--- Whispers Across Time – Chapter 4: A Heart That Remembers The rain poured e

...

The rain poured endlessly, the sound of it muffling the whole world. Ren stood in front of Airi, trembling, his eyes wide as if he had just seen a ghost.

“I… remember you,” he whispered, his voice shaking.

Airi’s heart pounded so hard she thought it would break her ribs. “R-remember… me?”

He stepped closer, rain dripping from his hair, his hand reaching toward hers but stopping just before touching. “Your face… your voice… it’s in my head, like a memory I never knew I had. A promise… a promise I couldn’t keep.”

Tears stung Airi’s eyes. She didn’t know if they came from his words or from the dream still haunting her. “I see it too,” she admitted, her voice trembling. “Every night… I dream of you. And every time, it ends with blood. With loss.”

His eyes softened, the tension in them breaking. Slowly, he took her hand in his, and this time, she didn’t pull away. His warmth seeped into her skin, steady and grounding, yet her heart raced wildly.

“Airi,” he murmured, his voice low and raw. “Even if I don’t understand why… all I know is, I can’t let you go. Not again.”

The sincerity in his words broke through her fear. The storm around them blurred into nothing as his thumb brushed gently against her knuckles. It felt like the touch of someone who had done this a thousand times before, in another world, another lifetime.

Her chest tightened. “Ren…”

For a moment, the space between them closed—her lips parting, his breath brushing against her skin. The tension hung heavy, electric, almost unbearable.

But just as her heart leaned toward him, the sound of footsteps splashing through rain snapped them apart.

A shadow moved quickly past the school gates, vanishing into the night.

Airi turned but saw nothing. Only darkness.

Ren’s hand tightened protectively around hers. His eyes were still stormy with confusion, but one thing was certain—he wasn’t going to let her slip away.

---

The rain stopped suddenly, leaving only silence. Airi’s pulse raced as Ren leaned closer, his lips brushing against her ear as he whispered—

“Even if fate tries to take you from me again… I’ll fight it.”

Her heart skipped. Was this the beginning of love reborn—or a warning that history was already repeating?

---

Rain poured as Ren caught Airi’s trembling hand.

“I… remember you,” he whispered, eyes burning with something deeper than this lifetime.

Airi’s breath hitched. “I dream of you too… but always losing you.”

His thumb brushed her knuckles, tender and desperate. “Not this time. I won’t let fate steal you again.”

Their hearts leaned closer, breaths mingling, the storm fading into silence. For one fragile moment, it felt like love reborn.

But a shadow passed in the rain, watching.

Airi shivered, torn between warmth and dread.

Was this the beginning… or history repeating itself?
