.
“Where’s the rest?” James asked.
Lisa shook her head. “There’s nothing else.”
James looked around, then spotted something strange. One of the books on Evelyn’s shelf was upside down. He pulled it free, and inside was a folded piece of paper.
Written in Evelyn’s handwriting were the words:
“Look at the lighthouse. Midnight. He will be there.”
James folded the note and placed it in his pocket.
The game had officially begun.
And now, it was leading him straight into the dark heart of New Haven
