Chapter 5 — The Blood Lake (Part 1)

Aria opened her eyes to darkness.

Cold. Endless, suffocating cold. Her lungs burned as she tried to breathe. The water — it wasn’t water like any lake she’d ever known. It was thick, red, almost like liquid glass that shimmered and pulsed with a heartbeat all its own.

She clawed upward, panic rising. Lightning-like streaks of white illuminated the blood-red surface, revealing shapes beneath — shadows moving with terrible intent. Faces, hands, mouths, some screaming silently, others frozen in pain.

Aria shuddered. The air smelled of iron, decay, and… something else. Fear. Desire. Hunger.

A movement nearby made her scream.

Nikolai was there. Half-submerged, black hair plastered to his face, gray eyes glowing faintly in the crimson light. His shirt clung to him as if fused with his skin. He reached for her, but the lake itself seemed alive, trying to push him away.

“Aria!” His voice was sharp, commanding. “Stay close!”

“Where are we?!” she yelled, splashing toward him.

“The lake,” he said, voice low, almost a growl. “It’s the heart of the curse — the place that feeds everything this house became.”

Before she could answer, the surface of the lake rippled violently. Shadows erupted, twisting into monstrous forms — some humanoid, some more twisted, limbs bent in impossible angles. They surged toward them like predators sensing blood.

Nikolai grabbed her wrist, yanking her closer. “Don’t fight the water! Let it carry you!”

She froze. “Carry me? You want me to float in… in this nightmare?”

He gave her a look — dangerous, possessive, terrifying. “I want you alive, solnyshko. Trust me.”

The lake roared. Waves of crimson water slammed into them, knocking Aria against Nikolai. He caught her in one strong arm, spinning to face the incoming shadow-forms. His other hand was already drawing a dagger from a sheath strapped to his thigh — black metal that gleamed in the strange light.

“They’re not ghosts,” he said, voice grim. “They’re memories… of those the curse claimed. Their rage keeps the lake alive.”

“Then why aren’t we dead?” she demanded.

“Because I promised you wouldn’t be,” he growled, stabbing the nearest shadow. The blade passed through it like smoke, and it screamed, shattering into black mist.

Aria’s heart thudded. His movements were a blur — lethal, precise, almost supernatural. Every slash, every kick, every strike was perfect. She wanted to run, but she was rooted to him, drawn by something she couldn’t name.

A shadow lunged from behind her. She barely dodged, and it sank into the lake with a hiss. Nikolai spun, slashing it apart midair.

“You can’t let them touch you,” he said, voice low, pressing close. “The curse will take you if it does. My mother… my brother’s fiancée… I can’t lose you too.”

Her chest heaved. “I don’t need saving!”

“No,” he whispered fiercely, eyes locking onto hers. “But I won’t let you fight it alone.”

The shadows were relentless. They moved faster, multiplying. Tentacles of black mist rose, lashing at them. The lake’s surface bubbled as if boiling, crimson waves taller than she could imagine crashing toward them.

Aria realized the impossible — the lake was alive. It watched them. It knew their fear. Every heartbeat sent ripples across the water, drawing more shadows closer.

Nikolai grabbed her hand. “Hold on!”

They surged forward, cutting through the water. The dagger in his other hand glowed faintly, light feeding the shadows back into the lake with every strike. The red liquid hissed and steamed wherever the blade touched it.

“Why—why is it here?” Aria gasped, clutching his arm.

“Because it hates us,” he said shortly. “Because the curse wants to consume what it cannot have. And because…” He leaned close, voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. “It knows I love you.”

Her stomach clenched. Her lips parted. “You—what?”

He didn’t explain. Not yet. His hand slid down hers, intertwining with hers in the freezing water. A small, almost tender touch — but every inch of him radiated danger. Possessiveness. Desire.

The lake shrieked in response, waves thrashing, shadows lunging.

Aria realized, with growing horror and a thrill she hated to admit, that the moment was only theirs. Even amid the supernatural terror, even as monsters of memory rose to tear them apart, Nikolai’s focus never wavered from her.

He plunged the dagger into a mass of shadows, ripping a path for them. “We can’t fight forever,” he said, voice harsh. “We have to reach the center — the curse’s heart. Only there can we end this.”

The lake seemed endless. But in the distance, she saw it — a faint glow. Pulsing, red and black, like the heart of some ancient beast. The shadows surged to protect it.

Nikolai’s eyes narrowed. “Stay close.”

They moved together, slicing through wave after wave of screaming memories. Every time she stumbled, he caught her, arms strong and possessive, holding her flush against him. Her fear and adrenaline mingled with something darker — a pull she couldn’t resist.

The lake roared, the shadows screamed, and lightning of some internal magic flashed beneath the surface.

Aria’s voice trembled. “Nikolai… I…”

He froze mid-step. The water licked their knees, then higher. “What?”

“I… I don’t want to die. Not here. Not with this.” Her words hit her before she could stop them. “With you.”

He caught her face, pressing his forehead to hers. “You won’t,” he said softly. “Not while I’m alive. Not while I can fight.”

The lake surged, and a huge shadow exploded out — taller than both of them, limbs like broken branches, eyes bleeding black. Its roar vibrated through the water, shaking Aria to her core.

“Run!” Nikolai shouted, pulling her behind him.

They sprinted through the water, dagger slicing, shadows exploding into mist. The air smelled of iron and old blood, the red water churning around their legs like a living thing.

Aria realized — the curse hated their love. The more they clung to each other, the stronger it lashed out.

Then, suddenly, the water beneath them opened into a deep, black vortex. Pulling. Swirling. The heart of the lake.

Nikolai tightened his grip. “Hold me!”

They were sucked downward.

Aria’s scream echoed as the shadows tried to drag her apart from him. The lake clawed, twisted, whispered, tried to separate them. But Nikolai’s hands were iron. Possessive. Loving. Obsessive.

“Never,” he growled, his voice splitting the water. “Not you. Not ever.”

And in that moment, Aria realized — even in the heart of this nightmare, even in the curse’s embrace, she would never let him go.

The water engulfed them, the shadows screaming, the lake pulsing like a living thing — and the world went black.
