The leader in charge entered the boardroom first, pointing his weapon in several directions, making sure the place was safe. Then he noticed that the woman next to the CEO's corpse was in shock, so he stopped the other agents and approached carefully, introducing himself.
"Miss, I'm Officer Fort, don't be afraid, we're here to help," he explained, putting the weapon behind his waist and raising both hands in a sign of peace.
Loreta said nothing, only staring at the face of the policeman who was approaching slowly. There was something about him that inspired confidence, so she nodded, still hugging her boss.
Fort reached her side and could see that the young woman's blouse was covered in blood, her eyes had a lost look, her body was trembling uncontrollably, and in one of her hands she held a phone firmly. Then he inquired.
"Miss, are you okay?" He bent down to her height to observe her eyes and confirm that she was in shock, but then she nodded with a movement of her head and he smiled simply out of courtesy. "Miss, were you hurt?"
"No, no," she whispered.
"Can you tell me your name, trust me, I need to know your name," he spoke calmly, without intending to scare her.
"Loreta, Loreta Rosietti," she said, and the officer nodded.
"Very well, Loreta, do you work here?"
"Yes, I'm Mr. Lewis O'Connor's secretary, or rather, I was," she whispered, realizing that she would no longer have a job.
"Do you know what happened here? Did you see anything?"
"I... I don't know... it all happened so fast... those men... they came into the office and shot everyone," she replied in a trembling voice, trying to look at the officer but her eyes felt heavy, they were swollen from crying so much. "They killed them without mercy and when I entered the room, I found my boss on the floor and I couldn't do anything. It was too late."
"They?" he inquired with intrigue.
"Yes, they. There were two men, dressed in black and wearing balaclavas on their heads and now they're going to kill me, they'll come for me," she spoke non-stop, trying to say everything at once so she could wake up from this nightmare, remembering that she had to leave the company and follow the instructions her boss gave her.
"Did those people see you?"
"No, but they have my wallet, my ID, everything."
"Don't worry, you are our witness and we will protect you," he commented to reassure her, placing a hand on the young woman's shoulder. "Loreta, now you must let go of the CEO so we can do our job."
"He's dead and he has no one, only his wife," the secretary covered her mouth with a hand and then exclaimed, "Oh my God! How will I tell that woman that her husband was killed?"
"Don't worry, we'll take care of everything, but now we need to collect evidence. Miss, you need to step away, please accompany my colleague," the officer indicated, and she nodded.
A female agent came to her side and carefully helped Loreta get up, gently taking her arm and pulling her away from the corpse.
"Miss, please let's get out of here, we need to ask you a couple of routine questions," she murmured.
Then the secretary reacted to the warmth of the agent's hand on her skin and said, "I need to go home, those men have my wallet, they'll hurt my sister, I can't stay in this place," she shouted, looking desperately at the officer.
"Leave the interrogation for tomorrow, now accompany the witness to her home and leave a patrol car at the main entrance of the residence," Fort ordered, and the agent nodded.
"Very well."
Loreta left the boardroom, then she realized that she was holding the cell phone tightly in her hand, and on her finger was Lewis' ring, and a chill ran through her body. She quickly picked up her coat and put her boss's ring in her pocket. Although everything was unreal, and it seemed like a bad dream that she wanted to wake up from, she would follow Mr. O'Connor's instructions to the letter and look for his illegitimate son.
When she arrived at her apartment, the nanny was sitting on the small sofa, and from her expression it was evident that she was very annoyed, but when she saw Loreta she quickly got up and looked at her in astonishment. The secretary's face was covered in blood, her eyes were swollen from crying so much, and she was accompanied by a policewoman.
"Loreta, are you okay?" she asked, visibly worried, taking both of her arms to examine the young woman's body. "What happened to you? Were you mugged, were you hurt?"
Loreta couldn't speak, she was in a trance since she left the office, thinking that her life was again without direction. Now with her boss dead, she was unemployed and with a lot of debts to pay, and most importantly, her sister had to continue in rehabilitation and without money it was impossible to pay for her treatment. Sadly, she thought of her sister, she was making great progress and now she couldn't stop attending. Automatically she went to the bathroom, completely ignoring her employee's interrogation. At this moment she only needed a shower, to remove the smell of Lewis's cigar from her body, to scrub her skin with soap until eliminating the last drop of blood and to try to forget the ordeal she lived.
"Officer, what happened?" the nanny inquired, seeing that she was not getting any response from Loreta.
"The young lady witnessed a murder, for that reason she is in shock and I fear that her life is in danger," she replied seriously.
"Can I know who was murdered?" the curiosity was much greater than her concern.
"Mr. Lewis O'Connor, the president of the company where the young lady works," she replied.
"Oh my god!" she exclaimed, bringing her hand to her chest in an exaggerated way.
"Madam, I understand that you are Lucia's nanny and that you work for Loreta."
"That's right."
"Then I'm very sorry but I must ask you to leave immediately," she ordered, and seeing the surprise on the woman's face she clarified, "Mrs. Loreta is in police custody and anyone outside the house must leave this place. The men who attacked Mr. O'Connor may come after her and it is necessary to preserve the physical integrity of all the people who live in the building."
"I understand, my apartment is on the fifth floor, anything you need I am at your service," said the woman desperately looking for her bag before running out of that place, without even waiting for payment.
Loreta was under the shower, the water turned red under her feet and the rusty smell of blood mixed with the perfume of the soap, she scrubbed her face desperately trying in vain to forget everything, until finally she stopped when she saw that the foam was white and there was no trace of anything.
Quietly she closed the faucet, covered herself with the towel and walked to the mirror, then cleaning with her hand the steam that prevented seeing her face she said aloud.
"You are strong Loreta! You can and as always you will find a solution to this chaos!"
A little more encouraged she grabbed the clothes that had scattered on the floor to leave them in the laundry basket when the ring fell out of the pocket of her coat and began to spin like a top on the ceramic. That simple hypnotic movement gave Loreta enough confidence to call the White Dragon, so looking for the cell phone she had between her clothes, she dialed that number and waited impatiently for someone on the other side of the line to answer...
