The Second Crossing

It had been weeks since that day at the garage, but Christiana Jade found herself thinking about it more often than she cared to admit. The memory of his words—sharp, unfiltered—lingered in her mind like a splinter she couldn’t shake free.

She told herself it was irritation. Nothing more. That mechanic… Paul, was it? He was arrogant. Insolent. Rude. That should have been the end of it. Men like him did not belong in her world, and she certainly didn’t belong in his.

And yet… here she was, steering her car down the same cracked road that led straight to his garage.

Christiana’s excuse, even to herself, was thin. The car could use another inspection, she reasoned as she slowed to a stop. But she knew the truth: she didn’t need her car checked. She just wanted to see him again. She wanted to understand why he had left such an imprint on her thoughts.

The garage looked just as it had before—faded sign, peeling paint, the air heavy with oil and heat. Paul was there, as if he hadn’t moved in weeks, sleeves rolled up, sweat darkening his shirt as he leaned over an engine.

He looked up at the sound of her car. His brow furrowed, but his eyes flickered with something she couldn’t read—surprise, maybe even amusement.

“Well, well,” he said, wiping his hands on a rag. “Look who came back. Let me guess, your car broke down again on the way back from another fancy party?”

Christiana lifted her chin. “No. I just… wanted it checked. Better safe than stranded.”

Paul’s smirk deepened. “Or maybe you just missed me.”

Her eyes widened, and heat rushed to her cheeks. “Don’t flatter yourself. I could have gone anywhere. I just happened to be nearby.”

“Uh-huh,” Paul said, circling her car with slow, deliberate steps. “Out of all the garages in this city, you happened to end up here. Pure coincidence, I’m sure.”

Christiana crossed her arms. “Are you going to inspect the car or stand there making assumptions?”

He chuckled, leaning against the hood. “Relax, princess. I’ll get to it. Just funny seeing you here again.”

Something about his tone was different this time. Less sharp, less mocking. It was still teasing, but lighter-almost playful. Christiana hated that part of her wanted to laugh.

“Maybe I just like giving business to struggling mechanics,” she shot back, her lips twitching despite herself.

Paul raised an eyebrow. “Generosity, huh? That’s new. Should I be grateful you blessed me with your presence?”

“Maybe you should,” she said, though her tone lacked its usual bite.

Paul bent to check under the hood, but he was smiling now, a genuine curve of his lips that caught her off guard. He worked quietly for a few moments, the only sounds the clink of tools and the hum of the city outside.

Finally, he straightened, closing the hood with a loud clang. “Car’s fine. Didn’t really need checking. Which makes me think… you really did come here just to see me.”

Christiana scoffed, her heart thudding uncomfortably fast. “Don’t be ridiculous.”

Paul leaned in slightly, his eyes holding hers. “Maybe. But I’m not the one lying to myself.”

For a second, the air between them tightened, charged with something neither could name. Christiana swallowed, her usual confidence faltering.

She turned quickly, sliding into the driver’s seat. “Thank you,” she said, her voice quieter than she meant it to be.

Paul stepped back, the faintest hint of satisfaction in his smile. “Anytime, princess. Drive safe.”

As Christiana pulled away, she gripped the steering wheel tighter than necessary. Her chest ached with confusion. She should hate him—his arrogance, his smirks, his refusal to show her the respect everyone else did. But instead, she felt something else creeping in. Something dangerous.

And Paul, watching her car disappear into the traffic, knew one thing for certain: he’d never forget the way her eyes softened, just for a heartbeat, when she looked at him.

The disdain was still there, but beneath it, something new was forming. Something neither of them could deny for long.
