Chapter 3
I boarded my plane earbuds still in place. When I got to my seat I was shocked. I had been placed in the premium section with a reclined seat and a small screen to look at. A girl with a blond bob and what appeared to be grown out bangs swept to the side looked up at me smiling. “First time,” she said gesturing for me to sit, “this is your seat, right? Or are sneaking in!”
“ANI! I- I mean no. I mean yes, yes this is my seat.” I internally slapped myself.
The girl laughed at me loudly, too loud, “You do know you’re on a flight to Korea, you don’t have to correct yourself to English. I blushed embarrassed just realizing her Korean visuals. I bowed to her, “joesonghabnida.” She rolled her eyes and told me to just sit and not to apologize for that either. I sat next to her praying this wasn’t how the whole flight would go. Luckily she quickly fell asleep leaving me to listen to my music in peace. WayV’s “Take off” played loudly tuning out the world for me. About an hour later the girl awakened.like the energy bunny ready to go. She blabbed my head off seemingly not realizing I wasn’t listening. “Jeez, you could at least pretend to listen to me,” she shrugged turning away from me.
“I’m so sorry what did you say”
She lit up like a light bulb, “I was asking if you are visiting family in Korea.”
“K-kinda, but that’s not the point of my visit”, my cheeks turned red at the thought of having to tell her the real reason.
“Then what are you going for.”
“JYP auditions,” I said praying she wouldn’t find me weird or in over my head. She flashed a huge pearly white smile and I braced myself for her to burst out laughing at me.
She let out a small giggle her eyes disappearing with the smile, “Really! I am too! By the way, my name is Yang Sun-Hi but my English name is Sunny. You can call me either.”
I let out a huge sigh relieved, “wow what a coincidence, my name is Jeong-Sa but my English name is Miracle. I prefer Miracle.
“I like Jeong-Sa more. Did you know Jeong represents chastity, loyalty, virtues, and gentleness? I think it suits you.” She winked at me. This girl is the definition of a 4D personality, I smiled to myself, I actually didn’t know that was the meaning of my name maybe I could start going by it while I’m in Korea. Sun-Hi suddenly frowned but before I could ask what’s wrong she looked down at her vibrating phone. Without a bright smile, I could finally see her facial features clearly. The fact is, she’s gorgeous. Her round brown eyes held every emotion and she had small heart-shaped lips that disappeared when she smiled. She had a natural oval face shape and eyes that could pierce your soul if she didn’t flash her beautifully aligned teeth so much. I looked away not wanting to get caught staring and focused on the blue and red seat in front of me. I clicked the movie button on my screen and my favorite drama Hotel Del Luna was available. Sun-Hi’s phone vibrated once more and she put it back in her bag.
“Why did you ignore it- OMG that was such an invasive question,” I tapped myself on the forehead.
“It’s fine. It was my dad, he lives in California. He doesn’t want me to be an idol he wants me to be a doctor or at least make it in the US where it’s not as demanding,” though she was talking so seriously her smile grin never left.
I quickly contemplated what I would say, “The way I see it it’s going to be hard either way and as long as you are happy.” She smiled at me and told me to start the drama.
After about over 5 episodes of ‘Hotel del Luna’ Sunny had gotten chatty again. “So, what are you gonna do for your audition?”, she asked.
“I’m going to sing “Slump” by Stray Kids. They are my favorite group.”
“Wait but isn’t that mostly rap and falsettos? You must have some extreme talent- OMG you’re a female rapper! Those are so rare, especially one that can hit a falsetto too.”
I nervously giggled, “ya well I know I can rap but I haven’t sung in years.”
“Don’t worry you’ll be fine!”
Food was then passed out to us and let’s be real, it was one of the worst things I had ever tasted. One tall white man with graying hair that needed a haircut stood up out of his seat cursing the attendant. He threw the meal on the floor spitting everywhere as he shouted. The woman that sat next to him shivered in her skin letting her dark curly hair fall in her face seemingly hiding it. I felt Sunny standing up next to me sliding in front of me for a better view. Suddenly the woman stood up and encouraged the angry man to sit down. Her olive skin tone reddened as the man glared back at her with a drunken expression. “Who are you to say anything. This ridiculous ring means nothing! Your the same to a mutt, got me on this freakin plane! I want an immediate landing don’t nobody want to go to this 3rd world Asian playground!”, he spat at the woman, and the attendant, “Never disrespect me again b**ch,” he lifted his hand the whole plane gasping in shock.
“Ya! Don’t you know outside drinks aren’t allowed on the plane, everyone can smell it. It’s terrible by the way.” Sun-hi had given the man a high-five to his risen hand. Another girl stepped up, lifting the man’s wife who had fallen in tears, “domestic abuse can land you a few years in prison as well, I don’t think you’d last a second.” The glares coming from Sun-hi and the other girl were identically deadly. Their slim dark eyes matched each other in growing anger. Not making eye contact with the pair the man sat down next to his shivering wife. “Ya forget that may we switch seats and he sits over there,” the other girl asked the flight attendant who kindly approved with a bow. She then sat next to the woman and the man angrily stomped to the other empty seat. Sunny came back to sit down clearing her throat and shyly sitting.
“Oh my gosh! You and that girl were amazing! Are you okay, you could’ve gotten hurt! Who on earth is she!”, I couldn’t believe what had just happened not even when I had seen it with my very own eyes. The same girl who smiled ear to ear and talked my ears off constantly had just done...done that.
“Oh, that’s my sister, Eun-hi, she is trying with me. But you know we did get him good didn’t we, Haha,” she giggled glancing over to where her sister sat talking to the still shivering woman. “She used to want to be a therapist until she learned how to sing and I got the idea of being idols together.”
It was my turn to smile ear to ear, “idol sisters fighting idiots, you’ve got to be kidding! Sun-hi and Eun-hi are y’all twins!”
“Kinda, she was born August 22 at 6:34 pm and I was born August 23 at 5:02 am. It was a long night,” she joked smiling.
I lit up as realization hit, “Your zodiacs are separated by a day, that’s so cool.” We sat and giggled together about her sister and her. I could already feel our friendship and - I hate to get my hopes up - career together as it takes off.
