Chapter 4: Breaking Barriers

Tanishi stood in front of the full-length mirror, her reflection staring back at her with quiet determination. She had spent the past few days consumed by preparation, her notebooks filled with ideas, sketches, and color palettes for the Nexus Art Championship. The reality of it was settling in now—this wasn’t just a dream anymore. It was happening.

The weight of expectation sat heavily on her shoulders. Her fingers traced the edge of the competition letter still pinned to the corkboard above her desk. Doubt was an unwelcome guest in her mind, whispering that she wasn’t ready, that she wasn’t good enough. But she silenced those thoughts the way she always did—by pushing forward.

Raghav, as usual, was there to keep her grounded. He barged into her room without knocking, a habit she had long since given up trying to break. “Tell me you’ve at least eaten something today,” he said, raising an eyebrow at her.

Tanishi rolled her eyes but smirked. “Define ‘something.’”

He sighed dramatically, tossing a protein bar onto her desk. “Tanishi, I swear, you’re going to pass out one day, and I’ll be the one carrying you out of this place.”

She picked up the bar, unwrapping it absentmindedly. “I’m fine. Just focused.”

“Focused is one thing. Obsessing is another.” He leaned against the desk, scanning the chaotic mess of papers. “So, what’s the strategy?”

Tanishi exhaled, running a hand through her hair. “It’s not just about making something beautiful. It has to tell a story. Something that stays with people even after they walk away.”

Raghav nodded. “That sounds like you.”

She hesitated before speaking again. “But it also has to impress the judges. These are some of the best minds in the industry. People who’ve been creating for years. I have to stand out.”

He folded his arms. “You act like you’re not already a standout.”

She smiled slightly but didn’t argue. There was no point. Raghav had more faith in her than she sometimes had in herself.

The days leading up to the competition passed in a blur of sleepless nights and relentless practice. Tanishi refined her techniques, pushing herself harder than ever before. Each stroke of the brush felt deliberate, each color choice meaningful. She wasn’t just creating for a contest—she was creating for herself.

Finally, the day of the Nexus Art Championship arrived. The grand hall was filled with competitors, each one radiating a quiet confidence that only heightened her nerves. She swallowed hard, gripping the strap of her bag as she stepped inside.

The setup was grand, with rows of easels, sculpting stations, and digital screens for the various categories. The air buzzed with creativity and unspoken rivalry. She found her station, setting down her materials carefully.

A voice interrupted her thoughts. “Nervous?”

Tanishi turned to see a young woman with sleek black hair and an easygoing smile. “A little,” she admitted.

The girl grinned. “Same. I’m Meera. Oil painting. You?”

“Tanishi. Mixed media.”

Meera nodded approvingly. “Nice. I’ve seen some of the past works in your category. The level of detail is insane.”

Tanishi smiled, her nerves easing slightly. “Yeah. It’s intense.”

Before they could continue, a voice boomed over the speakers, calling for the competitors to take their places. The moment had arrived.

As she picked up her brush, the world around her faded away. The whispers of doubt were gone, replaced by the rhythmic dance of colors and strokes. This was her moment. And she wasn’t going to let it slip away.
