Pawns of Justice

Bernice

“Unsolved mysteries,” Justin muttered while looking outside the window, hiding both hands on his pocket. I seated on the sofa, and placed my laptop on my lap.

“What's about unsolved mysteries?” I asked as I turn on my laptop.

“I can't just stay here not reviewing a case,” he said shifting his gaze to me. He went on his desk.

I sighed. "Justin, we deserve to relax for now."

"Maybe we should decorate our office, since it'll be a long holiday break," I suggested.

Well judging our office. The walls  are painted with gray, just gray there's no other design.

"Why we will do such thing?"

"Isn't dull?"

"We will just waste our time doing that overrated stuff," he said.

I tapped the Word Office icon, and opened a blank document.

Justin is my long time best friend, I grew up with him. His Mom take cared of me, when my Mom died on my delivery.

"You said, we deserve to rest!" He took my laptop away.

"Justin!" I shouted at him.

"Bernice, we need to relax," he said. He genuinely smile at me.

"Stop doing that, your wife may kill me." I went on my spot and seated on my swivel chair.

"May I ask, why are you still single in that age?" He asked.

"Because you're not divorced yet," I answered, as I turn my chair.

"Marrying a not neat woman like you? Gross!" He said. I stopped, and look towards him.

"I'm just kidding, as if I will marry a man who doesn't know how to trust his partner!" Yeah, everything for him is suspicious. He is obsses on observing. Fyi, Justin is a lawyer and here I am, a Prosecutor.

He laugh. "Hey, I'm also kidding! You're beautiful even you look like a beggar!"

I lend my back, "Do you think I will refuse my statement earlier just because of that? Hell no!"

"So what, at least I told you my real perception!"

I stand up. "Let's end this nonsense, I'll just ea-"

"Good morning, I bought takeout-breakfast for us!" Clejo entered our office carrying plastic bags.

"Woah, what a timing. I'm hungry!"

"Get yours," said Clejo. I get mine. Wait, is that a blood stain? My eyes  narrowed. So yeah, it's a blood stain. Maybe that's from his wound. By the way, he smells good. I was piqued 'cause he smells like a strawberry.

Clejo, is the adopted brother of Justin. His Mom wants to have two sons, but apparently Justin is the only child they ever had. So there was Clejo.

"How's Mom?"

"S-she's doing fine," he said. Why his voice is shaking? Is he nervous?

I seated and, placed my meal on my desk.

"We talk about something, earlier."

He gave Justin's meal. "And what's that something?"

"Mom told me to keep it as secret," he answered.

"I will find it out soon, so why don't you tell it now?"

"Knowing your brother, Clejo. He will not stop until it didn't justify him," I said.

I opened the tupperware occupying my meal. It smells good.

"Ah- I'm still full, enjoy your meal. I gotta go!"

"Wait!" Justin tried to stop him, but Clejo didn't look back.

"Something's suspicious," he said.

Seems like we have the same observation. Well, I also sense that there's something wrong. Forget about that, maybe his reaction earlier is just new for me.

"There you go again, let's just eat" I said.

The meal smells good.

"No, I sensed it!"

"Justin, shut up. Have your breakfast!"

Fyi, our office is located here in Justin's House. I also live here, to work with him. I think staying here, is not a issue for Maia, his wife.

•••

After talking to Justin at the office, I went on my room.

I'm looking outside my window, watching him outside. He's bringing his things on the trunk of his car.

"Will he go home?" I murmured. I saw his suitcase and he also placed it on the trunk. I went back on my bed.

He will leave me here alone. Why not, Bernice? Why not?

I look at my phone when I heard it's ringing. Someone is calling me.

I took it. "Justin?"

I answered the call, and take a seat on my bed.

"Hello?"

"I will go home, since we don't have a case to deal," he said from the other line.

"Okay. I'm going to be fine here," I said.

"Good. Just a reminder, don't forget to lock the doors every time you are inside," he said.

"And why would I do that?"

"Just for your safety, please follow. I gotta go take care, Bernice."

"Wait, tell Collete that I miss her so much," I said on a high tone of my voice.

"Okay, I'll tell her."

"Take care, Justine. Go home safe."

"Of course. Do you still have something to say?"

"Ah, tell her also that I'll visit her soon," well I think that's the last reminder.

"Sure. I gotta go, again don't let the doors unlocked."

That's the last line he said to me. Well I'm smiling here alone. I'm like a jerk here, who laughs even there's no one around.

Holycrap, Bernice! Move on.

It's cold, I should make some coffee to fight this.

"Justin Arcega," I muttered.

Maia is very lucky, well at the same time unlucky. For Justin, she is suspicious in just one wrong move. She's like having her personal CCTV camera. But Justin is a man, not just a man so she's so lucky of having him. They have one daughter, they have a lovely Collete. So envying.

I sighed. That should be me. Me, I'm still single. Still complaining why I'm single, but when there's someone who wants to date me I don't like. I don't know, I just don't like them.

"Ta da, instant coffee!"

Here I go again. I hate being alone, I can't control my craziness.

What should I do now, I'm all alone?

I placed my coffee on a round table near my bed. I took my phone and checked my contacts.

"Should I call him?"

Nah. He's driving it may cause an accident. I refused my plan. I'll just talk to him tomorrow.

For now, I'll just enjoy the night. Well at least, he joined me at dinner time. I think after this, I will go to sleep.

Why peoples, why are you saying that you can't sleep after drinking a cup of coffee? Hey, I exist. Coffee is my sleeping pills.
