Chapter 6 – The Gathering Shadows
The sky over Kuroyami High hung heavy with gray clouds, almost as if the heavens themselves were suffocating. Students rushed through the corridors, laughter and chatter filling the air. But for Rei Takahashi, the noise felt distant — muffled under the weight of his thoughts.
Ever since that day Ami had avoided him, her once confident smile was now tainted with hesitation. She caught glimpses of him in the halls, but each time their eyes met, she would quickly look away. She had begun to sense something… different.
Rumors whispered about Rei’s sudden change — his cold stare, his calm but cutting words, his strange disappearances after school. No one knew that late at night, Rei could see shadows that others could not — wraith-like figures lurking at the edges of reality.
And he could hear them.
"She will regret it… they always do…"
Chapter 7 – Ami’s First Regret
Ami sat alone in the quiet of the library. Her friends had left for lunch, but she couldn’t shake the strange, gnawing feeling in her chest. She replayed the past — his kind gestures, the times he stood up for her, the soft way he looked at her — and then, the countless times she laughed at him, rejected him, and told him to “just move on.”
Now, Rei’s presence was like a blade — sharp, distant, and cold. She found herself… missing him.
"Why do I feel this way now?” she thought.
But before she could untangle her thoughts, a deep shadow slithered across the wall. Ami blinked — but it was gone.
Chapter 8 – The First Breach
That night, Rei wandered the streets near the abandoned train station. The air was unnaturally still. From the darkness beyond the tracks, a thin crack of shimmering blackness opened in the air — like glass breaking in reverse.
From it, something crawled out.
Its form was human-shaped, but its body was made entirely of swirling darkness, its face featureless except for two glowing white eyes.
Rei didn’t flinch.
“Another one,” he muttered, drawing the silver dagger he kept hidden under his jacket.
The creature lunged. Rei moved faster than a human should be able to — shadows themselves seemed to aid him — and in a single, precise motion, the monster dissolved into black mist.
The crack in the air slowly sealed, but Rei knew… the breaches were becoming more frequent.
Chapter 9 – Whispers in the Hall
At school the next day, Ami noticed Rei’s hand — faintly bandaged.
She almost asked, but fear stopped her. Something about his eyes told her he was not the same boy she once knew.
Rumors spread quickly.
“They say Rei was seen near the old train station at night.”
“I heard someone screaming there… and then silence.”
Ami’s curiosity and guilt pulled her toward him, but each time she took a step, he seemed to fade further away.
Chapter 10 – The Warning
In an empty stairwell, Rei cornered a student — not out of malice, but to warn him.
“You were near the breach last night. Stay away from the station. If you value your life.”
The boy stammered, “B-Breach? What are you—”
Before he could finish, a cold gust of wind swept through the hall, carrying with it a whisper only Rei could hear:
"They’re coming for the school…"
Chapter 11 – Ami’s Vision
That night, Ami had a nightmare.
She stood in the school gymnasium, surrounded by shadowy figures. They didn’t attack her — instead, they whispered Rei’s name over and over, their voices growing louder until the walls cracked and darkness swallowed her whole.
She woke up trembling. But one thing was clear — the shadowy figures in her dream were real.
Chapter 12 – The Second Breach
Two days later, during class, a sudden blackout plunged the school into darkness. The windows darkened as if something massive blocked the sun.
A loud cracking sound echoed from the ceiling. A black fissure opened mid-air, and three shadow monsters poured out, their limbs twisted and unnatural.
Screams erupted. Students ran in panic.
But Rei… simply stood. His dagger materialized in his hand as if called by thought.
“You picked the wrong place,” he whispered.
Chapter 13 – The Fight in the Hallway
Rei’s movements were inhuman — every slash of his dagger tore through the shadow creatures, their forms dissolving into mist. But for every one he killed, another seemed to crawl from the breach.
Ami, frozen at the end of the hallway, finally saw the truth — Rei was fighting monsters that shouldn’t exist.
“R-Rei!” she cried.
But he didn’t even glance her way.
Chapter 14 – The Sealing
With a sharp motion, Rei drew a circle on the floor using a silver powder from his pocket. The circle pulsed with light, and with a guttural chant, the breach slammed shut. The remaining monsters hissed and evaporated.
The lights flickered back on. Students murmured about “a blackout” and “hallucinations,” but Ami knew she had seen something real.
Chapter 15 – Confrontation
Ami cornered Rei after school.
“What were those things? Why didn’t you tell anyone?”
Rei’s gaze was cold. “It’s not your problem.”
“It is my problem! You could’ve been—”
“Save your concern,” Rei interrupted. “You didn’t care before. Don’t start now.”
His words cut deeper than she expected.
Chapter 16 – Ami’s Confession to Herself
That night, Ami stared at her ceiling.
“I… I think I loved him all along,” she whispered.
But now, he was so far away — a different person entirely.
Chapter 17 – The Gathering Storm
More breaches began appearing across the city. Rei worked alone, sealing them one by one, but the toll was visible — his bandages grew more frequent, his eyes darker.
Ami secretly followed him one night… and what she saw would haunt her.
Chapter 18 – The Shadow Lord’s Mark
In an alley, Rei faced a massive shadow beast unlike any before. Its voice was deep, ancient.
“You are not like the others, human… You carry the mark.”
The creature slashed his chest, and a black sigil burned into his skin.
Rei collapsed to one knee, pain tearing through him. Ami gasped from her hiding place.
Chapter 19 – Ami’s Decision
Ami dragged Rei to safety, ignoring his protests. As she cleaned his wounds, she finally said,
“I don’t care if you hate me now. I’m not leaving you alone in this.”
For the first time in weeks, Rei’s gaze softened — but only for a moment.
“You’ll regret this, Ami.”
“No,” she said firmly. “I regret letting you go before.”
Chapter 20 – The Night of the Blood Moon
The blood moon rose high over the school. The largest breach yet split open in the courtyard, and hundreds of shadow creatures poured through. Students screamed and scattered.
Rei stood at the center, dagger in one hand, black sigil glowing on his chest. Ami stood beside him, trembling but determined.
The Shadow Lord’s voice boomed from beyond the breach:
“Bring me the marked one… and the girl who regrets.”
And as the first wave of monsters charged, Rei whispered to Ami,
“Stay close. This is just the beginning.”
