The silence stretched between them.
Elara stood with her back against the shelf, her pulse hammering against her ribs. The library was nearly empty now. The distant sound of pages turning and footsteps fading somewhere between the aisles seemed impossibly far away.
Damien didn't move.
Neither did she.
For a moment, they simply stared at each other.
His eyes were unsettling. Not because they were cold. But because they weren't. There was focus in them. Intention. As if he had already decided something about her long before she had the chance to decide anything about him.
Elara: "Why do you keep doing this?"
Damien: "Doing what?"
Elara: "Showing up."
His expression barely changed.
Damien: "Because every time I leave, I find myself coming back."
Elara looked away first. The answer should have sounded flattering. Instead, it made her uneasy.
Elara: "That doesn't make any sense."
Damien: "It doesn't have to."
His voice remained low and controlled. Every word sounded deliberate.
Elara: "You don't know me."
Damien's gaze lingered on her face.
Damien: "No. Not yet."
The answer caught her off guard.
Not yet.
Not no.
Not you're right.
Not yet.
As if getting to know her wasn't a possibility. It was a certainty.
Elara: "You make a lot of assumptions."
Damien: "So do you."
She frowned.
Elara: "What assumptions have I made?"
Damien: "That I'm here to hurt you."
The words settled heavily between them.
Elara hesitated.
Elara: "Are you?"
Damien: "No."
The answer came instantly. Without hesitation. Without thought. And somehow that disturbed her more because he sounded honest.
She folded her arms across her chest.
Elara: "Then what do you want?"
Damien studied her for a long moment.
Damien: "You keep asking the same question."
Elara: "Because you never answer it."
A faint smile appeared.
Damien: "Fair enough."
For the first time since meeting him, he stepped back slightly, giving her space. The gesture surprised her.
Damien: "I want to understand you."
Elara laughed softly.
Elara: "That's it?"
Damien: "No."
The smile disappeared.
Damien: "I want to know why you're different."
Her eyebrows pulled together.
Elara: "Different from who?"
Damien: "Everyone else."
She shook her head.
Elara: "You don't even know me."
Damien: "Maybe. But I've watched how people talk to you."
The statement immediately made her uncomfortable.
Elara: "You've watched me?"
Damien: "Yes."
The honesty was alarming.
Damien: "You listen more than you speak. You watch people before deciding whether you trust them. And when you're nervous, you pretend to be annoyed."
Elara froze because he wasn't entirely wrong.
Elara: "I don't like being analyzed."
Damien: "Neither do I."
Elara: "Then stop doing it."
A smirk tugged at the corner of his lips.
Damien: "Then stop being interesting."
She stared at him. For a second she didn't know whether to be angry or amused.
Unfortunately, that made him smile.
Damien: "There it is."
Elara: "What?"
Damien: "That look."
Elara: "What look?"
Damien: "The one where you're trying not to smile."
Elara: "I'm not smiling."
Damien: "You almost were."
Elara rolled her eyes.
The gesture felt strangely normal.
Too normal.
Which was dangerous.
Because nothing about this situation was normal.
Nothing about him was normal.
She pushed away from the shelf.
Elara: "I should leave."
Damien: "Then leave."
The answer surprised her.
There was no attempt to stop her. No argument. No challenge. Just those two words.
Then leave.
Elara blinked.
Elara: "You're not going to stop me?"
Damien: "No. I don't want you here because you feel trapped."
The word hit her unexpectedly.
Trapped.
Because that was exactly how she'd felt ever since he'd entered her life. As though invisible walls had begun closing around her. As though every path somehow led back to him.
Damien seemed to notice the change in her expression.
Damien: "You look at me like I'm building a cage around you."
Elara: "Aren't you?"
Damien: "No. But you're afraid I am."
Elara didn't respond because she didn't know the answer.
Damien took another step back, creating even more distance between them. The movement was subtle, but she noticed it. Strangely, she felt the absence immediately.
Damien: "I want honesty, Elara."
She looked up sharply.
His gaze never left hers.
Damien: "And I want obedience."
The words settled heavily between them.
