The Harmony Hill Winter Carnival turned the school into a blur of sparkles and chaos. Locker doors wore snowflake stickers, the quad smelled like hot chocolate, and someone was already selling glitter candy at triple the usual price. The sports field became a carnival ground with fairy lights strung like constellations. But the highlight of it all?
The “Bake & Bond” Competition. One team. One dessert. One story behind it. Unless you were Manik Malhotra, age twelve, and had to bake with the one girl who made your heart drum louder than your actual drum set.
At the Bake Room
The bake room was a battlefield of flour clouds and broken eggs.
Manik said while eyeing the flour, “Are we baking or launching a science experiment?”
Nandini says while tying her hair up, “We’re baking. You’re catastrophizing.”
Cabir says by grabbing frosting behind them, “I feel like I’m third-wheeling an emotional soufflé.”
Mukti, “You guys better not start flirting over batter. I’m allergic.”
Navya whispering to Abhimanyu, “They look cute. Like bickering cupcakes.”
Manik cracked an egg, mid-sentence, and—splat—it exploded all over the counter.
Manik, “Oops. That egg died for love.”
Nandini, “It died because you were talking while holding it.”
They moved around each other like planets.... sometimes colliding, sometimes orbiting in perfect rhythm. He sprinkled sugar where she had already added salt; she swatted his hand when he tried to taste raw batter.
Manik says while scribbling frosting ideas, “I say we theme it: ‘Love and Lava Cakes.’”
Nandini grinning, “We’ll call it ‘Galactic Glaze.’ Yours will probably explode.”
Manik, “Explosive cupcakes. New genre. Very us.”
Cabir snapped a photo. “Title: Flour Power Couple.”
Decorating Cupcakes The final tray held nine cupcakes: glitter swirls, constellation icing, a Mars-shaped chocolate one (thanks to Mukti), and one shaky heart Manik piped by hand.
Manik while pointing says, “That one’s you. Sparkly. Impossible to ignore.”
Nandini says mocking, “And overbaked?”
Manik, “No. Just perfectly chaotic.”
Abhimanyu leaned on the counter. “Bro, if you don’t confess soon, I swear I’ll write a romance novel myself.”
Cabir, “He already did. Chapter One: Frosting Feelings.”
Navya, “Let them be. The slow burn is delicious.”
They all laughed, but Nandini caught the way Manik’s fingers brushed flour off her wrist, a touch so light it almost didn’t exist except she felt it everywhere.
The Confession – Behind the Stall
The judging was over. They came second (Mukti may have bribed someone). The cupcakes were half-eaten, frosting smudged across napkins. Manik tugged Nandini toward the art hallway a quiet corner with fairy lights and zero spectators. His palms were clammy, but his heartbeat like a drum solo.
Manik, “So… I think I’ve reached critical sugar overload."
Nandini while laughing says, “You had five. I warned you."
Manik, “I also didn’t listen when you warned me about falling for you. So I’m consistent.”
She froze, blinking. Nandini says softly, “Did you just—?”
Manik while blushing, voice tumbling out, “Yeah. I like you, Nandini. Not just because you bake like a wizard or talk about Orion like he’s your boyfriend.”
Nandini’s cheeks flamed. “He’s my favorite star. But you… you’re kinda stealing the sky.”
They edged closer. His voice dropped.
Manik, “Sometimes I wish I could bottle you up like stardust and keep you in my backpack. You’re that important.”
Nandini while teasing, “That sounds illegal.”
Manik, “Yeah, well… loving you feels a bit like breaking school rules. Dangerous but worth it.”
She reached into her coat pocket and pulled out the Saturn cupcake. It was smushed, frosting cracked, but still glowing with sprinkles.
Nandini, “I saved this for you. Because it’s us. Messy. Cosmic. Too sweet.”
Manik staring, “You gave Cabir the comet one?”
Nandini, “Comets disappear. Saturn stays.” His hands trembled as he took it.
Manik says quietly, “I like you, Nandini. Like… sit next to you forever and never shut up kind of like.”
Nandini smiling), “And I like you. Even when you spill flour and ruin recipes.”
Manik, “You ruin me. In a good way.”
Nandini giggling, “That was cheesy.”
Manik, “I’m a cupcake boy. I’m allowed.”
Their fingers brushed. Neither pulled away. Just twelve-year-old hearts blooming in frosting and whispers.
The Walk Back – With Their Chaotic Friends
They returned to the booth side by side—grinning, glowing, practically floating.
Cabir pretending to faint, “He did it! He’s no longer emotionally constipated!”
Mukti, “Everyone shut up. I want details.”
Navya, “Did they kiss?”
Abhimanyu checking Nandini’s face, “No lip gloss smudges. Just blush.”
Manik to Cabir, proudly holding the Saturn cupcake, “She confessed with Saturn. Beat that.”
Cabir, “One day I’ll propose with Pluto.”
Nandini’s Diary That Night
“Today I baked. Today I blushed. Today I realized the boy who punched bullies also stole my cupcake heart. He compared me to constellations, spilled flour like it was his love language, and still made me smile. And maybe just maybe I’m okay with that.”
