chapter 5 Classroom Rivalry

The classroom buzzed with the usual chaos of teenage life: the hum of fans overhead, the rustle of notebooks, and the occasional whispers from excited classmates. But for Aarvi Sharma, the world had narrowed to a single person sitting across the room Arjun Malhotra.

He leaned against the edge of his desk, tall, unbending, and impossibly intimidating. Even when the teacher wasn’t looking, his posture commanded attention. There was an invisible aura around him, a quiet magnetism that drew eyes but kept everyone at a safe distance. Everyone except Aarvi.

Her heart pounded in her chest. Today was the day they were assigned the annual project, a pair assignment that would force them to spend time together. She had dreaded this moment and longed for it in equal measure. She adjusted her bag nervously and muttered under her breath,

“Please let this not be a disaster…”

The teacher’s voice rang sharp and commanding:

“Class, for the annual project, you’ll be working in pairs. I’ve assigned partners to ensure balance. Aarvi Sharma… Arjun Malhotra.”

A hush fell over the classroom. Whispers spread like wildfire.

“The iceberg and the girl who actually talks to him?”

“This is going to be… interesting.”

Aarvi felt her cheeks heat up, but she forced herself to stay calm. She knew Maya was watching from the back, suppressing a grin, clearly enjoying her friend’s impending struggle.

Arjun didn’t move, didn’t blink, didn’t flinch. His dark eyes flicked briefly toward her, assessing, calculating, unreadable as always.

After class, Aarvi approached him cautiously, her palms slightly sweaty.

“So… um, should we meet after school to discuss the project?” she asked softly.

Arjun’s gaze finally settled on her. Cold. Unyielding.

“I work alone. Always,” he said, flatly.

Aarvi’s chest tightened, but she refused to show defeat. “But it’s a pair project. Our grades depend on cooperation. Don’t you care about failing?”

“Grades don’t matter to me,” he replied tersely, gathering his books.

Her heartbeat quickened, frustration bubbling to the surface. “Fine. Then at least don’t drag me down. I’ll do my part, but if you fail, it’s on you.”

Arjun paused, studying her with those piercing dark eyes. There was something in her defiance, in her refusal to be intimidated, that made him stop in his tracks. He was used to people running from him, or worse cowering. But not Aarvi. She stood there, trembling slightly but unbroken, and it irritated him… and confused him.

“Don’t assume I’ll fail, Sharma,” he said finally, his voice low and edged with danger. “If anything, you’ll be the one trying to keep up.”

Her lips parted slightly, surprised by the unusual admission. He took a step closer, and the air between them seemed to thicken, charged with an energy neither could explain. Her heart skipped. His proximity made her pulse race.

Aarvi swallowed hard, standing her ground despite the sudden intimacy of the moment. “Excuse me?” she whispered.

“See you after school. Library. Don’t be late,” he said, and turned sharply, leaving her standing there, cheeks flushed, heart hammering.

The rest of the day was a blur for Aarvi. She tried to focus on her lessons, but her mind kept drifting to that brief, almost intimate moment. The way his voice had dropped, the way his eyes had lingered on her a fraction longer than usual, the subtle shift of his body toward hers… it all made her acutely aware of the electricity between them.

After school, the library was quiet except for the soft rustle of pages and the occasional cough. Aarvi found him sitting at a table near the window, sunlight streaming over his dark hair. Her steps were slow, hesitant. She almost wanted to turn around and leave, but something deep inside her refused.

“Here,” she said softly, placing her notes beside him. Their fingers brushed, and a spark of warmth ran up her arm. She quickly pulled back, cheeks burning.

Arjun glanced at her without comment but didn’t move his hand. That brief contact lingered in the air, heavy and unspoken. Aarvi’s heart raced.

“Let’s get this over with,” he muttered, flipping through her notes.

Hours passed as they worked in tense silence. Every so often, their hands would brush over the same page, or their shoulders would nearly touch as they leaned over the table. Each accidental contact made Aarvi’s pulse spike, each fleeting glance sent shivers down her spine.

Finally, he looked up at her. His expression was unreadable, but his voice softened slightly, almost imperceptibly.

“You’re… thorough,” he said, and immediately regretted the casual compliment.

Aarvi’s lips curved into a small, triumphant smile. “Thanks. You’re not so bad yourself,” she teased lightly, trying to mask the flutter in her chest.

For a moment, silence fell between them. It was a comfortable silence, not awkward, but filled with an intensity that neither dared to acknowledge. Aarvi felt like every beat of her heart was audible in the quiet library. Arjun, for his part, was aware of it too, and though he didn’t admit it, he felt… unsettled.

As they packed their things, Aarvi accidentally bumped into his shoulder. She apologized quickly, but he didn’t respond. Yet when she walked past him, he noticed the faint scent of her perfume, the soft sway of her hair, the way her hand trembled ever so slightly as she held her books.

That night, lying in her bed, Aarvi hugged her pillow and whispered into the darkness,

Why is he so impossible… yet so irresistible?

And somewhere across town, Arjun stared at the ceiling of his room, restless and unusually aware of the lingering warmth from her accidental touch. He couldn’t explain it, couldn’t name it, but one thought kept repeating in his mind:

She’s… different. And I can’t ignore her.

That was the beginning. The first sparks of rivalry, attraction, and tension that would grow into something far deeper, far more consuming. And neither of them realized just how much the next few weeks would change everything.
