CHAPTER 4: THE PROPOSITION

Elena's hand trembled in his grip. Those eyes. She'd seen them before, she was certain now. But it was impossible. That night had been six years ago in a different hotel, in a moment of complete darkness and desperation. There was no way this powerful man, this king among men, had been the stranger who'd held her while she cried.

"Ms. Ross?" Alex's deep voice pulled her back to reality. He hadn't let go of her hand. "Are you alright? You look pale."

"I—I'm fine," Elena stammered, pulling her hand back quickly. The loss of contact felt wrong somehow, but she couldn't think about that now. "Thank you for being so kind to Leo."

"Your son is remarkable." Alex's gaze was intense, studying every detail of her face. "Very intelligent for his age."

"Thank you. He's my everything." Elena instinctively stepped closer to Leo, her protective instincts kicking in.

Alex noticed the gesture. A mother protecting her cub. It made something warm unfurl in his chest. "Ms. Ross, I'd like to speak with you privately. Do you have time after this event?"

"I—what?" Elena's eyes widened. "Speak with me? Why?"

"Business," Alex said smoothly, though his mind was racing with a thousand questions. Who was this woman? Why did touching her feel like coming home? And most importantly—was Leo his son?

"I don't understand. I'm just a small fashion designer. I have nothing that would interest someone like you."

"Let me be the judge of that." Alex pulled out a business card from his pocket and handed it to her. The card was thick, expensive, with gold embossing. "My assistant will call you within the hour to arrange a meeting. Today, if possible."

Elena stared at the card like it might burn her. "Mr. King, I really don't think—"

"Mommy, say yes!" Leo tugged at her dress. "Mr. King is so nice! Maybe he can help you find a store for your dresses!"

Alex's eyes sharpened. "You're looking for a retail space?"

Elena wanted to disappear. This was humiliating. "It's nothing. Just a small dream."

"I own half the commercial real estate in this city," Alex said matter-of-factly. "If you need space, I can help."

"I can't afford anything you own," Elena said quietly, her cheeks burning with embarrassment.

The principal suddenly appeared beside them, her smile so wide it looked painful. "Mr. King! Would you like to tour our facilities? We have a wonderful—"

"Not now," Alex cut her off without even looking at her. His eyes never left Elena's face. "Ms. Ross, my driver will wait for you outside. We'll talk in my car. It's more private."

"Your car?" Elena's voice rose slightly. "I can't just get into a car with a stranger!"

"I'm not a stranger. I'm Alexander King, and I just spent twenty minutes speaking to your son on stage in front of three hundred witnesses. You'll be perfectly safe." His tone softened slightly. "Please. I have a business proposition that could benefit us both."

Something in his voice made Elena pause. There was an urgency there, hidden beneath the commanding exterior. And God help her, she was desperate. Marcus had blocked every opportunity she'd found. She was running out of options, running out of money, running out of time.

"Okay," she whispered. "But just a conversation. Nothing more."

Alex's lips curved into the smallest smile. "Just a conversation."

Thirty minutes later, Elena found herself sitting in the most luxurious car she'd ever seen. The leather seats were softer than her bed. The interior gleamed with wood paneling and chrome. There was even a small refrigerator stocked with expensive water and drinks.

Leo sat between them, his eyes wide with wonder. "Mommy, this car is like a spaceship!"

"It's just transportation," Alex said, but his eyes were warm as he looked at the boy. "Leo, would you like some juice?"

"Yes please!" Leo accepted the juice box that Alex handed him, completely comfortable in the presence of this powerful stranger.

Elena's heart raced. Why was Leo so at ease with Alex? Her son was usually shy around new people, especially men. But with Alex, it was like he'd found a long-lost friend.

"So, Ms. Ross," Alex began, his full attention now on her. "Tell me about your fashion business."

Elena fidgeted with her purse. "There's not much to tell. I design clothes, mostly women's dresses. I learned in Paris, worked in a small boutique there for a few years. I came back hoping to open my own store, but..." She trailed off.

"But?" Alex prompted.

"But someone is blocking me. Every property I inquire about suddenly becomes unavailable." She didn't mention Marcus by name. It was too humiliating.

Alex's jaw tightened. He'd have Marcus Chen investigate who was sabotaging her within the hour. "I see. And you're raising Leo alone?"

Elena stiffened. "Yes. Is that a problem?"

"Not at all. I'm impressed. Single parenthood isn't easy, especially in this city." Alex leaned forward slightly. "How old is Leo exactly?"

"Five years and seven months," Elena answered, wondering why he cared about the specifics.

Alex did the math quickly. Conceived six years ago. Around the same time as that night. His heart pounded. "And his father?"

"Is not in the picture and never will be," Elena said firmly, her protective instincts flaring. "Leo is mine. Only mine."

"I wasn't suggesting otherwise." Alex held up his hands. "I apologize if I overstepped."

Elena took a deep breath, trying to calm down. "What did you want to discuss, Mr. King?"

Alex was quiet for a moment, his mind working through strategies, possibilities, risks. He needed this woman close. He needed to know the truth about Leo. And if his suspicions were correct, he needed to protect them both.

"I have a proposition for you, Ms. Ross. A business arrangement that would solve both our problems."

"What problems could you possibly have?" Elena asked incredulously. "You're one of the richest men in the country."

"Wealth doesn't solve everything," Alex said softly. "I need something that money can't buy. I need a wife."

Elena choked on air. "Excuse me?"

"A contract marriage. Purely business. One year, maybe two." Alex's voice was steady, but his eyes were intense. "You need protection from whoever is sabotaging you, and you need space for your business. I can provide both. In return, you'll pose as my wife for social events, live in my home, and help me navigate certain... family expectations."

"This is insane," Elena whispered. "You don't even know me."

"I know enough. You're a good mother. You're hardworking. You're honest." His voice dropped lower. "And I find myself very interested in getting to know you better."

Elena's breath hitched at the intensity in his gaze. "Why me? You could have anyone."

"But I don't want anyone." Alex leaned closer, his voice like velvet. "I want you, Elena Ross. Say yes."

Leo, who'd been quietly sipping his juice, suddenly piped up. "Mommy, does this mean Mr. King would be my daddy?"

Both adults froze.

Alex looked at the boy who might already be his son and felt his heart clench. "Would you like that, Leo?"

Leo nodded enthusiastically. "Yes! You're nice and tall and you have a cool car! And Mommy would be happy. She's always sad when she thinks I'm not looking."

Elena's eyes filled with tears. "Leo..."

"Please, Mommy?" Leo's eyes were so hopeful. "Can Mr. King be our family?"

Alex watched Elena's internal struggle play across her beautiful face. He saw the moment she broke, the moment desperation and hope won over caution.

"Okay," she whispered. "But we need a contract. Everything in writing. Rules. Boundaries."

"Of course." Alex felt triumph surge through him. "My lawyers will draft everything. You'll have complete financial security, your own boutique, and—"

"And separate bedrooms," Elena interrupted firmly. "This is business only."

Alex's smile was slow and dangerous. "If that's what you want, Elena. For now."

The way he said her name made her shiver. What had she just agreed to?
