chapter 1: The stranger's kiss

Twisted Vows

The soft sunlight filtered through the curtains, casting golden stripes across Avira’s face as she lay curled up in bed. Her peaceful sleep was abruptly broken by a loud knock on her door.

“Avira! Utho jaldi!” her mom called out from the other side. “Tumhari cousin ki shaadi ka card aaya hai!”

Avira groaned, rolling over with her pillow on her face. “Shaadi ka card subah-subah dikhane ka kya excitement hai, Mom?”

But her mother had already barged in, placing the heavy, glittery invitation on her bedside table.

“Dekho toh sahi! Kitna sundar card hai! Agle hafte shaadi hai Delhi mein.”

Still half-asleep, Avira sat up and lazily picked up the card. Her eyes scanned the names and the dates, and her brain finally woke up.

“Oh God, she’s actually getting married…” she mumbled. “We’re really going for this?”

Her mom nodded excitedly. “Haan! Toh taiyaar ho jao. Shopping, packing, sab kuch karna hai.”

---

A few days later…

The wedding was still a few days away, so Avira decided to let loose before all the family drama began. She and her best friends headed to one of the trendiest clubs in the city for a night out.

Loud music. Blinking lights. People everywhere. The air buzzed with energy.

“Let’s play something!” one of her friends shouted over the music. “Truth or Dare?”

Everyone agreed.

When it was Avira’s turn, her friend smirked and said, “Dare.”

“Okay,” she said, eyes gleaming. “You have to kiss a total stranger!”

“What?! No way—” Avira started, but the girls were already cheering and pushing her forward.

“You’re not backing out!”

Avira rolled her eyes, laughing nervously. Her gaze darted around the club… and then she saw him.

A man leaning against the bar, dressed in black, with an unreadable expression and piercing eyes. Something about him was magnetic — calm but dangerous. A complete stranger… yet oddly familiar.

Before she could overthink it, she walked straight up to him, grabbed his collar, and kissed him.

Just like that.

For a moment, he froze.

Then… he kissed her back.

Not gently. Not awkwardly.

But like he meant it.

Avira pulled back, wide-eyed, her heart racing in her chest. What the hell just happened?

The man simply stared at her, a slow smirk tugging at his lips — and that smirk scared her more than the kiss.

Embarrassed, shocked, and overwhelmed, Avira rushed back to her friends.

She tried to laugh it off… but that kiss would haunt her longer than she expected.

She didn’t know his name yet. To her, he was still just the stranger. The one with eyes too intense and a presence that pulled her in before she even realized it.

The moment their lips touched, her world had tilted. At first, she thought he’d pull away. That he’d be startled. But instead — he kissed her back. Not hesitantly. Not awkwardly.

With depth.

With intensity.

With something that felt far too real for a stranger.

His hands had found their way to her neck, gentle but firm, grounding her as her brain short-circuited. It wasn’t just a kiss anymore — it was something else entirely.

And that terrified her.

She pulled away abruptly, breath uneven, eyes wide. She didn’t say a word. Just turned around and walked — no, ran — back to her friends. But even among the laughter and teasing, she couldn’t focus. Their voices blurred, and her mind played that moment on loop.

The lights felt too bright. The music too loud. The air too heavy.

So she slipped out of the club, stepping into the cool night air.

Her heart was still racing.

Her hands trembled as she touched her lips, feeling the ghost of his kiss still lingering there. It had been her first kiss. Her first real one — not the stolen pecks in childhood games, not imagined ones from silly crushes. This was different.

She didn’t even know his name.

But she knew his eyes — how they held hers like the world stopped moving.

She knew his touch — how it didn’t scare her, how it didn’t feel wrong.

She took a cab home, curled into the window seat, watching the night blur past. But no matter how far she got from the club, her thoughts remained there. With him.

By the time she stepped inside her house, everything was quiet. The lights were dim, her parents asleep.

But her heart?

Wide awake.

She locked her room door behind her and sat on her bed, hugging her knees to her chest. Her cheeks burned from the memory. She buried her face into her pillow, trying to will the blush away.

"What the hell just happened…?" she whispered into the dark.

It wasn’t like her to be this reckless. This impulsive. And yet, in that one moment, she had acted without thinking — and for some reason, it didn’t feel like a mistake.

That man…
