Chapter 4

Their relationship wasn’t as bad as the day he first woke up.

The reason he could remain calm despite the absurdness of the situation had been because she was there for him. Yes, it was hard. But her cheerfulness seemed to help somehow. He felt like he could understand how the original Marven had kept sane all along.

“Sure.” Marven responded, half-heartedly.

However, he still felt awkward around her, so was uncomfortable being home. But he couldn’t let such a small child be left alone. Be it or not, he was Marven now, and her older brother. He had come to accept that in the past week. Albeit, being a rough path.

‘Did I forget something…?’

...---...

Freshly out of the bath, Marven made his way to the already set dining table. For an eight-year old, she did it flawlessly. Complimenting her in his head, a sudden realisation hit him.

‘I shouldn’t let her work so much. I’ll have to talk to her about this soon, after all, she should be enjoying her childhood now. But…’

“Good job.” Marven praised the little Melvin, patting her on the head. It seemed just like yesterday when he had tried to pat the little one on the head when she retracted from fear. It seemed she was abused. At first, Marven was furious, thinking the owner of the body had harmed her. But he soon dismissed those thoughts, concluding there was no way Melvin would be this open with him if he had.

“Hehe!” the innocent Melvin beamed with joy, her smile stretching from ear to ear.

Just then, “OH!” Marven stood up, exclaiming. “That’s what it was!”

“Brother?” Melvin looked up at him, clearly curious.

“It’s nothing you need to worry about.” He made sure she wasn’t tensed.

‘I had totally forgotten about that loud guy. I hope he didn’t wait for too long. I mean, we were supposed to come home together but I practically ditched him. Don’t be mad at me! I was in a tough spot too..!’

Deciding to dismiss any thoughts of the guy, he got up and helped Melvin do the dishes.

She wouldn’t let him do the dishes alone, so this was the best compromise they could come to.

...---...

Lying on the bed, Marven was lost deep in thought. His thoughts would go back to what he and Melvin had discussed before retiring to sleep-

“Melvin, when do you plan to attend school from? As you can see, I’m recovering well. So there’s no need for you to worry anymore.” After much deliberation, Marven eventually asked her the question that had been plaguing him. But he was not prepared for the response.

Melvin looked sad. “Brother, I don’t go to school. You were the only one who was able to attend school since you were smart.”

She knew that Marven did not have his memories. Of course, the fact that he was not Marven was kept hidden.

But knowing about her brother’s amnesia still didn’t make it easier for her at times like this. She felt lonely.

Although, her brother probably wouldn’t have known anyway…

But our protagonist didn’t know that.

Melvin, in the other room, felt quite depressed.
