After the man left, I carefully tried to get up, and I took the money he had left on the bedside table. When I looked at it, I saw that they were many 100 bills, and when I saw the amount he had paid me, I almost had a heart attack. It was 3 months' salary at the restaurant in just one night. "Hang on a little longer Maria, you're doing all this for Mom, hang on a little longer," I say to myself.
"Okay, after my work I'll be here," I say resignedly.
After saying goodbye to Karry, I leave the club and head to the clinic where Mom is hospitalized. I needed to be with her, I felt bad about what I had just done. I never thought I would go so low to get some money, but I knew that was the only fastest way to gather the money for her surgery. Mariano had been very clear when he told me that she was getting worse and that she needed the transplant as soon as possible, and that's why I had no choice but to accept this job.
When I arrive at the clinic, I go to her room, everything was silent, it was past 3 am and there was almost no movement at this time.
When I enter the room, I sit next to my mother who was asleep, I rest my head next to her and my tears begin to fall silently until I end up falling asleep.
I wake up again with the sound of my cell phone alarm. When I look at the time I see that it is 7 am, I get up and my mother was awake.
"Good morning mommy, how are you feeling today?" I ask, taking her hand.
"I'm fine darling, I feel better than yesterday, don't worry," she says, smiling.
"That's good mom, it makes me very happy to see you well and very soon you will be able to leave this place and live a normal life," I say with a smile of happiness.
"Mari, the surgery is very expensive daughter, you can't gather it so quickly, please, don't get into debt with anyone to get that money, I'll be better if I die daughter, don't complicate your life anymore for me," she says sadly, and I get up angrily from the chair.
I was tired of her always mentioning death, didn't she understand how important she was in my life and that she was the only thing I had left here, besides my aunt, but she was too far away.
I began to cry uncontrollably, I couldn't bear so much anguish that I felt, didn't she put herself in my place?
"Stop saying to let you die," I say angrily and crying. "If it were the other way around. If I were the one in that bed on the verge of death, would you let me die?" I ask with a lot of anguish.
She was silent and lowered her gaze, she knew that I was right, if I were the one in that bed, she would never let me die, and like me, she would do anything to save me.
"Please, don't mention death again Mom, because if you die, I'm going with you," I say crying.
"Don't cry anymore darling, I just feel sad that you're sacrificing so much for me, I want you to be happy and not stressed about everything that happens to me," she says sadly.
"I understand what you're telling me, but I want you to understand too, that you're the only thing I have mommy and I won't be happy without you by my side," I say, sitting down again and taking her hand again.
"I'm sorry daughter, I won't say that again, I just don't want you to exhaust yourself," she says with a faint smile.
"I'm fine Mom, you being alive gives me strength to continue, you are my world and my pillar, and it will always be like that," I say, getting up and giving her a hug. "Now I'm leaving, I have to go to work at 8, I'll come at noon when I get off," I say, giving her a kiss on the forehead.
"Take care my girl," she says smiling and I nod before leaving the room.
When I leave the room I meet Mariano who was arriving to check on my mother.
"Maria, are you leaving already?" he says, looking into my eyes.
"Yes, I was leaving, I start at the restaurant at 8, why? Did you need to talk to me?" I ask, looking at him.
"Relax, it's not something very important, we'll talk at noon when you come back, if not you'll be late," he says with a smile and my heart begins to beat hard, since when he said "relax" it reminded me of the man from last night, more than anything because of his tone of voice.
I liked Mariano, for a long time, but I was no longer worthy of him, after what I had done the night before, I felt dirty and used, I was no longer worthy of being with someone as good as him.
I lowered my gaze, remembering what happened last night and that I had stopped being pure and innocent, made me feel miserable, but I knew that I was doing everything for my mother, for her health and for her well-being.
"Okay, I get off at 12, I'll come straight here," I say seriously.
"Good, I'll wait for you in my office then," he says smiling and I nod before passing by his side and leaving the clinic.
I felt ashamed to look him in the eyes, and I had to take him out of my heart, I could no longer continue thinking of him as someone different, I already felt impure for everyone.
When I arrived at the restaurant, I put on the apron and started my working day.
Mid-morning during my break time, I take another painkiller, as I felt small discomfort in my intimate part, when suddenly Luli approaches me, takes me by the hand and takes me back to the alley next to the restaurant.
"Tell me, tell me, how did it go last night?" she says excitedly, inquiring about what I had done last night.
"What do you want me to tell you? Nothing out of this world happened, I just had sex with a stranger," I say ashamed.
"Oh my god Maria, but did you like it? Did you enjoy it? How much did he pay you?" she asks me too excited.
"I don't know, half and half, since the nerves didn't go away and with respect to the payment, I had never seen so many bills together, in one night I earned what I would earn here working 3 months," I say surprised.
"Wow Maria, at this rate your mommy will be able to have surgery much sooner than you imagined," she says happily.
"Yes, I know, that's why I agreed to do it, all for her friend," I say smiling.
We talked a little more with Luli and then we went back to work, since we still had two more hours of work left.
At noon, I say goodbye to Luli and go back to the clinic.
When I arrive I go to Mariano's office, I knock on the door and a few seconds later he opens the door.
"Maria, welcome, come in," he says smiling and letting me in.
"Thank you Mariano," I say, entering the office and sitting in the chair in front of the desk.
He closes the door again and sits in his chair in front of me.
"Well Maria, what I wanted to tell you is that the date for your mom's surgery has already been scheduled, it will be in a week, I already talked to my entire medical team who are the ones who will assist me in the surgery, everything is already arranged. This is the total cost of the surgery," he says, handing me a sheet with all the details of the surgery and the cost of it.
My heart almost jumped out when I saw the cost, how much more should I do this that I was doing to reach that price?
"I know that it is very little time for you to gather the money, but your mom's health is getting worse every day, we have a heart and before they give it to another person we must occupy it, because then it will be more complicated to get another one," he says with concern.
"I understand." I only manage to say, since a knot had formed in my throat from the anguish I felt.
"Maria, listen to me, I know what you're thinking and what worries you, I can put the money for your mom's operation, then you pay it back to me, I'm not in a hurry with that," he says and my tears begin to fall, why hadn't he told me that before? And I wouldn't have made the mistake I made last night, now it's too late, what's done is done.
"Don't worry, you do enough by taking care of my mother so that she is still alive, I will take care of the money and before the surgery I will have it," I say, getting up from the chair to leave.
"Wait Maria, what's wrong? Since this morning I notice you cold and distant with me, did I say or do something that bothered you?" he asks confused and I start crying again, since I felt dirty after what I did last night.
"I'm sorry Mariano, I didn't have a good night, I just need to rest for a while before going back to work in the afternoon, that's all, exhaustion," I lie, since I couldn't tell him why.
After apologizing to Mariano, I leave his office and go to my mother's room, when I arrive she was having lunch, we talked a little and then I lay down for a while on the small sofa in the room.
