The Eighth Room

The Eighth Room

The Eighth Shadow

Leena didn’t expect to feel anything when they moved.

But standing in that dim, unfamiliar hallway, she felt something.

Not fear. Not excitement.

Just… watched.

The building was old.

Tall and quiet.

The walls were yellowed, the floor groaned beneath every step.

Even the light from the windows felt tired, like it had been trying for too long.

Her mom was ahead, unlocking the door to 3B.

Leena followed, carrying a box that felt heavier than it should.

“Home,” her mom said with a small, tired smile. “For now.”

Leena didn’t answer.

The apartment had the smell of old water and forgotten time.

She didn’t bother pretending she liked it.

Her room was small.

A bed. A desk. A chair with one leg uneven.

The wallpaper peeled near the ceiling, and there was dust in the corners.

She dropped her bag and sat down on the edge of the mattress.

It creaked beneath her like it didn’t want to hold her weight.

She stared at nothing. The same way she had for months.

After her dad died, everything broke.

People said sorry. Then they left.

Even her mom started talking less.

Now she lived in silence.

No texts. No friends.

No one waiting for her, no one checking in.

She unpacked nothing.

She didn’t need anything.

She barely needed herself.

The walls didn’t feel like they were holding her in.

They felt like they were waiting for her to break.

That night, the silence was louder.

She lay awake, eyes on the cracked ceiling.

The fan above ticked once every few seconds, like it was struggling to stay alive.

2:53 a.m.

She checked her phone. Nothing.

Not even an ad notification.

It hurt in a quiet, dull way.

Then she heard it.

A soft creak.

Not the fan. Not her mom.

It came from the hallway.

She sat up slowly.

The apartment had gone colder.

She opened her door and stepped into the dark.

The hall stretched ahead, shadows longer than they should’ve been.

The lightbulb flickered, buzzing faintly like it didn’t want to be there either.

And then she saw it.

A line.

Thin, too perfect, too straight to be a crack.

Her eyes adjusted.

It was an outline. A narrow rectangle, carved into the far wall.

She’d been here all day. That hadn’t been there before.

No knob. No hinges. No handle.

Just a door-shaped thing that should not exist.

She walked toward it slowly, like her legs were underwater.

The wall around it looked darker. Like it had been burned.

Like something had tried to come through.. and almost made it.

She reached out.

The wall was warm.

Breathing.

She pulled her hand back.

Goosebumps ran up her arms.

She suddenly felt small. Exposed. Like something was looking right into her.

Not through the door.

But from it.

And then, deep in her chest, a whisper formed:

You weren’t supposed to see this.

Behind her, something shifted.

A second breath that didn’t belong to her.
