Chapter 1 – The Wedding That Never Was
The sound of violins floated through the marble hall like silk in the air — soft, perfect, and hollow. Beneath the glittering chandelier, rows of guests turned toward the golden aisle where the ceremony of the century was about to begin.
Tessa Morgan stood behind the heavy oak doors, her reflection trembling in the mirror across from her. The gown was breathtaking — layers of ivory satin that shimmered under the light, a veil that framed her face like mist. To everyone else, she was the picture of happiness. To herself, she was a ghost waiting to disappear.
“Five minutes, Miss Morgan,” the wedding planner whispered, her voice a mixture of excitement and awe. “The press is already here. The world’s waiting.”
Tessa smiled faintly. The world’s waiting… but so is my freedom.
Her heart thudded in her chest as she glanced at the small envelope hidden beneath her bouquet. Her fingers traced the edge of the note she had written the night before — ten words that would shatter everything:
I’m sorry, Leo. But I can’t live in your world.
A world of flashing cameras, ruthless business rivals, and luxury that felt more like a cage. Leonardo Vance — the man everyone called untouchable — had given her everything but the one thing she needed most: a choice.
Outside, the doors creaked open. The music swelled. A thousand eyes turned toward the empty aisle.
“Tessa?” her maid of honor called softly, peeking through the doorway. But Tessa was gone.
Outside, Tessa’s heels clattered against marble as she ran down a service corridor, the train of her gown gathered in her hands. The early-morning air hit her like freedom when she burst through the side exit. She kicked off her shoes, the stone steps cold beneath her feet, and slipped into the waiting city—into anonymity.
Her veil lay draped across the mirror, her bouquet abandoned beside the note. Through a side exit, she ran barefoot across the marble floor, the cool air biting her skin as she stepped into the waiting dawn.
Somewhere behind her, the orchestra faltered. Whispers spread like wildfire. Cameras flashed.
And inside the grand hall, Leonardo Vance stood alone at the altar, his jaw tight, his heart pounding beneath his tailored suit.
He didn’t look at the guests. He didn’t speak. He simply reached for the note a trembling usher handed him — unfolded it slowly — and read her words in silence.
The world saw a man betrayed.
But those close enough saw something else in his eyes — not shock, not anger, but a quiet, dangerous promise.
But those who truly knew Leonardo saw something darker flicker behind his calm gray eyes—a quiet vow sharper than any diamond ring.
If she thinks she can run… she doesn’t know me at all.
Why do you think she left?
