RED DRESS

RED DRESS

ACCIDENT.

Alone at home, after the thunderstorm, the two siblings Jake and Joel Cypher were all alone. They had no parents to wait for, or any relatives to depend on. They were completely on their own in this world.

One could say that things weren't doing great for this small family of two, but they were a happy family, being each other's strength and striving hard for each other.

The 23 year-old Jake, has to work at the construction site, to earn a living while studying. While the 26 year-old Joel has to work many odd jobs both as many as an office job just to earn a living and support the brother's education, since she had decided to quit school for her brother.

On the night of their father's death, she was at a party with her friends.

Her phone rang constantly that night, and she had the feeling that the caller might explode out of anger, so she quickly went outside to answer the call.

"Jake, didn't I tell dad and mom that I'm at a party with friends? Why are you calling?" she asked.

"You should come home quickly, dad asks for you." he announced.

Why? Couldn't her parents miss her any longer that she was being asked for? What In the world is going on? The thought was keen in her thoughts that she didn't know when she replied, "alright, tell them I'm on my way." She answered hanging up.

After a few minutes of self thought, she waved at the coming cab, thereby halting it.

"Jackson hills Street please." she said. The driver drove her to the street she lives in.

Upon reaching, she had paid and rushed inside.

Her mother was sitting glued to her seat. While her brother was probably in the father's room.

"Mother." she called. But she was unresponsive. After many attempts, she gave up and went to the father's room. But the sight got her depressed.

Her father's body was pale white like the ghosts in horror movies, his lips slightly agape and the wheelchair she couldn't remember when her father suddenly needed the support of that heart tormenting medical tool. She tried to remain calm and collected like they've always taught her to be. Just a night out, the father was already like a dead man.

... No, she shouldn't say that. Her father might die just with her careless thinking faculty.

"Dad." she started. "Can you hear me?" she asked again.

"Hm mm... is that you, Joel?" the father struggled to make words audible.

"Yes...yes dad it's me. Your daughter Joel." she responded holding his palm feeling the cold wailing up in her chest.

"I can finally go now I've met my children. " He smiled.

"Why should you go? Where are you going?" she started again, trying to act composed.

In front of her, her father smiled like he used to just that it was forced. The man had tried to stay awake despite knowing the fact that he was dying. He tried to see his family for the last time, before finally giving up the ghost. He wanted to make sure that his family was complete. His wife had stayed with him. Though he knew the wife purposely refused to stand up from the place she had hidden herself, because she can't bear the loss of losing her string of life.

But he was content. He was satisfied. Just the wife being absent couldn't restrain the joy in his heart. He would die a happy man.

Take care you mother and your younger brother was the last thing that she heard before she saw that beautiful smile faltering and the palm she held, suddenly became lifeless.

"Dad! Dad!! Dad!!!" she called. Shaking her father up continuously, the strong feeling of resentment towards death was impeccable.

Beside her was her brother who was man enough to cuddle his sister, allowing the elder to cry sorrowfully in his arms. Tapping her back gently and caressing her hair as if to assure her that he was there with her. That he would be a brother and a father to her.

Jake on the other hand, saw his father suddenly shaking and trembling. He has heard the father whisper. Call Joel... Call Joel multiple times.

And now, right in front of him, the man who was like the shield of the family, had left in the unknown land of the underworld, if he had listened correctly to the teachings of his mythical teacher, who had taught them correctly.

He was just nineteen as of that time when the sudden death occurred.

A few days after the father's death, the mother couldn't handle it and left the world with the father. Thereby, leaving the kids to fend for themselves.

Suddenly working at the gym helping the new members guide them on what to and what not to do.

Her phone rang.

"Hello?" she asked.

"Is this Joel Cypher on the line?" the caller asked.

"Yes, who's this?" she queried.

The next line shocked her. She quickly dashed out leaving everyone that saw her dazed and surprised.

Arriving at the hospital, she made way to the receptionist center.

"What ward is Jake Cypher in?" she asked.

"Hold on." the receptionist smiled.

"Jake Cypher... Third floor by the right..room105" she replied.

Joel thanked the lady still showing her her white teeth.

Out again in search of the ward. To her, it was eternity, but to the original time, it was only a few minutes.

Opening the door, she first took sight of the unrecognizable figure lying on the bed. this made her remember the scene she saw during her father's death.

They had told her that he suffered from a stroke. The father's stroke was hereditary. Luckily, the brother doesn't have that kind of fate. But that wasn't the case. The mother died of the depression of losing her other half, the father died of a stroke that he had refused to treat, because the money spent would be bigger than the money used in training the children.

Now, the scene she was seeing was completely different.

A boy using an oxygen pipe to breathe, bandages all over his head. A lot of medical tools she didn't care to notice. As long as it could save him and keep him alive, there is no need.

"What happened to my brother?"

"Hmph!" the doctor sighed. "According to the people that brought him here, he was hit on the head. The machine used to lift the cement malfunctioned thereby making the cement fall right on top of him. He was trying to protect a girl from being hit. I must say, your brother is very strong indeed. With the blood loss, it was almost impossible to stop the bleeding and stabilize him. But he needs urgent surgery, otherwise, I can't determine his safety." the doctor stated.

Joel stood there looking at the unrecognizable figure not minding whether the doctors and nurses had all left..

Fool!! I told you, didn't I? The job is dangerous. Why?! Why are you taking unnecessary risk? she thought aloud.

Completely oblivious, she stared at her brother as if wanting to dig holes into him.

Later that day, she was asked to meet the so so person in charge of payment.

Two million!!! where would she get that kind of money? that was a whole lot.

After collecting the bills, she kissed her brother's bandaged forehead, before setting out on a journey of 'DO NOT REST UNTIL THE MONEY IS OBTAINED.' new kind of rules.