Not because he sounded threatening.
Because he sounded certain.
Elara: "Obedience?"
A faint smile touched his lips.
Damien: "Not fear. Never fear."
His voice remained calm and deliberate.
Damien: "I don't want someone who obeys because they're afraid of me. I want someone who chooses to trust me enough to follow my lead."
The library suddenly felt smaller and quieter.
Damien: "Fear breaks people. Trust doesn't."
Elara's heart stumbled.
She wasn't sure what unsettled her more.
The words.
Or how much he seemed to believe them.
Damien: "I want honesty because lies are useless. And I want obedience because constant resistance becomes exhausting."
His gaze softened slightly.
Damien: "But fear? No, Elara. If you're afraid of me, then I've already failed."
A long silence followed.
Damien noticed.
Of course he noticed.
Damien: "You see? That's what interests me."
Elara: "What is?"
Damien: "The fact that you keep fighting yourself."
Elara looked away. The truth hurt because she had been fighting herself. Ever since the party. Ever since the street. Ever since that first glance that had lasted one second too long.
Elara: "You think you know everything."
A faint smile touched his lips.
Damien: "No."
His voice was almost amused.
Damien: "I think you know less than you pretend to."
That earned him a glare.
Elara: "You're impossible."
Damien: "And yet you're still here."
The words landed with perfect accuracy because she was still there. She could have walked away minutes ago. But she hadn't.
The realization made her nervous.
Damien's expression softened slightly. Not enough to make him harmless. Just enough to make him human.
Damien: "What are you afraid of?"
The question caught her off guard.
She looked at him.
Really looked at him.
For the first time.
Not the mystery.
Not the obsession.
Not the danger.
Just the man.
And somehow that felt even more dangerous.
Elara: "I don't know."
The confession left her before she could stop it.
Damien nodded slowly.
Damien: "As strange as this sounds, that's the first honest thing you've said to me."
Elara laughed despite herself.
Elara: "And you've been completely honest?"
Damien: "No. Not completely."
The answer was immediate. No hesitation. No excuses.
For some reason, she respected that answer more than she would have respected a lie.
The silence returned, but it felt different now. Less sharp. Less threatening. More uncertain. Like two people standing at the edge of something neither fully understood.
Finally, Damien glanced toward the large windows. The sky outside had darkened.
Damien: "You should head home."
Elara frowned.
Elara: "You're telling me to leave?"
Damien: "Yes."
The answer startled her again.
Elara: "Why?"
His gaze returned to hers, and for the first time, she thought she saw exhaustion there. Real exhaustion. Not physical. Something deeper.
Damien: "Because if I keep standing here talking to you, I'm going to forget I was trying to take this slow."
Her heartbeat stumbled.
The honesty in his voice made it difficult to breathe.
Neither spoke. The words lingered between them, heavy, dangerous, real.
Damien stepped aside, giving her a clear path toward the exit.
Damien: "Go home, Elara."
She hesitated before nodding.
One step.
Then another.
She reached the end of the aisle. Almost free. Almost gone.
Then she stopped.
She turned and found him watching her. Still. Silent. Waiting. Not stopping her. Not calling her back. Just watching.
For reasons she couldn't explain, her chest tightened.
Because she suddenly understood something.
The trap she'd been feeling all this time wasn't Damien.
It wasn't his gaze.
Or his presence.
Or the way he seemed to appear everywhere.
The trap was uncertainty.
The trap was wanting answers and knowing he carried them.
The trap was walking away and knowing she'd think about him the entire night.
Damien noticed the look in her eyes.
A faint smile appeared.
Not victorious.
Not possessive.
Just knowing.
And somehow that was worse.
Damien: "Goodnight, Elara."
She swallowed.
Elara: "Goodnight, Damien."
Then she turned and walked away.
The cool evening air greeted her the moment she stepped outside, but it did nothing to calm the storm inside her. She could still hear his voice. Still feel his gaze. Still remember every word.
And no matter how hard she tried to convince herself otherwise, she knew one thing with absolute certainty.
This wasn't over.
Not even close.
