Liv narrating:
I watched panic take over Ryder's face the moment Max said that, making him snatch the gun from his hands.
"We're not going to shoot, you son of a bitch," he warned.
Max lunged to try and get the gun back.
"You can't be a fucking bitch all the time!" he snarled, turning to me with the gun in his hand.
He added:
"And we can always heal you however we want."
"Please don't shoot!" I screamed, my heart pounding hard in my chest.
"Please!" I begged.
"You have five seconds to get down," Max snarled at me.
"What?!" I exclaimed.
"Five... Four," he counted anyway.
At that moment, I held out my hand.
"Wait, at least I..."
"Three," Max echoed, smiling more sharply, he found my look of despair amusing.
As if my body was on fire, I started climbing down the tree as fast as I could and ran towards them, falling to my knees right in front of Max, who was holding the gun.
He approached me, put his finger under my chin.
"You know what happens now, Liv?"
He came closer, and I was sure I noticed him raising the gun. Suddenly, the pack's alarm bell rang, signaling an emergency. It was only at that moment that Max lowered the gun.
"Let's go, something's wrong!" Ryder pulled Max, already running towards the mansion, and Max followed, putting the gun away.
As I watched them leave, I kept my hands on my chest, trying to calm down. Those were the scariest minutes of my life. I thought that would be my last time, because seeing Max with that gun, the determination in his eyes, was inevitable.
I got up from where I was kneeling and staggered to the mansion. I had bruises on my thighs from climbing down the tree—since I was an omega, I didn't heal as quickly as Alphas or Betas, so I had to deal with the pain.
I entered the mansion again, careful not to run into any of them. I knew that the moment they found me, they would resume what they hadn't managed to finish.
The day was already coming to an end, and I was hoping not to run into them until I was back in my small room, in the comfort of my bed, dreaming of the next day.
As I walked down the hall, I realized I had missed one important thing: I didn't look ahead. I looked everywhere except in the direction that mattered, making sure Max or Ryder didn't try to sneak up. That was their specialty—always full of surprises.
With my eyes scanning the surroundings, I didn't realize there was someone in front of me until it was too late. I bumped my head into a huge figure, my head colliding against a hard chest. I swallowed hard as I felt a familiar scent reaching my nose.
Looking up, my eyes met intense, attentive green ones. The scowl on his face made me shiver. It was Callum. He barely intimidated me, not like his brothers, but I was afraid of him.
"Sorry," I whispered, backing away a little, hoping he would let it go, even though the way he was looking at me showed the opposite.
Without effort, he grabbed my arm, wrapping his hand around it and pulling me closer.
"What the fuck did I say about cases like this, Liv!" he said rudely, looking at me with eyes full of anger.
"Y...you said that whenever I came, I should go in the opposite direction and not let them see my face."
"It's very simple!" he snarled, coming even closer.
At that moment, I doubled over, closed my eyes, and trembled.
"Sorry."
"Sure, you're always fucking sorry!" he snarled.
Apologies were never enough for them. What else did they want from me—my blood? That's what they were all looking for. Maybe if they had it, they would finally stop.
"Come on, Callum, the girl needs a break. You need to leave anyway," I heard a familiar voice, which was the only thing that stopped Callum from continuing to stare at me so intensely.
It was Bella, the Beta's daughter. He looked at her and then turned his gaze back to me. He made a disapproving sound. He certainly wanted to do more to me—make me pay for bumping into him—but he knew he had to leave.
The moment he left the hallway, Lily turned to me, looking me up and down with her brown eyes.
"Did you fall into a trash can?" she laughed. "Let me rephrase the question: were you the one thrown into a trash can this time?"
I looked at myself. Well, I certainly looked a mess. My clothes were dirty, some torn, my ankle purple. I sighed, looking at her, saying nothing.
"For God's sake, you need to stop getting into trouble all the time, Liv," she blurted out.
That sentence made me angry. "Stop getting into trouble all the time"—as if I didn't wake up every day with problems at my door, in front of me.
I looked at her defeated.
"They're obsessed with making my life hell."
"More like obsessed with you," she muttered as she turned to leave.
I let my shoulders drop, dragging my sore body, paying no attention to what she had said. It was just another common day of being their game.
Everything would end tomorrow. I would find my mate, a strong and fearless wolf who would protect me. I walked to the servants' quarters, then to my room. I had finished all my work that day. I knew that if I hadn't finished, Mrs. Yvonne, the head of the maids, would come knocking on my door in the middle of the night, dragging me out and punishing me.
Just thinking about her gave me the shivers. In fact, just thinking about everything made me sick. I really hoped that the next day would be the end of everything.
