The New Years Spark of Light
The hospital smelled faintly of disinfectant and rain. Emi sat on the edge of the bed, her hands twisting the hem of her sweater. The doctor’s words were clear, almost cruel in their softness.
“Your kidney… it’s weakening. Five months, Emi. Maybe less.”
Her heart didn’t break—not the way she thought it would. Instead, it sank with a quiet acceptance, like a lantern extinguished in the wind.
That night, she wrote in her notebook. October 15th five months left... I won't cry. ill live untill the last fireworks.fades .she silently closed her diary.laying on her bed. While her mom cooked her favourite noodles . emi tried to normal but it kept bothering her. the next day she arrives at school her friend waiting eagerly for her "emi-San!, your here?what happened?* her friend asked emi didn't want to make her sad.so she lied about it." Nothing-! Just stress"…her friend knew she was lying about something and hiding it. "just stress?." her friend asked her."yea! just stress from all the work!" emi-san said.Emi went searching for kaito he was standing by Emi's classroom leaning on the wall with a concerned look on his face he turned to face Emi and Emi told kaito about the situation outside the school and in the park's bench Emi's chin on her knees she thought twice before telling kaito but eventually she knew she to tell Someone about it....and she trusted kaito she sighed leaning on kaitos shoulder wanting to tell him about it she hesitated at first but she found herself opening up to him .
When Emi told Kaito, he froze. His hand, halfway to reaching hers, trembled before falling back to his side.
“You’re kidding,” he said, but her smile gave him the answer.
They sat by the schools fountain where autumn leaves swirled like dying embers. Emi leaned forward, resting her chin on her knees.
“Don’t treat me like glass. Just… let’s make this the happiest New Year ever.”
Kaito clenched his fists, silently swearing. He couldn’t fight her illness. But he could fight her loneliness."I'll make sure you have the happiest time of your life.", he looked at her with sadness in his eyes . It was November emi had made a list for what she will do before she dies
Visit the sea at dawn.
Eat taiyaki in the first snow.
Watch the Christmas lights in the city.
Write a wish at the shrine.
Kaito looked at the list and muttered, “You forgot number five.”
She blinked. “What’s that?”
“Let me carry your burdens.”
So November became a journey. They took the early train to the coast, watched the sun crawl out of the sea, and Emi whispered, “It feels like the sky is reborn.”the sky looks beautiful snow falling down landing on Emi's hair when kaito gently pats Emi's head "your so cute.." he chuckles.
